You can show a Meta Quest view on an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible television, but Quest does not normally AirPlay directly. The practical route is two steps: cast the headset to the Meta companion app on an iPhone or iPad, then mirror that device to the TV. Instructions below reflect the documented workflow as of August 16, 2026; menu labels can change with software updates.

What you need

  • A supported Meta Quest headset, powered on and paired with your Meta account.
  • An iPhone or iPad with the Meta companion app installed and signed in to the same Meta account.
  • An Apple TV or smart TV that supports AirPlay.
  • A working Wi-Fi network. For the simplest discovery, connect the Quest, iPhone or iPad, and television to the same local network—not a guest network that isolates devices.

Apple’s AirPlay instructions describe mirroring from an iPhone or iPad to Apple TV, an AirPlay-compatible television, or a Mac. They do not list Quest as an AirPlay source. Quest casting and AirPlay are separate systems, so an Apple TV generally will not appear as a direct Quest target simply because it accepts AirPlay.

Cast Quest to an iPhone or iPad

First confirm that the Meta app is paired with the headset and that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Labels may vary by headset software and app version.

Start in the Meta app

  1. Open the Meta companion app on your iPhone or iPad and sign in to the account used on the headset.
  2. Turn on the Quest and keep it nearby.
  3. Open the app’s device or headset panel and choose Cast.
  4. Select the connected Quest headset if prompted, then choose the phone or tablet as the destination. It may be labeled This Phone or similar.
  5. Start casting. Put on the headset and accept a confirmation prompt if one appears.

Start inside the headset

  1. Put on the headset and open the universal menu.
  2. Choose Camera or Cast, then choose Cast.
  3. Select the connected phone or Meta app as the destination and confirm.

Older Meta support guidance describes the headset route as universal menu → Camera → Cast → target device; the current menu can differ. Meta’s casting guidance also points users toward the mobile app and account/network checks.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

Before continuing, make sure the iPhone or iPad actually shows the live cast. It is a flat spectator view intended for other viewers, not the stereoscopic image seen through the headset lenses.

Mirror the phone or tablet to the TV

  1. Turn on the Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV.
  2. Check that the receiver and iPhone or iPad are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open Control Center. On newer iPhones and iPads, swipe down from the upper-right corner; on older iPhones, swipe up from the bottom edge.
  4. Tap Screen Mirroring and select the Apple TV or television.
  5. If the TV displays an AirPlay passcode, enter it on the phone or tablet.
  6. Return to the Meta app and leave the live cast view open.

Apple documents this Control Center → Screen Mirroring flow and the same-network requirement at its AirPlay support page.

Stop the stream

  1. Open Control Center on the iPhone or iPad, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.
  2. Stop the Quest cast in the Meta app, or use the headset’s Camera/Cast menu if needed.

Use a computer instead of an iPhone or iPad

If you do not have an Apple mobile device, Quest can be cast to a computer browser, then shown on a TV. Meta support describes browser casting through a computer; the available page and labels may change.

  1. On a supported computer, open Chrome or Microsoft Edge and sign in to Meta’s casting website.
  2. Put on the Quest, open the universal menu, and choose Camera → Cast → Computer, or the equivalent current labels.
  3. Open the cast window on the computer. Connect the computer to the television by HDMI for a straightforward wired display, or use AirPlay from a compatible Mac to Apple TV.

HDMI avoids adding another wireless mirroring hop and is usually the more predictable option. Mac-to-Apple-TV AirPlay is convenient but can add delay or instability. Meta’s support discussion of the computer route is at this casting guidance page.

Choose the route that fits your setup

Goal Route Main trade-off
Show Quest on Apple TV or an AirPlay TV Quest → iPhone/iPad Meta app → AirPlay Uses Apple devices you may already own, but adds two wireless links and delay.
Show Quest on a television with minimal wireless steps Quest → computer browser → HDMI Requires a computer and cable.
Use Google TV or Chromecast equipment Try direct Quest casting where compatible Meta says TV/Chromecast compatibility is not guaranteed across devices; see Meta support’s compatibility guidance.
Present from a Mac Quest → browser cast → Mac display or AirPlay More setup and possible browser or wireless-session issues.

Google’s Google Cast guidance also requires the casting device and receiver to share a Wi-Fi network. AirPlay, Google Cast, Miracast, and TV-brand screen-sharing features are not interchangeable.

What to expect on screen

  • The phone-to-TV setup uses a Quest-to-phone cast followed by phone-to-TV mirroring. Noticeable delay is normal; it is not a zero-lag gameplay display.
  • The TV image may be softer than the view inside the headset, and fast games can show compression, stutter, or dropped frames.
  • Audio behavior can vary: sound may remain in the headset, play through the phone, or come from the TV. Check the actual setup before presenting.
  • Notifications and incoming calls may appear on the television. Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus mode before streaming to an audience.
  • Some video apps do not support AirPlay, as Apple notes in its AirPlay guidance; protected content may not mirror like a normal Quest cast.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The Quest does not appear in the Meta app

  • Check that the headset is on and awake, the app is signed in to the correct Meta account, and pairing has completed.
  • Keep Bluetooth enabled during initial device connection, and ensure the app has Local Network access in iOS or iPadOS settings.
  • Update the app and headset software, confirm both are on the same Wi-Fi network, then force-close and reopen the app.
  • If discovery still fails, restart the phone and headset; restart the router if necessary. Meta’s support guidance recommends checking account and network conditions and restarting devices.

The phone shows Quest, but the TV is missing

  • Confirm the TV supports AirPlay and AirPlay receiving is enabled; make sure the Apple TV is awake.
  • Put the phone and receiver on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network. A VPN, security software, guest VLAN, or isolated mesh node can block local discovery even when devices use the same router.
  • Restart the phone and Apple TV or television. Apple’s AirPlay troubleshooting page covers receiver settings and basic recovery steps.

AirPlay connects but the TV is black

  1. Stop Screen Mirroring and stop the Quest cast.
  2. Restart the cast to the phone and verify the live image appears there.
  3. Start Screen Mirroring again. If the image remains black, restart both devices and test again.

A backgrounded Meta app, a locked phone, a stopped Quest cast, network congestion, or a temporary AirPlay session error can interrupt the image.

The stream disconnects, stutters, or has poor quality

  • Move closer to the router or use a stronger 5-GHz signal where available.
  • Stop high-bandwidth downloads, cloud gaming, or video streaming while testing.
  • Make sure the phone has not switched away from Wi-Fi, and check that the router is not isolating clients.
  • Test Quest-to-phone first; add AirPlay only after that leg is stable. Avoid running multiple casting sessions at once.

Can Quest cast directly to Apple TV?

Usually not as a native Quest-to-AirPlay connection. Treat Apple TV as the AirPlay receiver for the iPhone or iPad intermediary. Meta’s support discussion says direct TV casting centers on Chromecast compatibility and is not guaranteed across televisions and Chromecast devices; see Meta’s Apple TV casting response. Buying an Apple TV solely to create a direct Quest-to-TV cast will not add AirPlay to the headset.
