Discord game detection, activity visibility, the in-game overlay, and screen sharing are separate features. First identify which one is failing: if the game is missing from Registered Games, troubleshoot detection; if it appears there but friends cannot see it, check activity privacy; if only the overlay or stream fails, use the separate fixes below.
Identify what is not working

| A console game does not appear | Check the console account connection and privacy settings, not PC process detection. |
Use the installed Discord desktop app for PC game detection and Registered Games controls. Activity features vary by client; the Game Overlay is supported on Windows, not macOS or Linux. Discord’s Game Overlay guide describes its platform limits.
Fix missing game detection on desktop
- Open the game fully and leave it running. A launcher alone may not be the process Discord needs to detect.
- In Discord, select the gear icon beside your username, then open Activity Settings → Registered Games. Some layouts or older documentation use labels such as Game Activity.
- If the game is listed, make sure its detection control or eye icon is enabled.
- If it is not listed, select Add it and choose the running game process. Prefer the actual game over Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Battle.net, Riot Client, or another launcher when both appear.
- Quit the game and fully exit Discord from the system tray or taskbar menu. Reopen Discord, launch the game, and check Registered Games again.
- If an old or duplicate entry remains after an update, remove the stale entry and add the process that is currently running.
Discord documents manual addition and notes that a game that cannot be detected or added may not be available through its game-specific streaming workflow. Manual addition can restore an entry, but it does not guarantee detection, overlay compatibility, or streaming. See Discord’s Go Live and Screen Share instructions.
Why the launcher may be the wrong choice
Launchers often remain open after starting a game, while the game itself runs as a separate process. Adding the launcher can make Discord show the wrong name or fail to track the game once it starts. If several similar processes appear, test the game process first. Anti-cheat or helper processes can also complicate detection; do not disable anti-cheat or install unofficial overlay or injection tools to work around it.

If Discord detects the game but nobody else sees it
Local detection does not automatically mean the activity is being shared. Discord’s current activity controls may be labeled Activity Sharing or, in some layouts, Activity Privacy.
- Open User Settings → Activity Sharing (or Activity Privacy) and turn on Share my activity or the equivalent activity-status setting.
- Return to Activity Settings → Registered Games and confirm detection is enabled for that game.
- If visibility is missing only in one server, open that server’s dropdown, choose Privacy Settings, and enable Activity Status.
- If the activity comes from a linked service such as Xbox or PlayStation rather than a PC game process, check that connection’s activity and privacy settings too.
Discord’s Activity Sharing FAQ describes global, game-level, and server-specific controls. A server setting governs visibility in that server; it does not necessarily control every other place a friend might see your activity.

Basic activity is not Rich Presence
Ordinary process detection can show a basic “Playing…” status. Rich Presence is a separate game or app integration that may provide details such as a mode, party information, or join options. Manually adding an executable does not create that integration, and not every title supports Rich Presence. Discord also offers connected-account activity separately from ordinary PC detection.
If the Discord overlay does not appear
The overlay is separate from game detection: a game can show as your activity while the overlay fails. Discord documents the overlay for Windows; it is not supported on macOS or Linux.

- On Windows, open User Settings → Overlay and enable the overlay.
- Check that the game is registered and that the overlay is enabled for that game, if an individual-game control is shown.
- Use windowed or borderless/windowed fullscreen mode rather than true exclusive fullscreen. Discord’s overlay known-issue page documents the fullscreen limitation.
- Restart the game after changing overlay settings.
- If the overlay causes crashes, lag, or other instability, disable it for that game instead of treating it as necessary for activity status.
Check elevated permissions carefully
If a game runs with administrator privileges while Discord does not, overlay or keybind features can fail to interact with it. First restart both applications. If Discord offers its Discord System Helper, follow the official System Helper instructions; Discord describes it as helping features register in elevated games and apps, especially keybinds. It is not a universal detection repair. Running Discord as administrator can be a limited diagnostic test for a permission mismatch, not a blanket setting to leave enabled.
If Go Live or screen sharing fails
- Join a voice channel where you have permission to stream.
- Start the game, select the screen-sharing or Go Live control, and check whether Discord offers the game or its application window.
- If the game is missing, add its running process through Registered Games → Add it, then try again.
- If application capture fails, switch the game to windowed or borderless mode and try capturing the whole screen instead.
Discord’s Windows capture guidance notes limitations for full-screen exclusive games and the documented application-capture path. See Windows application capture for Go Live and screen share. Screen capture can work when game-specific capture does not, but it does not repair ordinary detection. If Discord cannot detect or manually add a game, its documented game-streaming route may not support that title.

Console activity uses a different path
PlayStation
For PlayStation activity, link Discord and PlayStation Network, then check the console’s privacy visibility. Discord’s PlayStation connection FAQ gives these paths:
- PS4: Profile → Change Privacy Settings → Personal Info | Messaging → Online Status and Now Playing → Anyone.
- PS5: Settings → Users and Accounts → Privacy → View and Customize Your Privacy Settings → “Who can see your online status and what you’re currently playing” → Anyone.
Xbox
Xbox activity depends on linking your Xbox and Discord accounts and enabling the relevant display settings. Follow the account-specific steps in Discord’s Xbox connection FAQ; adding a PC executable will not fix console activity visibility.

When the problem persists
Record the operating system, whether you use Discord desktop or browser, the game and launcher, whether the process appears in Registered Games, and whether the failure is detection, visibility, overlay, or streaming. Note whether the game runs with elevated permissions and whether the issue began after an update. Discord’s labels and activity features can vary; its Recent Activity FAQ and Recently Played Games information also describe profile features that may not be available to every account. Use Discord’s official support channels for persistent problems, and avoid unofficial downloads claiming to inject or repair the overlay.
