Its Microsoft Store-only rule shut out Steam and most conventional game launchers, while the integrated graphics in many Windows 10 S laptops limited demanding games. This is a look back at the 2017 experience: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so the platform is now legacy hardware rather than a sensible new gaming purchase.
What Windows 10 S meant for games
Launched in 2017 as a Windows edition, Windows 10 S restricted app installation to the Microsoft Store. Microsoft later described the restricted configuration as “S mode.” The rule mattered to gamers because most PC games were distributed through desktop launchers or standalone installers, not the Store. Microsoft’s S mode FAQ explains the Store-only restriction and the option to switch out of it.
A Store listing did not guarantee good performance. The processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, and display resolution still determined what a particular PC could run. The practical question was whether the games you wanted were in the Store and whether the device could handle them.
Which games could you play?
Casual and lighter games
These were the natural fit for modest processors and integrated graphics. In his 2017 hands-on coverage, Paul Thurrott reported that Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition and Oxenfree ran well on the tested devices. Contemporary examples also included Fallout Shelter and Candy Crush titles. Those observations describe particular games and 2017 hardware, not a guarantee for every Windows 10 S PC.

More demanding Store games
The Microsoft Store also carried substantial games, including titles from Forza, Halo, and Gears of War, as well as ReCore, Astroneer, Thimbleweed Park, and Batman: The Telltale Series. These are historical examples from a catalog that varied by time, region, device architecture, and licensing; they are not a current availability list. Contemporary coverage noted that Store listings showed game requirements, but meeting a minimum requirement did not promise smooth play. See Alphr’s 2017 Windows 10 S review and Thurrott’s 2017 games coverage.
What performance looked like on 2017 Surface hardware
The original testing was observational, not a standardized benchmark suite. Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition and Oxenfree were reported to run well; Batman: The Telltale Series had occasional stutters and selected low graphical settings automatically. The article did not establish frame rates, thermals, battery life, or performance in long sessions, so the results should not be generalized beyond those tested games and configurations.
Hardware was a major part of the limitation. The tested Core i5 configurations used Intel HD 620 graphics, while a Core i7 Surface Pro configuration used Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640. These are historical specifications, not current performance guidance. Integrated graphics constrained demanding 3D games, and rendering at the native resolution of a high-resolution Surface display could make the workload heavier. A capable CPU alone did not make a thin productivity laptop a gaming machine.

- Quad-core AMD Ryzen 5 r5-3550h processor

Windows 10 S did not inherently make an integrated GPU slower. Rather, many devices sold with it were not designed for gaming, and the operating system’s installation restriction compounded that hardware limitation. The original coverage also noted that an NVIDIA-equipped Surface Book could offer more graphics capability, but NVIDIA GeForce Experience was not available in Windows 10 S.

The bigger limitation: no normal PC game ecosystem
Windows 10 S blocked installation of software not delivered through the Microsoft Store. That ruled out the usual workflows for Steam, GOG’s conventional installers, Epic Games Launcher, Battle.net, standalone publisher launchers, and many older Win32 games distributed outside the Store. It also restricted desktop utilities used for mods, overlays, remapping, and peripheral configuration. A Store version of a game could differ from another edition in mod support, saves, DLC, multiplayer, or update timing.
That did not mean every non-Store game was technically impossible to run forever, or that every Store game was unavailable. It meant the supported path for installing outside software was to switch out of S mode. Doing so addressed the software restriction, not the PC’s graphics performance or other hardware limits.

Controllers and accessories
Thurrott reported that the Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox One worked with the tested Windows 10 S hardware over USB and Bluetooth, with drivers installed automatically, including for Store games. That is evidence about basic controller input, not every accessory feature. A device may accept input while its remapping, firmware, RGB, macro, audio, or overlay software remains unavailable because that software needs a desktop installer or driver. Microsoft says switching out is free and one-way through the supported process: the device cannot then be returned to S mode using that route. On Windows 10, the documented path is:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Activation.
- Find Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro, as applicable.
- Select Go to the Store.
- On the Microsoft Store page, select Get.
Follow Microsoft’s switching instructions; the exact wording may vary with the device and Windows version. Switching out is distinct from upgrading the Windows edition while remaining in S mode. For Snapdragon devices, Microsoft notes an additional compatibility limit: after switching out, 32-bit x86 Windows apps may be installed, but x64 apps still will not run. See the S mode FAQ.

What Windows 10 S gaming means in 2026
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says ordinary Windows 10 systems no longer receive free security updates, technical assistance, or feature updates; see its end-of-support notice. Existing games may continue to run, but Store listings, online services, launchers, anti-cheat systems, and graphics drivers can change independently. The end of support also makes these devices unsuitable as a general new purchase in 2026.
An eligible device may have a Windows 11 upgrade path, but edition and S mode matter. Microsoft states that Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education in S mode must switch out of S mode to upgrade to Windows 11; Windows 11 S mode is limited to Home edition. Check the device’s eligibility and Microsoft’s current guidance before planning an upgrade.
Quick Recap
Who Windows 10 S gaming suited
- Casual Store gamer: A reasonable fit for lighter games on hardware that meets their requirements, especially if the device is already owned.
- Mainstream PC gamer: A poor fit if you depend on Steam or other desktop launchers, mods, advanced peripheral software, or demanding 3D games.
- Existing owner who needs desktop games: Switching out of S mode removes the Store-only installation rule, provided the device’s hardware can run the games.
- New buyer in 2026: Choose supported hardware based on the games you intend to play rather than buying an old Windows 10 S machine.
