Yes. You can pair a DUALSHOCK 4 wirelessly with a compatible iPad from Settings > Bluetooth. Turn the controller off, unplug its USB cable, then hold PS + Share until the light bar flashes. Select the controller on the iPad. Sony lists iPadOS 13 or later as the DUALSHOCK 4 support baseline; the game must also support controllers.
What you need
- A charged DUALSHOCK 4 controller.
- An iPad running iPadOS 13 or later, Sony’s listed baseline for connecting this controller.
- Bluetooth enabled on the iPad, unless you are testing a wired connection.
- A game or app that supports external controllers.
For Bluetooth setup, the controller should be off, disconnected from USB, and not actively connected to the PS4 or another device. Its Bluetooth name is commonly DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller, but the displayed name can vary. Sony’s compatibility guidance is at PlayStation Support.
Connect the controller to the iPad with Bluetooth
- Turn off the controller. If its light bar is on, hold the PS button until it powers down.
- Disconnect the USB cable. The controller must be unplugged to enter Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Start pairing mode. Hold the PS and Share buttons together until the light bar flashes. Share is the small button to the left of the touchpad.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On the iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on if needed.
- Select the controller. Tap the DUALSHOCK 4 or corresponding controller name under nearby devices.
- Check the connection. It should appear as connected in My Devices. If it is paired but not responding, press and release the PS button once.
Apple’s pairing instructions are in its controller connection guide. A flashing light bar indicates pairing mode; no light means the controller is off or has powered down. Avoid relying on a particular light-bar color as confirmation, since it can vary with the controller’s state or the app.
Connect it with a USB cable
A wired connection is an alternative for testing the controller or avoiding Bluetooth. Apple says a DUALSHOCK 4 can pair automatically when plugged directly into an Apple device with a cable that supports data and charging. A charge-only cable is not sufficient.

- Works with dualshock 4 controllers
- 6.5ft cable
- Made with quality ferrite coil
- Usb to Micro-USB USB
- Gold plated connectors
- USB-C iPad: Use a compatible USB-C cable or data-capable adapter for the controller’s connector.
- Lightning iPad: Use an appropriate Lightning-to-USB connection or adapter.
- Either type: Unlock the iPad before connecting the controller. If it is not recognized, disconnect and reconnect it, then try another data-capable cable or adapter.
Apple’s wired-accessory guidance explains that an iPad may need to be unlocked before it communicates with an accessory. Not every cable, hub, or adapter will work.
Use the controller in iPad games
Pairing connects the controller to iPadOS; it does not make every game controller-compatible. Open a game that explicitly supports controllers, and check its settings if input does not work. Depending on the game, controller prompts may replace touch prompts.
Test the sticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, directional controls, and menu buttons in the game. Some apps support only certain controller functions or require configuration. Apple describes connecting compatible controllers and customizing buttons for supported games in its iPad controller guide.

Play PS4 games on iPad with Remote Play
Pairing alone does not stream games from a PS4. To play your PS4 games on the iPad, use the PS Remote Play app and configure the PS4 for Remote Play. The console must be set up for the feature and use the PlayStation account associated with the app. The game runs on the PS4; the iPad displays the stream and sends controller input.

Network quality affects video, latency, and responsiveness, so a given Wi-Fi connection cannot guarantee a console-like response. Sony confirms DUALSHOCK 4 use with compatible games and apps, including games streamed through PS Remote Play, in its controller compatibility guidance.
Troubleshoot connection problems
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Turn the controller off completely and unplug its USB cable.
- Hold PS + Share until the light bar flashes, then move the controller close to the iPad.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in Settings > Bluetooth, then close and reopen that screen.
- Make sure the controller is not already connected to the PS4, a phone, a computer, or another tablet.
- Charge the controller and restart the iPad if it still does not appear.
- If it remains missing, reset the controller using the steps below.
Sony’s pairing procedure requires the controller to be off and disconnected from USB before pairing.

It says connected, but the game does nothing
- Press and release the PS button once.
- Check that the game supports external controllers and look for a controller option in its settings.
- Force-close and reopen the game; an app already open during pairing may need to be restarted.
- Test the controller in another known controller-compatible app to distinguish a game issue from a connection issue.
- If necessary, remove the controller from Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Check for available iPadOS, game, and controller firmware updates.
The controller keeps reconnecting to the PS4
Temporarily turn off or disconnect the PS4, then repeat Bluetooth pairing with the iPad. A DUALSHOCK 4 pairs with one console at a time, and an active console connection can interfere with pairing elsewhere.
A previously paired controller will not reconnect
- On the iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Under My Devices, tap the information button beside the controller.
- Choose Forget This Device if available.
- Put the controller into pairing mode with PS + Share, then select it from nearby devices.
Apple’s instructions for removing a controller are in its Bluetooth controller guidance.
The controller will not enter pairing mode
- Charge it, make sure the light bar is off, and disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold PS and Share together; Share is the small button to the left of the touchpad.
- If the controller still will not pair, use the recessed reset button on its back near L2. Sony recommends holding it with a small tool for several seconds, then connecting the controller to the PS4 with USB and pressing PS to pair it with the console again. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting instructions.
The wired connection fails
- Verify that the cable carries data as well as charging, and that the adapter matches the iPad’s port.
- Unlock the iPad, disconnect and reconnect the cable, and try a different data-capable cable.
- Temporarily remove a hub or dock from the connection.
- Check that the controller is charged and updated, and that the cable is not damaged.
Reconnect the controller to a PS4
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS4 with a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- After it pairs with the console, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly.
This is Sony’s recommended way to pair the controller back to the console after using it with another device.

Which DUALSHOCK 4 features work on iPad?
Controller pairing, game support, and support for individual controller features are separate things. Basic buttons, sticks, triggers, and directional controls are the most dependable, but each game determines which inputs it accepts. Sony warns that DUALSHOCK 4 features can be limited on non-Sony devices over Bluetooth:
- Touchpad functionality may not be supported.
- Rumble and motion sensing may not work.
- The light-bar color cannot be changed.
- Audio through the controller’s headphone jack is not supported.
Individual apps may map or ignore controls differently, so do not assume that all controller features will work in every game.
