Valve has stopped producing the last LCD Steam Deck, the 256GB model, but that does not mean every remaining unit has disappeared from stores. The change was reported in December 2025; into 2026, the official comparison page still showed an LCD listing, while stock and prices varied. For new buyers, the OLED is now Valve’s continuing Steam Deck option; for current LCD owners, production ending does not make the handheld stop working.
What Valve discontinued
The affected model is the 256GB Steam Deck LCD, the last LCD configuration still in Valve’s lineup. This is not the end of the Steam Deck family: the OLED models remain. The original Steam Deck launched with LCD hardware, and Valve had already phased out the 64GB and 512GB LCD configurations after introducing OLED. The 256GB LCD remained as the budget choice until reports in December 2025 said Valve had stopped making it. GamingOnLinux’s December 2025 report describes it as the final LCD model.
When and how the change was announced
Coverage placed the phase-out in December 2025. Rather than a prominent standalone press release, reports said the notice appeared on the Steam Deck store page: Valve was no longer producing the 256GB LCD, and remaining stock would be sold until it ran out. PC Gamer’s coverage describes the quiet store-page notice. The date a buyer saw it, and when stock ran out, could differ by region; the available reporting does not establish one global sellout date.
Is the LCD Steam Deck still available?
Production status, product listings and orderable stock are different things. Reporting says production ended, but the official comparison page retrieved in August 2026 still displayed a 256GB LCD entry. A listing is not proof that a unit is in stock or can be shipped to your country. Check the live Steam store for your region and confirm availability at checkout before deciding. Valve’s comparison page shows the product lineup, while Steam Deck HQ’s report describes the production change and planned sell-through.

What replaces it, and what changes with OLED?
The OLED is the effective current new-product replacement, not a wholly new performance generation. Valve’s comparison page lists 512GB and 1TB OLED configurations alongside the 256GB LCD listing. The OLED offers a larger HDR display, higher maximum refresh rate, a larger battery and newer wireless connectivity; those upgrades do not mean every game will run dramatically faster. Valve’s OLED overview also says the OLED model is about 30 grams lighter than the LCD model.
| Feature | 256GB LCD | 512GB OLED | 1TB OLED |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch, 1280×800 LCD | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED |
| Maximum refresh rate | Up to 60Hz | Up to 90Hz | Up to 90Hz |
| APU process | 7nm | 6nm | 6nm |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 5 | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 6E |
| Battery capacity | 40Wh | 50Wh | 50Wh |
| Official estimated play time | 2–8 hours | 3–12 hours | 3–12 hours |
| Storage | 256GB | 512GB | 1TB |
The battery-life ranges are Valve’s estimates and depend on the content being played; they are not guaranteed runtimes. The official specifications are on Valve’s comparison page. The 1TB OLED adds anti-glare etched glass and other bundle features; consult Valve’s live listing for the current configuration details.

What happened to the $399 entry price?
The discontinuation removes Valve’s least expensive new Steam Deck tier. At the time of the phase-out, reporting gave U.S. prices of $399 for the 256GB LCD, $549 for the 512GB OLED and $649 for the 1TB OLED. Those are historical prices, not a current price quote. Tom’s Guide reported those figures around the change.
Valve’s official comparison page retrieved in August 2026 displayed $789 for the 512GB OLED and $949 for the 1TB OLED, while its page still listed the LCD. These displayed figures differ sharply from earlier reported prices, and regional pricing, stock and checkout totals may change. A later Steam announcement also reported a $789 price for the 512GB OLED amid higher memory and storage costs. Check the live store in your country rather than using a historical figure as today’s price.

Should you buy a remaining or used LCD?
Remaining new stock
A new LCD can still make sense if it is substantially cheaper than an OLED and comes with clear warranty and return protection. It suits buyers who prioritize the lowest entry cost and do not need the OLED’s HDR screen, higher refresh rate or larger battery. If the price gap is small, the newer OLED is generally the safer value: you get the improved display and battery specification, as well as current-production hardware.
Consider the seller and the specific unit, not just the label. Remaining inventory may be old, and warranty terms depend on where and from whom you buy. Reports in July 2026 raised concern about the availability of some LCD replacement parts, including batteries; this signals a possible repair constraint, not proof that all LCD repairs are unavailable. PC Gamer’s report discusses that developing issue.

Used or refurbished LCD
A second-hand LCD can be a sensible budget buy when its condition, price and seller protections justify the trade-off. “Refurbished” usually describes a returned or repaired unit, not newly manufactured stock. Before paying, check:
- Confirm the exact model and storage capacity; distinguish the 256GB LCD from older LCD configurations.
- Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels and backlight issues, and test touchscreen response.
- Test both sticks, triggers, bumpers, trackpads and gyro controls.
- Check USB-C charging, port stability, battery behavior and whether the unit holds a charge.
- Verify that the device is not account-locked, and confirm the charger and case included in the sale.
- Read the return policy and warranty terms; compare the full price with any refurbished OLED alternative.
There is no universal discount that makes used LCD hardware a good deal: the acceptable price depends on condition, battery health, warranty and the local OLED price. If a used LCD costs nearly as much as a new OLED, the OLED’s newer hardware and stronger support runway make it the less risky choice.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What existing LCD owners should do
Ending production is not the same as ending software support, warranty coverage or repairs. An LCD Deck does not become unusable because Valve no longer manufactures new ones. Owners can continue playing compatible games and using accessories; however, the evidence here does not establish an indefinite SteamOS support promise or a universal repair-parts guarantee. For warranty questions, repair options or current part stock, check Valve’s support channels and the parts seller before committing to a repair.
If the Deck still meets your needs, discontinuation alone is not a reason to upgrade. An OLED is a worthwhile refinement for someone who values its screen, battery and wireless improvements, but it is not a necessary replacement for a satisfactory LCD. Owners considering more storage can use a microSD card or investigate an internal SSD replacement; an SSD upgrade requires opening the device and carries damage risk, so compare its full cost and effort with buying another Deck first. The iFixit Steam Deck parts page is one place to check component availability, which can change over time.
What the discontinuation does—and does not—signal
The change marks the end of new LCD Steam Deck production, not the end of the product line, an immediate shutdown of existing units, or evidence by itself that a Steam Deck 2 is imminent. Buyers choosing a Deck today should compare live regional prices and stock: a deeply discounted LCD may still be the budget pick, while OLED is the current new-hardware choice. Existing owners can keep using their devices, while paying attention to battery and repair-part availability as their hardware ages.
