For most PS5 owners, a Cat6 UTP Ethernet patch cable with RJ45 connectors and pure copper conductors is the best buy. Choose the shortest length that reaches your router or switch without pulling on the console. Cat5e also works: Sony lists the original PS5’s wired networking as 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T, so its maximum wired link is gigabit Ethernet. Cat6 is a sensible default for availability and extra headroom—not a way to make the console’s Ethernet port faster. Sony’s published PS5 specifications set that limit.
Quick recommendations
| Use case | What to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Cat6 UTP, pure copper, RJ45 patch cable | Matches the original PS5’s gigabit connection and leaves useful headroom for other network gear. |
| Best budget | Cat5e UTP, pure copper, RJ45 patch cable | A compliant, undamaged Cat5e cable is sufficient for gigabit Ethernet. |
| Long or demanding run | Cat6a, selected for the installation | Useful for a permanent or more demanding run; the PS5 itself still cannot use more than its gigabit interface. |
| Tight cable routing | Slim Cat6, protected from crushing and sharp bends | Easier to route, but physical protection matters. |
| Usually skip | Cat7 or Cat8 bought only for PS5 gaming | The larger category number does not raise the console’s Ethernet ceiling or promise lower ping. |
What Ethernet cable category does a PS5 need?
The original PS5 supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T, according to Sony’s specifications. The last standard is gigabit Ethernet. A sound Cat5e cable can support that link, so Cat6 is not a compatibility requirement. It is a practical default because it is widely sold and offers more headroom for compatible equipment elsewhere in a home network.
The cable’s category describes its capabilities under the relevant conditions; it does not override the limits of the console, router, switch, internet service or download server. A gigabit-capable cable connected to a 10/100 router port, for example, cannot make that port operate at gigabit speed.
Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a
- Cat5e: A good budget choice for an ordinary home connection when the cable is compliant and undamaged.
- Cat6: The best all-around choice for a PS5-only purchase. It supports the console’s gigabit connection and has additional capacity for some shorter, faster network runs.
- Cat6a: A more robust choice for demanding installations; it supports 10Gbps over up to 100 meters under appropriate standards-compliant conditions. The PS5 cannot use that additional bandwidth.
Cat7 and Cat8
For a PS5-only connection, do not pay a premium for Cat7 or Cat8 expecting faster matchmaking, lower latency or a quicker wired link. The console’s gigabit interface is the limiting factor. Cable Matters likewise describes Cat8 as excessive for typical PS5 use and does not recommend Cat7 as a default consumer choice: its PS5 cable comparison. A higher category may be relevant to other equipment or a specific installation, but the category label alone does not establish construction quality.

Will Ethernet improve PS5 speed, ping or stability?
Wired Ethernet can make a connection more consistent when Wi-Fi is weak, congested, distant from the router or affected by interference. It does not guarantee lower ping to every game server, and Cat6 does not make the PS5’s port faster than Cat5e would when both establish a gigabit link.
Download speed depends on the slowest relevant part of the path: the console’s port, router or switch port, internet plan, network traffic and download server. Latency also depends on the router, congestion, routing path and game server. A damaged cable or poor termination can cause errors or disconnections; replacing it with a sound cable can address that physical problem. A premium cable category is not a general performance cure.

What to look for when buying
Connectors and conductors
Choose a standard Ethernet patch cable with RJ45 plugs. The PS5 does not need a proprietary “PS5 cable.” Prefer a clearly specified pure bare copper conductor rather than a vague listing that advertises speed but omits the material. For example, Monoprice’s listed Cat5e and Cat6 cables specify pure bare copper conductors: Cat5e listing and Cat6 listing. These are product examples, not hands-on test winners; check the exact SKU and current listing details before buying.
Snagless boots or molded strain relief can help protect the plug and make a cable easier to handle. Gold-plated contacts are a finish and corrosion-resistance detail, not a meaningful speed upgrade. Prefer clear category labeling, a reputable seller and a return policy or warranty.

Length
Buy the shortest cable that reaches comfortably, leaving enough slack to avoid tension or a sharp bend where it enters the console. As a rough planning guide, 3–6 feet suits a console near the router or entertainment unit; 10–25 feet can allow flexible routing in the same room; 50–100 feet may suit a different room if secured safely along walls. These are convenience ranges, not guarantees of a cable’s performance.
Standards-based distance claims assume suitable cable and installation. Cat6a is specified for 10Gbps up to 100 meters; do not assume every inexpensive cable labeled with a category will perform to that distance. For a long permanent in-wall run, consider appropriately rated structured cable and installation that meets local requirements rather than simply extending a loose patch cable.

Flat, round, UTP and shielded
Flat cable can be easier to route along trim or through a tight space, but it is not inherently faster. Protect slim cable from crushing, especially beneath furniture or rugs. A conventional round patch cable is generally easier to manage and protect for a permanent or frequently handled route.
Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is normally the straightforward choice for a home PS5 setup. Shielding may help in an installation with substantial electrical interference, but it adds bulk and is most useful when the connectors and grounding are designed for a compatible shielded system. Shielding is not automatically an improvement for a short living-room cable.

Connect and set up a wired connection
- Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the PS5’s LAN port and the other into a router or Ethernet switch. Check the rear of your specific console: LAN-port placement varies across model groups, as shown in PlayStation’s connection guide.
- On the console, open Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then select Connect. These are the steps in PlayStation’s support instructions.
PlayStation states that PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not IPv6-only network connections. If a router is configured for IPv6 only, it may need IPv4 or dual-stack networking enabled.
If the wired connection is slow or unstable
A Cat6 label does not rule out a bad cable, port or installation. Before buying a more expensive category, work through the physical connection and network equipment:
- Unplug and firmly reseat both connectors. Check for visible damage and avoid forcing the cable sideways at the console.
- Try another router or switch port. Confirm that the selected port supports gigabit Ethernet; a 10/100 port limits the connection regardless of cable category.
- Test with another known-good cable. An intact Cat5e cable is a useful comparison against a damaged Cat6 cable.
- Remove sharp bends, crushing, loose couplers or strain on the cable. Poorly terminated in-wall wiring can also cause problems.
- Restart the PS5 and router if the link continues to drop, then compare whether the issue affects all network activity or only one game or download.
- If the connection is stable but downloads remain slow, investigate the internet plan, router, other network traffic and download-server conditions before spending on Cat8.
A PS5 network test can help compare connections, but it is not a certification test for the cable category. Results can vary with network traffic, routing and the test server.
PS5 Pro and cable compatibility
PlayStation’s support guide confirms a LAN port and wired setup for PS5 models, including PS5 Pro, and notes that port placement varies by model. The available model-specific information cited here does not establish a different Ethernet speed for PS5 Pro, so there is no basis to say it requires Cat8. A standard Ethernet patch cable is the relevant connection.
Ethernet carries network traffic; it does not affect the console’s HDMI resolution, HDR or refresh-rate output.
Quick Recap
Product examples by use case
- Cat6 patch cable: Monoprice’s FLEXboot Cat6 listing describes a stranded patch cable with snagless RJ45 connectors and pure bare copper conductors. Its technical sheet for a Cat6 variant lists 24AWG stranded construction, up to 550MHz, a 1Gbps data rate, TIA 568 C.2 certification and a lifetime warranty. Check that the sheet matches the exact SKU you select.
- Cat5e budget cable: Monoprice’s Cat5e listing specifies UTP, pure bare copper, 24AWG conductors and snagless RJ45 connectors. Confirm the chosen length and variant on the product page.
- Cat6a for a demanding run: Monoprice’s patch-cable category page describes Cat6a as supporting 10GBase-T and backward compatibility with Cat6 and Cat5e. Choose it for the needs of the wider installation, not because the PS5 uses more than gigabit.
