No. The headline is outdated: Microsoft changed its policy on April 21, 2026. Future Call of Duty games will not launch day one on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass; Microsoft says they will arrive in the following holiday season, about a year after launch. The earlier day-one releases of Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 still happened, and Microsoft said games already in the Game Pass library would remain available.
For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, scheduled for October 23, 2026, that means launch-day Game Pass access is not expected under the announced policy. Microsoft has not announced a specific Game Pass date for the game.

How the day-one Call of Duty policy changed
Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 were day-one releases
Microsoft announced in May 2024 that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 would be available on Game Pass at launch. The announcement marked a significant use of the series as a subscription draw after Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. Microsoft’s Black Ops 6 announcement
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 followed on November 14, 2025, launching day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Microsoft’s Black Ops 7 announcement

Microsoft’s April 2026 change applies to future games
On April 21, 2026, Microsoft said future Call of Duty games would not be added to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on launch day. Its stated plan is to add new releases during the following holiday season, about a year after launch. The same announcement said existing Call of Duty games already in the library would remain available. That is not a promise of permanent availability: as with other subscription catalogs, availability can change through later service updates.
The policy change was announced alongside lower U.S. monthly prices: Game Pass Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99, and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. Microsoft noted that prices vary by region. Its announcement did not say the price change was caused by Call of Duty. Microsoft’s April 2026 Game Pass update

What the policy means for Modern Warfare 4
Microsoft has scheduled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for October 23, 2026. The official announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 as platforms, but does not announce the game as a day-one Game Pass release. Under Microsoft’s current policy, it is not expected to be available through Game Pass at launch. Microsoft’s Modern Warfare 4 announcement
Applying the “about a year later” rule suggests a possible late-2027 window for Game Pass, but that is an inference, not a confirmed date. Microsoft has not given a specific Game Pass arrival date for Modern Warfare 4, and the policy could change.

What Game Pass access does—and does not—include
Full-game access is different from premium editions
“Day one on Game Pass” means the base game can be played through an eligible subscription at launch. It does not automatically include premium-edition extras such as campaign early access, Battle Passes, BlackCell, Call of Duty Points, cosmetic preorder rewards, or optional paid expansions. Activision lists edition and preorder distinctions separately for Black Ops 7. Activision’s Black Ops 7 editions and preorder benefits
Console online multiplayer is a separate consideration
Microsoft says Game Pass Ultimate includes online console multiplayer. For Modern Warfare 4, its announcement says online multiplayer on console requires a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately. That requirement concerns online play; it does not mean Essential includes the full game. PC Game Pass is a separate plan and does not provide console access. Should you subscribe or buy Modern Warfare 4?
| Reader situation | Practical direction |
|---|---|
| You want to play Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026 | Plan on buying it for your platform; the current policy does not include it at launch. |
| You want existing Call of Duty games and a broader game catalog | Consider Game Pass, while checking the current catalog and the plan’s platform benefits. |
| You play only on PC | Compare PC Game Pass with a direct PC purchase; PC Game Pass does not restore day-one access for future Call of Duty games. |
| You own the game but need online console multiplayer | Check the required console plan; Microsoft lists Game Pass Essential as required for Modern Warfare 4 online multiplayer on console. |
| You can wait roughly a year | Wait for a specific Game Pass announcement rather than treating the approximate holiday-season window as a confirmed date. |
Whether a subscription costs less than buying the game depends on how long you subscribe, your region, the edition you want, and whether you value the rest of the catalog. A direct purchase is the straightforward route to launch access and continued play without an active subscription; Game Pass makes more sense when its other games and benefits matter to you too.
