Yes. Both desktop cards can run Starfield, but neither guarantees 60 FPS at maximum settings. An RTX 3060 is best treated as a tuned-settings 1080p card; the faster RTX 3060 Ti has more room for High settings at 1080p and a 1440p compromise with upscaling. Actual performance depends on the CPU, game location, graphics settings, and whether the GPU is a desktop or laptop model.
Do the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti meet Starfield’s PC requirements?
Both cards exceed Bethesda’s listed minimum GPU, a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. That establishes a reasonable expectation that the game can run; it is not a promise of 60 FPS or high settings. Bethesda lists the more powerful RTX 2080 as its recommended NVIDIA GPU, so neither 3060 model is an officially recommended card.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or Radeon RX 5700 | GeForce RTX 2080 or Radeon RX 6800 XT |
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| System memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Storage | 125 GB available; SSD required | 125 GB available; SSD required |
| Other | DirectX 12 | Windows 10/11 with updates |
These are Bethesda’s published PC requirements; check the official requirements for the current listing. The SSD and 16 GB RAM requirements apply regardless of graphics card.
What performance can you expect?
The ranges below are planning estimates, not results from a new 2026 benchmark. They reflect the cards’ general performance position and the fact that demanding locations—particularly busy cities—can run slower than quieter areas. CPU, patch, driver, memory configuration, and laptop power limits all affect results.

Independent testing near the game’s 2023 launch found Starfield demanding across many GPUs. TechSpot’s 32-GPU test reported the RTX 3060 around 40 FPS in its tested configuration; GamersNexus also discussed CPU limits, particularly at 1080p with faster graphics cards. These tests help show relative performance, but they are not August 2026 measurements, and later game, driver, or upscaling updates may change exact results: TechSpot’s benchmark, GamersNexus’ comparison, and Hardware Unboxed’s 32-GPU test.
Why the 3060 Ti is faster—and why the 3060 can have more VRAM
The RTX 3060 Ti is generally the faster gaming GPU, which helps more when raising resolution or settings. Common desktop versions of the RTX 3060 have 12 GB of VRAM, though 8 GB versions exist; desktop 3060 Ti cards generally have 8 GB. More VRAM can help with texture-heavy workloads, but it does not by itself make a card faster. An 8 GB card can still play the game; if memory pressure becomes an issue, moderate texture settings and resolution.
Do not assume every card bearing these names performs alike. Laptop GPUs have varying power limits and cooling, and OEM systems may use unusual memory or reduced-power configurations. Check the exact model in Windows Task Manager, NVIDIA Control Panel, GPU-Z, or the manufacturer’s specifications.

Settings to try first
Use these as starting points, then adjust based on frame rate and image quality. If performance drops mainly in cities, the CPU may be limiting results; lowering GPU-heavy settings or resolution may then have little effect.
RTX 3060: start at 1080p
- Set the resolution to 1920×1080 and begin with the Medium preset. Raise selected options to High if performance allows.
- Enable DLSS Super Resolution or FSR. Start with Quality; if frame rate is still too low, try Balanced or a lower render scale. A roughly 70–80% internal resolution can be a starting point, not a universal ideal.
- If available in your installed version, try dynamic resolution to reduce drops.
- If performance is poor, lower crowd density, volumetric lighting, shadow quality, and contact shadows first.
- Motion blur and depth of field are mainly personal-preference choices. Disabling them can improve clarity, but usually will not transform performance.
- If 60 FPS is unstable, try a 40 or 45 FPS cap for a more consistent experience.
RTX 3060 Ti: choose between 1080p consistency and 1440p detail
- For a more consistent high frame rate, start at 1920×1080 with High settings.
- For 2560×1440, use a Medium/High mix and DLSS Quality or Balanced, depending on performance and image clarity.
- Lower crowd density and shadows if populated areas cause dips.
- Do not assume Ultra is worth the performance cost; High often offers a better balance.
How DLSS and FSR affect playability
DLSS Super Resolution and FSR upscale a lower internal render resolution to your display resolution. Both can help these cards, but the best mode depends on the game version, settings, and your preference for frame rate or image clarity. Bethesda lists DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, NVIDIA Reflex, and DLSS Frame Generation among its PC features; see its DLSS support information.
- DLSS Super Resolution: A useful starting option on either RTX card. It can improve frame rate by rendering internally at a lower resolution.
- DLAA: Prioritizes image quality rather than increasing FPS, so it is generally a poor first choice when performance is already marginal.
- Frame generation: Bethesda also added FSR 3, including upscaling and frame-generation options. Frame generation does not fix a low underlying frame rate or make an unstable experience equivalent to strong native performance. Do not assume the RTX 3060 or 3060 Ti offers the same straightforward DLSS Frame Generation option as newer RTX 40-series cards; available features depend on the installed game version and GPU compatibility.
Bethesda recommends VSync off when DLSS Frame Generation is active. For FSR 3, Bethesda recommends VSync on and a variable-refresh-rate (VRR) monitor for the best experience. See Bethesda’s FSR 3 announcement for its guidance.

Check the rest of the PC, especially on a laptop
A capable GPU cannot compensate for every system bottleneck. Bethesda recommends installing the game on an SSD, updating graphics drivers, and checking which GPU is in use when troubleshooting; its performance support guidance also suggests temporarily disabling the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar.
- CPU: A processor near or below the minimum can hold back frame rates, particularly in dense areas. When the CPU is the limit, lowering resolution may make little difference.
- RAM and storage: Meet the 16 GB RAM requirement and install the game on an SSD, not a hard drive.
- Laptop power and cooling: Laptop RTX 3060 performance varies by power limit, cooling, CPU, memory configuration, and whether the computer is plugged in. Begin at 1080p Medium/High, use the laptop’s performance mode, and test before targeting 1440p. Laptop 3060 Ti configurations are less common; verify the exact model rather than inferring performance from the desktop name.
- Drivers and background tasks: Use current NVIDIA drivers and close unnecessary overlays or applications that consume CPU, memory, or storage bandwidth.
How to troubleshoot unusually low FPS
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD and that at least 16 GB of system RAM is available.
- Update the NVIDIA driver. If the problem began after a driver change, consider a clean driver installation.
- On a desktop, confirm the display is connected to the graphics card. On a laptop or multi-GPU system, confirm Windows and the game are using the discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Temporarily disable the Steam Overlay and Xbox Game Bar, along with other overlays or recording software.
- On a laptop, plug into power and select its performance mode. Check for heat-related throttling.
- Verify the selected resolution, render scale, and upscaling mode in the game’s graphics settings.
- Watch CPU and GPU utilization in a demanding area. Low GPU utilization alongside a heavily loaded CPU can indicate a CPU bottleneck.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs and other background applications.
- Verify the game files through Steam or your PC launcher.
- Check temperatures and clock speeds for thermal throttling, then restart after driver or graphics-setting changes.
- If performance remains abnormal, test a clean configuration before adding mods.
Should you keep your RTX 3060 or upgrade?
Keep the RTX 3060 if you play at 1080p
It remains a sensible card for this game if you are comfortable tuning settings, using DLSS or FSR, and accepting occasional dips rather than demanding a locked 60 FPS everywhere. Make sure the CPU, SSD, and RAM are not the real constraints before replacing the GPU.

If choosing between these cards for gaming performance, the 3060 Ti is generally faster and better suited to 1080p High or a 1440p upscaled compromise. It can still dip in CPU-heavy areas, and it is not a sensible target for 4K/Ultra/60 FPS in Starfield. Do not pay a large premium for the Ti solely based on its name or compare it with a 12 GB 3060 as though VRAM capacity and GPU speed were the same thing.
When an upgrade makes sense
Consider a more powerful GPU if your goal is consistent 60 FPS at 1440p, Ultra settings without upscaling, or high-refresh-rate play—and only after confirming that the CPU and memory are adequate. For a new purchase in 2026, compare these older cards with current-generation options on price, warranty, power use, VRAM, and frame-generation support; current prices and availability are not established here. If the broader PC is also short on RAM, lacks an SSD, or has an old CPU, a complete system upgrade may be more appropriate than a GPU-only swap. The Steam page for Starfield lists the PC requirements; check it before purchasing the game.
