Verdict: Xiaomi Mi VR can still be an inexpensive way to try basic mobile VR, but it is not a good general-purpose VR purchase in 2026. The name covers three different headsets: the phone-powered Mi VR Play, a more advanced phone headset made for a few older Xiaomi phones, and the standalone Mi VR 一体机. Their compatibility and capabilities differ sharply, so identify the exact model before judging a listing.
Which Xiaomi Mi VR model are you reviewing?
Marketplace listings often use “Mi VR,” “Mi VR Play,” “Mi VR Glasses,” “Mi VR 1” and “Mi VR Standalone” inconsistently. Match the product name and hardware to the model below; features from one should not be assumed to apply to another.
| Model | Phone required? | Controller | Tracking | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mi VR Play | Yes | No dedicated motion controller | Phone-based rotational viewing | Basic 360-degree video and simple phone VR | Phone fit, comfort and aging software |
| Xiaomi Mi VR smartphone headset | Yes; officially listed for five older Xiaomi models | Bluetooth controller | Separate headset motion sensor; controller input | Owners of compatible Mi 5-era phones | Very narrow phone compatibility |
| Mi VR Standalone / Mi VR 一体机 | No | 3DoF controller | 3DoF head tracking | Retro VR experimentation and local media | Obsolete hardware and uncertain software access |
None of the three should be mistaken for a current 6DoF headset. Xiaomi’s pages remain useful for identifying hardware, but they do not establish an active global sales or support channel.
Mi VR Play review: a phone viewer, not a tracked headset
Build and viewing experience
Mi VR Play is a smartphone viewer with a fabric-and-EVA body, a two-way zipper to hold the phone, aspheric anti-reflective lenses, ventilation and alignment openings, and a physical button that touches the phone screen. Xiaomi specifies phones around 4.7 to 5.7 inches; diagonal size alone does not guarantee a fit. Check the phone’s width, height, camera bump, buttons and port placement against Xiaomi’s product and dimension information (Xiaomi Mi VR Play product page; Mi VR Play specifications).

The phone supplies the display, processing and most motion sensing, so image quality depends on that phone and the app. Expect the limitations of a basic split-screen viewer: no positional tracking, no room-scale movement, and no dedicated motion-controller interaction. Historical coverage praised its price and construction relative to very basic viewers, while noting modest field of view and comfort limitations (Wareable’s Mi VR Play review).
Fit and comfort
A phone can fall within the listed screen-size range and still be too wide or tall, or have buttons pressed by the enclosure. A thick case, inconvenient headphone-jack position or camera bump may also interfere. Remove the case for a fit check; do not force the zipper shut. Light leakage, facial pressure and heat from the phone can make longer sessions less comfortable. Glasses fit is not guaranteed by the available product specifications, so try the exact combination before committing to a purchase.
Who it suits
Mi VR Play can make sense if it costs very little, you already have a phone that fits, and you want occasional 360-degree video or a simple VR demonstration. It is a poor choice if you expect modern games, precise interaction or dependable access to a large content library. Xiaomi says the Mi VR content library is available in China only (Xiaomi global product page).
Xiaomi Mi VR smartphone headset: better hardware, difficult compatibility
Specifications and experience
This more capable phone headset adds its own Bosch 6-axis motion sensor and a Bluetooth controller. Xiaomi lists USB-C connectivity, 38 mm optical-grade PMMA lenses, anti-glare treatment and an adjustment mechanism for optical distance. The headset weighs 408 g without a phone. Xiaomi claims sensor sampling up to 800 Hz and latency of 16 ms; those are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements or guarantees of what a user will experience. Xiaomi notes that such figures can vary by software version, test environment and product version (Xiaomi Mi VR specifications; Xiaomi Mi VR product page).

Controller
The included 9-axis Bluetooth controller has a touchpad and three physical buttons. It uses two AAA batteries; Xiaomi rates it for more than 60 hours of low-power use. The controller provides input, not modern positional hand tracking, and support depends on the app. Do not assume that a controller from another Xiaomi VR model will pair or work the same way.
Phone compatibility is the deciding factor
Xiaomi’s official compatibility list names only the Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi Note 2 and Mi 6 (Xiaomi Mi VR product page). A USB-C port or a newer Xiaomi phone is not evidence of compatibility. The relevant MIUI/VR software may also be difficult to obtain or use today, particularly outside China. Consider this model only if you already own a listed phone and can verify that the headset, controller and intended software work together.
Mi VR Standalone review: self-contained, but limited to 3DoF
Hardware and tracking
The 2018-era Mi VR Standalone, also called Mi VR 一体机, needs neither a phone nor a PC. Xiaomi lists a customized Snapdragon 821 platform, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB or 64 GB storage, a 2,560 × 1,440 Fast-Switch LCD, and 60 Hz or 72 Hz refresh rates. It weighs 425 g without the strap and has a 2,600 mAh battery with Micro-USB charging (Xiaomi Mi VR Standalone specifications).
Its 3DoF tracking senses head rotation, so you can look around but leaning, crouching or walking through a virtual space is not tracked as it is on a 6DoF headset. Xiaomi lists a fixed 63.5 mm interpupillary distance; whether that suits an individual user cannot be assumed. The headset’s age also means the stated display and refresh-rate specifications should not be read as evidence of a modern VR experience.

Controller and content
The 3DoF controller has a touchpad, Home and Back buttons, and a trigger. It supports basic pointing and selection, not room-scale hand movement. Xiaomi advertised a Mi VR app store, an in-headset browser, DLNA and Samba support, and local video playback through SKYBOX-related functionality (Xiaomi Mi VR 一体机 product page). Xiaomi’s developer documentation describes shared core hardware with Oculus Go and support for Xiaomi’s Mi VR SDK and Oculus Mobile SDK (Xiaomi MiVR Developer Center).
That historical SDK relationship does not establish that current Meta/Oculus account flows, app downloads or services work in 2026. Xiaomi’s developer program was focused on the Chinese market. Treat software and content access as something to verify for the specific unit and region, not as a feature guaranteed by the original platform relationship.
Compatibility and setup checks before you buy
For Mi VR Play
- Compare the phone’s exact dimensions, not just its screen diagonal, with Xiaomi’s listed size range.
- Check that the camera bump, physical buttons and headphone arrangement do not obstruct loading or use; remove a thick case.
- Test your intended VR player or video app before buying, and confirm the phone stays centered in split-screen viewing.
- Expect phone heat and battery drain during use. Xiaomi’s product page gives fitting information, not a guarantee that every phone in range works well (Xiaomi Mi VR Play product page).
For the smartphone Mi VR headset
- Confirm the phone is one of Xiaomi’s five officially listed models, and verify its software can still run the required VR experience.
- Confirm the original controller is present, then check its battery compartment and Bluetooth pairing.
- Do not buy on the basis of USB-C or “Android compatible” claims alone.
For Mi VR Standalone
- Ask the seller to demonstrate a cold boot, charging, Wi-Fi connection, controller pairing, display operation and at least one app or locally stored video.
- Inspect for scratched lenses, display burn-in, overheating and a degraded battery; a 2,600 mAh original capacity says nothing about the health of an old unit.
- Ask whether a factory reset has been performed and whether setup still reaches the required account or software screens.
What software and content can you rely on in 2026?
Hardware can outlast the services and apps it was designed to use. Xiaomi’s global Mi VR Play page explicitly limits its Mi VR content library to China, and its standalone developer materials were likewise China-focused (Mi VR Play product page; MiVR Developer Center). The available documentation does not establish that the Mi VR app, account sign-in, store downloads, payments or Oculus-related services remain fully operational in every region today.
Before buying, check whether the app is available to you, whether it requires a China-region account or settings, and whether the unit can play local media without a cloud service. For a standalone headset, ask the seller to demonstrate the actual local playback or app you intend to use. Sideloading may be possible on some Android-based devices, but an APK from an unknown source is not a reliable or safe substitute for working official access. If your purchase depends on Xiaomi’s store or account services, do not assume that an old installation file will fix an unavailable service.

- 【Immersive 3D Movie Viewing】Gaming and watching movies in 3D works best when proper your eyes properly align with the screen. VR headset offers FD and OD adjustments (wide Field of Vision) to expand the viewing angle and perfectly match focal distance and unilateral myopic alignment for reduced distortion to ensure an optimal viewing experience.
- 【Better Control Experience】Our virtual reality headset provide a control that connected to the phone, then you can play and stop music, volume +/- directly. Put yourself right into the action with games, movies and more!
- 【Wide Compatibility】3D mobile VR headsets set compatible with 5.0-7.0 inch smartphones.
Common problems and practical recovery
Phone fits, but the picture is off-center
Recenter the phone and use Mi VR Play’s adjustment openings. Check that the app is in the correct split-screen mode and uses a compatible headset profile; if needed, test another VR player. Lens spacing and the user’s eye position can also affect perceived alignment.
Controller will not pair
Replace the batteries, remove old Bluetooth pairings and restart the phone or headset. Confirm the exact controller model and that the app supports it. Missing region-specific software may prevent a controller from being useful even when Bluetooth pairing succeeds.
Motion sickness or discomfort
Misalignment, low frame rate, latency, phone performance and individual sensitivity can all contribute. Try a short seated session with high-frame-rate content and correct phone or lens alignment; stop if symptoms persist. Xiaomi’s sensor sampling and latency claims are not a guarantee against nausea.
The Mi VR app or content is unavailable
Check whether the device can perform the use you actually want—especially local playback—without the missing app or account service. If the intended use requires a store that you cannot access in your region, treat that as a reason not to buy rather than counting on an unverified APK.

There is no reliable current US retail price or active global sales channel established for these models, so any used-market price is specific to the seller, country, condition and date. Compare the asking price with the risk of an incomplete or unusable device, not just its original launch positioning. The initial Mi VR Play beta was reported at RMB 1 for selected testers in 2016, and later coverage reported international pricing around $16–$20; those are historical figures, not current offers (TechCrunch’s 2016 launch report; Wareable review).
Quick Recap
- Mi VR Play: Consider it only as a very cheap viewer for a phone you have already confirmed will fit, for occasional 360-degree video or a novelty demonstration.
- Xiaomi Mi VR smartphone headset: Consider it only if you own one of the five officially listed phones and can verify the controller and required software before purchase.
- Mi VR Standalone: Consider it as a retro device or local-media experiment if it is inexpensive, demonstrably functional and has a usable battery.
- Look elsewhere: If you want currently supported games, dependable software access, modern tracking, room-scale use, warranty coverage or replacement parts, these old mobile-VR products are a poor fit. A current standalone headset is the more appropriate category to investigate; no current alternative price is stated here.
