The official PlayStation 4 DUALSHOCK 4 uses USB Micro-B, commonly called Micro USB—not Mini USB. For a standard PS4, look for a USB-A-to-Micro-B cable. If you need to pair the controller or use it for wired communication, make sure the cable supports data as well as charging.
Micro USB and Mini USB are different connectors
The Micro-B socket is on the top edge of the DUALSHOCK 4, between the shoulder buttons. Its plug is small, flat and asymmetrical, and normally fits in only one orientation. A Mini USB plug is larger and has a different shape; it will not fit the controller. Don’t force a plug that doesn’t seat easily.

Sony lists the DUALSHOCK 4 port as “USB (Micro B)” in its PS4 technical specifications. The console end of the usual cable is USB-A: PS4 USB-A port → USB-A-to-Micro-B cable → controller.
Which cable to choose
For a standard PS4, choose a USB-A-to-Micro-B cable. A cable from another device can work; it does not generally have to be an official Sony cable. Check that the Micro-B plug fits snugly and that the cable is in good condition. Sony advises using a cable that complies with the USB standard.

- Charging only: A cable that supplies power may be enough.
- Pairing or wired communication: Choose a cable explicitly described as supporting data or sync. A charge-only cable can light or charge the controller without letting the PS4 communicate with it.
- Using a computer with USB-C ports: A USB-C-to-Micro-B data cable can connect an unmodified DUALSHOCK 4, if the computer supports the connection. The controller end still needs Micro-B.
When shopping, useful descriptions include “USB-A to Micro-B data cable” and “Micro USB charging and sync cable.” Avoid “Mini USB,” “charge-only” when you need pairing, or vague listings that do not show the connector. Pick a length that suits your setup; a longer cable reaches farther but is easier to snag. A loose plug or damaged cable can cause intermittent charging or data problems.
DUALSHOCK 4 revisions use the same connector
The two principal official DUALSHOCK 4 families, CUH-ZCT1 and CUH-ZCT2, use Micro-B. Sony identified USB Micro-B for the original CUH-ZCT1 family in its 2014 controller announcement; Sony’s specifications identify the revised CUH-ZCT2 series and the same port. You do not need a different connector because a controller is from one of these revisions.

There is a functional distinction when using a cable for input: Sony said the CUH-ZCT2 supports USB communication as well as Bluetooth in its 2016 announcement. Wired communication also depends on the connected system and its settings. Do not assume identical wired-use behavior across every revision or device.
Pair or reconnect the controller
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the controller directly to the console with a USB-A-to-Micro-B cable that supports data.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the light bar to respond and the controller to connect.
Sony gives these connection steps in its DUALSHOCK 4 wireless troubleshooting guide. The controller can also charge while the PS4 is on or in Rest Mode. Charging from a computer or another USB device is possible, though Sony notes that some devices may not charge it effectively; see the controller charging and safety manual.

If the controller charges but will not connect
Power reaching the controller does not prove that the cable can carry data. Try these checks in order:
- Try a known-good USB-A-to-Micro-B data cable, connected directly to the PS4 rather than through a hub.
- Turn on the console and press the PS button. If that fails, try another USB port on the console.
- Inspect the controller socket for lint, a loose fit, bent contacts or visible damage. Do not force or probe the port.
- Reset the controller using the small reset button on its rear, then retry the pairing steps above. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting page includes reset guidance.
- If possible, test with another controller or cable to help isolate whether the issue is the cable, controller or console port.
If a known-good data cable still will not connect, the fault may be in the controller socket, battery, controller hardware or console USB port—not a mismatch between Micro and Mini USB. A cable can fit physically and still have failed data wires.

USB-C, docks and other exceptions
An unmodified official DUALSHOCK 4 does not have a factory USB-C port. Some aftermarket modifications replace its original Micro-B hardware, but those are separate from the standard controller and may involve opening or altering it. Third-party PS4-compatible controllers can also use different connectors or a permanently attached cable, so check the specific controller rather than assuming it matches Sony’s design.
Charging docks vary: some connect through the controller’s bottom EXT port using an adapter, while others use Micro USB. Check the dock’s fit and compatibility with your controller before buying; a dock is not necessary if all you need is a replacement cable. The PS4 console’s front-facing ports are USB ports, commonly USB-A—the Micro-B port belongs to the controller.
