Its central resolution reaches 90 pixels per degree, but its field of view is just 33° × 33°, and its heavy glass optics make the prototype physically enormous. It is not a consumer headset announced for sale.
What is Meta’s Tiramisu VR headset?
Tiramisu is an experimental headset from Meta Reality Labs’ Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems (OPALS) research group. UploadVR reported on August 7, 2025, that Meta planned to demonstrate Tiramisu alongside its Boba prototypes at SIGGRAPH 2025. The conference schedule described the presentation as “Hyperrealistic VR: a 90-PPD, 1400 nits and high contrast headset.” That describes a research demonstration, not a retail launch or a product announcement.
The prototype explores a particular route to visual realism: make the image extremely detailed, bright and high-contrast. Meta DSR director Douglas Lanman said, “Tiramisu isn’t something you can really understand just by reading an abstract,” and compared the experience to seeing a 4K or HDR television for the first time. Those are his impressions of the prototype, not a guarantee that every viewer or VR scene will look photorealistic.
How realistic are Tiramisu’s specifications?
Meta OPALS’ 2025 figures show how far Tiramisu pushes three visual measures compared with the commercial Meta Quest 3. PPD means pixels per degree of viewing angle: it indicates angular image detail, rather than the total pixel count of a display. Tiramisu’s 90 PPD figure is for the center of the view.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Measure | Tiramisu | Meta Quest 3 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Central angular resolution | 90 PPD | 25 PPD; Tiramisu is 3.6 times higher |
| Brightness | 1,400 nits | 100 nits; Tiramisu is 14 times higher |
| Contrast | About three times Quest 3’s contrast | Quest 3 is the comparison baseline; an absolute contrast value is not stated |
These comparisons are Meta Reality Labs OPALS figures from 2025. Higher central PPD can make fine detail look sharper, while brightness and contrast affect the visible range between light and dark. The numbers describe the prototype’s measured characteristics; they do not, by themselves, establish how realistic every image will appear.
Why is Tiramisu so huge?
The design trades a compact form for its optical targets. Meta’s prototype uses heavy, expensive glass lenses, and its physical form has been described as “comically large.” Its field of view is only 33° × 33°, so its extreme detail and brightness come with a much narrower viewing window than the wide-view goal of Meta’s Boba 3 prototype.

Meta has not provided a consumer-product weight for Tiramisu in the cited material. The description of it as huge refers to its research optical design, not a published retail specification. There is also no announced price or launch date.
Tiramisu vs. Boba 3: two different VR goals
Boba 3 is useful context because it aims at a different part of the VR experience. Tiramisu prioritizes image realism; Boba 3 prioritizes how much of the surrounding view the headset can cover. Their disclosed specifications are not a like-for-like contest in which one prototype simply wins every category.

| Specification | Tiramisu | Boba 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Main emphasis | High central detail, brightness and contrast (Meta OPALS, 2025) | Very wide field of view (Meta DSR, 2025) |
| Field of view | 33° × 33° (Meta OPALS, 2025) | 180° horizontal × 120° vertical (Meta DSR, 2025) |
| Resolution detail | 90 PPD central angular resolution (Meta OPALS, 2025) | 4K × 4K per eye; 30 PPD central resolution (Meta DSR, 2025) |
| Weight | A consumer-product weight is not stated in the cited material | 660 g in VR; 840 g with passthrough (Meta DSR, 2025) |
| Computing requirement | Not stated in the cited material | A top-of-the-line GPU and PC system, according to Meta DSR optical scientist Yang Zhao |
Zhao also cautioned that Boba 3 “isn’t going to easily hit a mass-market price point.” That matters if you are imagining it as a near-term headset to buy: Boba 3, like Tiramisu, is a research prototype, and its stated PC requirement points to demanding hardware rather than a standalone consumer device.

No retail listing, consumer price or release date for Tiramisu is established by the cited reporting and Meta research material. The sources describe it as a research prototype and a SIGGRAPH demonstration. Quest 3 is the commercial Meta headset used as the comparison baseline; its figures here should not be mistaken for a promise that Tiramisu’s capabilities are coming to a Quest product.
