No: ASUS said the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 5090 was not recalled. In December 2025, after retailers paused or delayed shipments and recall rumors spread, the company said it had adjusted the launch schedule to allow more time to improve the product. ASUS also said cards already sold could remain with their owners; its statement did not announce a mandatory return or identify a known defect.
What ASUS said about the recall rumor
ASUS public-relations representative Christian Wefers told ComputerBase, as quoted by HotHardware: “There is no product recall for the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 5090. We proactively adjusted the original schedule to gain additional time to improve the product and ensure an optimal customer experience. The products will arrive at our partners in the next few days. Availability may vary by region.” HotHardware’s report
ComputerBase reported on December 8, 2025, that ASUS Germany denied a recall and said customers who had already bought cards could keep them because there was no known problem. ASUS’s statement described a schedule adjustment and shipment delay, not a recall. Its “next few days” estimate was made at the time and should not be treated as a current delivery promise; availability varies by region. ComputerBase’s report
What changed in retail cards
In a January 12, 2026 update, ComputerBase described a comparison by Roman “der8auer” Hartung between an ASUS test sample and current retail hardware. The report said retail units had a changed liquid-metal application on the GPU and different sealant around electrical contacts. Those changes are attributed to ComputerBase’s account of Hartung’s comparison; the report does not establish that ASUS confirmed a defect, a safety issue, or a required owner action. What makes the Matrix an 800W RTX 5090
ASUS announced the ROG Matrix GeForce RTX 5090 30th Anniversary Edition on November 20, 2025. ASUS says the card can draw up to 800 watts when used with an Advanced BTF motherboard and a 12V-2×6 power supply, and advertises up to a 10% performance boost. The 800W figure describes a supported maximum configuration, not the card’s default draw in every PC. ASUS product announcement
Power comes through two connections
In the 800W mode, power is supplied through both the BTF Graphics Card High-Power Adapter (GC-HPWR) connection and a 12V-2×6 cable. A high-wattage PSU by itself does not enable the mode: the motherboard must support the BTF connector, and the card must also be wired to the 12V-2×6 connection as specified by ASUS. Cooling and construction
ASUS lists a quad-fan design, copper vapor chamber, liquid-metal thermal compound and a three-ounce copper PCB. Its product materials claim up to 20% more airflow or pressure in the relevant cooling descriptions and temperatures lowered by over 5%; these are ASUS’s product claims, not independent comparative test results. What owners should do
The cited ASUS statements do not call for customers to return cards, and ComputerBase reported that already sold units could remain with their owners. If you own one, follow ASUS support guidance for your region if you have a specific concern; do not infer a mandatory return, firmware fix or safety warning from the shipment delay alone.

What prospective buyers need for 800W mode
- Motherboard: an Advanced BTF motherboard with the card’s GC-HPWR connection supported.
- PSU and cabling: a compatible 12V-2×6 power supply and correct connection to the card, in addition to the motherboard connection.
- Compatibility check: verify the exact motherboard, PSU, cabling and installation requirements in ASUS’s documentation before building; a large PSU rating alone is not sufficient.
ASUS lists high-wattage models including the ROG Thor III 1600W and 1200W as companion PSUs, but naming a PSU family does not remove the motherboard and wiring requirements for 800W operation. ASUS product documentation
