Fortnite Sidekicks are customizable companions, not scouts or combat tools. You can give one a name and accessories, but the physical traits you choose are permanent. Their appearance and visibility also depend on the experience you’re playing. Epic’s linked support guidance covers customization, but the current step-by-step Locker controls are not established here, so this guide avoids guessing at menu labels or button presses.
What a Sidekick does in Fortnite
Epic describes Sidekicks as companions that join players in Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, developer-made experiences, and more. They react to the world around them, but they do not provide gameplay scouting: Epic’s Item Shop listing says they do not detect enemies or items.

Sidekick visibility is not universal. In Battle Royale, players can see only the Sidekicks belonging to their team; visibility differs in other experiences. A Sidekick that is not visible to another player may therefore be behaving as intended.
How do I equip a Sidekick in Fortnite?
Epic’s announcement links to Player Support for Sidekick appearance customization, but the available support information does not establish the current Locker steps for equipping one. Because menu labels and controls can change, check Epic’s current Sidekick appearance support page for the latest player instructions rather than relying on unverified button-by-button directions.

How do I customize my Fortnite Sidekick?
Epic says you can change a Sidekick’s name and accessories, while the physical traits you select are permanent. Choose those traits carefully: you can adjust the changeable details later, but the selected physical appearance is the one that defines the Sidekick going forward.
Accessories such as hats and hoodies can be earned with Sidekick Points by spending time together. Epic’s announcement also links to support topics about a greyed-out Next Step button, changing a Sidekick’s name, and repeat purchases; consult those current support pages if you encounter one of those issues.

You can own the same Sidekick cosmetic more than once and assign different appearances to the copies, according to Epic Player Support. Each owned customization must be unique, however; duplicate appearances are not allowed.
Where can I use a Sidekick, and why might I not see it?
Epic introduced Sidekicks for Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, developer-made experiences, and more. That does not mean every experience displays companions in the same way. In Battle Royale, only teammates’ Sidekicks are visible to you; other experiences handle visibility differently. If you cannot see yours or another player’s, consider the experience’s visibility rules before assuming the cosmetic is missing.

How to get a Sidekick
Sidekicks are digital cosmetics sold for V-Bucks through Fortnite’s Item Shop, and availability changes. Check the in-game Item Shop for what is currently available and its current price.
Epic’s Oct. 30, 2025 announcement listed Peels for the Battle Pass arriving Nov. 1, 2025, and Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor for the Shop on Nov. 7, 2025. It also said owners of the Bonesy Back Bling would be granted the Bonesy Sidekick. Those were launch-period details, not a statement of what can be purchased now.

For UEFN creators: Sidekicks as NPCs
Owning a Sidekick cosmetic and putting a Sidekick character into a UEFN island are separate workflows. Epic’s June 5, 2026 announcement says creators can use Sidekicks as scriptable NPCs through the NPC Spawner, standard NPC controls, and Verse APIs. Licensed Sidekicks are excluded from NPC use.
Creator-configured NPCs can use a Sidekick-specific reaction system for behaviors such as following, fetching, fleeing, attacking, and reacting. Depending on the Sidekick, creators can choose from four to eight preset customization channels, including options such as body shape, color and patterns, eye style, distinguishing features, and outfit. Creators can also set size, health and shield values, and whether regular weapons can damage the NPC. They cannot create a brand-new Sidekick from scratch.

Cosmetic Sync can make a configured NPC take the form of the joining player’s equipped Sidekick. Epic’s announcement also describes sleep, eat, react, and action presets, alongside happy, dance, emote, angry, worried, and attack reaction states. It said Control Rig support would arrive in a later release, so check current UEFN documentation before treating that support as available.
