The mine’s side passages and Reinald’s Philter are optional; your final dialogue choices determine the deacon’s fate and whether you receive his payment. The Forgotten Wolven diagrams are available whichever ending you choose.
Where to start the quest
The quest was added in update 4.0 and is available in versions with that update or later. Find the Eternal Fire deacon outside Devil’s Pit in Velen and speak with him to begin. The walkthrough sources suggest level 15. Clear the deserters inside the pit before entering the mine. VULKK’s quest guide identifies it as a next-gen update addition; the level recommendation comes from Witcher Wiki.
How to get through Devil’s Pit
Explore before following the voice
Inside the mine, use Witcher Senses to locate clues and inspect rooms. At an early fork, the voice directs Geralt along the right-hand route. The other passage takes longer but is optional and can reveal Reinald’s Philter recipe and more of the mine’s history. You do not need the philter to finish the quest. Follow Reinald’s letters and other evidence if you want the context for the events here and the later conversation.
Use the Magic Lamp if you have it
The Magic Lamp can reveal ghostly scenes in locations described by the walkthrough, but using it depends on having obtained Keira’s Magic Lamp earlier. It is not a quest requirement. Read the Forgotten Priest’s Testament and related evidence before leaving the mine if you want the extra context available for the ending dialogue. How to beat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal
The mine leads to a fight with possessed Reinald, followed by the Red Miasmal. During the Miasmal encounter, it summons Plague Victims as its health falls. Watch for its claw swipes and fire attack, evade their telegraphed strikes, and deal with summoned enemies when they engage rather than ignoring them. Choose an ending: save the deacon or let Reinald decide
After defeating the Red Miasmal, speak with Reinald. The Forgotten Wolven armor and weapon diagrams are awarded during this conversation regardless of the ending. The consequential choice is whether to bring the deacon to Reinald and, if you do, how you respond to their dispute.

The final dialogue can depend on what you learned in the mine, including the history of the priest who stayed behind. If you want the option to defend the deacon using that context, investigate the side passages and read the notes before advancing. Gamer Guides describes the dialogue outcomes and consequences.

Quest rewards
- The Forgotten Wolven armor and weapon diagrams are available in every ending. The Witcher Wiki says the set is wearable at level 20.
- The deacon’s payment is preserved if you refuse to bring him to Reinald or persuade Reinald to spare him; it is lost if Reinald kills him.
- The Philter, Magic Lamp, diagrams and gear are in-game items. No physical item or quest-specific consumable is required.
