On PS5 and PS5 Pro, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → RGB Range and select Full. Use Full only when the TV or monitor is also set to accept full-range RGB. If you have not diagnosed a mismatch, leave the console on Automatic, Sony’s recommended default for normal use.
Change RGB Range on PS5
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Scroll to RGB Range and select Full.
- Set the display’s HDMI range or black-level option to the corresponding Full setting, if it has one.
- Check a dark scene or a black-level test pattern for both deep blacks and visible shadow detail. If the picture looks wrong, switch the PS5 back to Automatic and check the display setting.
The Video Output screen also contains controls for resolution, HDR, VRR, Deep Colour Output and Video Transfer Rate. Sony’s PS5 video output guide places RGB Range in this menu and advises changing it only when the connected HDMI device does not correctly communicate its range capability. Menu labels can vary with system software or regional interface.
What Automatic, Full and Limited mean
| PS5 setting | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | The console attempts to choose a range based on information from the connected HDMI device. | Recommended starting point for normal use, especially if you have not identified a range mismatch. |
| Full | Sends full-range RGB video. | Use when the display is configured to accept full-range RGB. |
| Limited | Sends the narrower range commonly used in television and video workflows. | Use when the display is configured for Limited, or when matching settings resolves a range mismatch. |
Full is not a universal picture-quality upgrade and does not inherently add colors, resolution or HDR capability. The goal is to make the source and display interpret the signal range consistently. Sony’s RGB range guidance describes Automatic as the normal choice and explains that mismatched Full and Limited settings can make blacks appear pale or dull.
Match the TV or monitor’s HDMI setting
Look in the picture or video settings for the specific HDMI input used by the PS5. Depending on the display, the control may be called HDMI Video Range, HDMI Dynamic Range, RGB Range, Input Range, or Black Level. Names such as “High,” “Normal” or “Low” are manufacturer-specific; do not assume their meaning without checking the display’s manual.

Sony TVs, for example, may offer an HDMI video range control with Auto, Full or Limited options on some models. Availability and menu names vary by model, region, firmware and input type; see Sony’s HDMI video range guide. Other brands may use different terminology or hide the control entirely.
Read the picture: washed-out blacks versus crushed shadows
A useful test is a black-level pattern that includes near-black steps. Alternatively, pause a game scene with subtle detail in dark areas. Compare settings without changing brightness, contrast, gamma or other picture controls at the same time.

- Blacks look gray, pale or hazy: The display may be interpreting a Full signal as Limited, or the HDMI chain may be converting the range. Match the display to Full if it supports that setting; otherwise return the PS5 to Automatic or try a matching Limited setup.
- Dark areas become uniformly black and shadow detail disappears: The display may expect Limited while the PS5 is sending Full. Try Automatic, or set both devices to Limited.
- Bright areas lose detail: Dynamic-range handling or other display processing may be clipping highlights. Sony describes this kind of problem as white or black saturation when HDMI range is handled incorrectly; see its HDMI dynamic range support article.
- You see little or no difference: The active output may not be RGB, or the display or an HDMI intermediary may be converting the signal.
Do not compensate for a range mismatch by changing several picture controls. First restore a known range pairing; then assess any separate brightness or HDR calibration issue.
Troubleshoot a wrong-looking picture or missing option
If Full makes the image washed out or too dark
- Return to Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → RGB Range and select Automatic.
- Check the display’s setting for the PS5’s HDMI input and match it to the console. If you cannot identify the display’s range mode, keep the PS5 on Automatic.
- If the picture remains wrong, reset only that HDMI input’s picture settings rather than changing every input or the whole display.
If RGB Range is missing or has no effect
- Confirm you are in the PS5’s Video Output menu, not the TV’s settings.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor temporarily. A receiver, soundbar, capture card or splitter can affect HDMI negotiation or convert the signal.
- RGB Range applies to RGB signals, not every output format. Sony notes that some 4K HDR output at 50 or 60 Hz may use YUV422 or YUV420 depending on configuration, so changing RGB Range may not affect those modes.
If you are also troubleshooting 4K/120, VRR, flickering or loss of signal, focus on the HDMI path and bandwidth settings rather than treating RGB Range as the fix. Sony recommends checking the TV firmware, compatible HDMI port, direct connection and suitable cable; its guide also explains that reducing Video Transfer Rate can limit some high-bandwidth output modes.

- Real 8K HDMI certified cable: The HDMI cables pass HDMI 2.1 Certified. The HDMI Cable delivers 10K 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz higher resolution, 4 times higher than 4K@60Hz. The advanced technology makes a remarkable improvement in image clarity and sharpness
- 48Gbps ultra high speed: The HDMI 2.1 Cable with 48Gbps bandwidth delivers uncompressed 8K(7680 x 4320) video and high-speed transmission without signal loss. Make it faster 2.6X than HDMI 2.0(18Gbps). The 4K@240Hz HDMI cord also supports variable refresh rates and QFT to decrease “display latency”. Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
RGB Range is not an HDR or performance setting
RGB Range does not raise resolution, frame rate, HDR brightness, VRR capability, HDMI bandwidth or the display panel’s contrast. It controls how the luminance range of an RGB signal is interpreted. HDR appearance also depends on the TV’s HDR mode and tone mapping, the game’s brightness settings and the active output format. Because some PS5 4K HDR modes use YUV rather than RGB, Full will not change every mode in the same way.

- Not sure what your display expects? Leave the PS5 on Automatic.
- Display confirmed as full-range RGB? Use Full on the PS5 and the matching display input.
- Display confirmed as Limited? Use Limited or Automatic on the PS5 and match the display to Limited.
- Picture becomes difficult to see? Restore Automatic in the PS5 Video Output menu. If needed, reset the display’s HDMI input picture settings and connect the console directly while troubleshooting.
Changing RGB Range is a reversible picture-signal setting; a mismatch can make the image look incorrect, but it does not physically damage the PS5 or display.
