Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most reliable way to tune a Ryzen gaming PC is to establish a repeatable stock baseline, change one setting at a time, and keep only changes that improve the games you play without unacceptable heat, noise, instability or warranty risk. EXPO tunes supported DDR5 memory; Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) can widen the processor’s operating limits; and Curve Optimizer can shift its voltage/frequency curve toward lower voltage. None guarantees a particular FPS gain, and each system needs its own stability checks.
Start with a baseline, not a preset
Before tuning, record what the system does at its current default settings. Run a repeatable CPU workload, such as Cinebench, and a repeatable scene in a game you actually play. Keep the same resolution, graphics settings, scene and background applications for later comparisons.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows and, if available, frametime consistency.
- Log CPU package temperature, effective clocks and package power during the same runs.
- Note fan noise or fan speed, and watch for throttling, crashes or errors.
- Repeat each run enough to distinguish a real change from normal run-to-run variation.
A synthetic CPU score can reveal whether a CPU-focused change affects sustained performance, but it cannot predict a gaming benefit by itself. When a game is GPU-limited, CPU tuning may have little effect on average FPS; it can matter more in CPU-limited scenes or for 1% lows. Compare the metrics that matter for your own games.
What EXPO, PBO and Curve Optimizer change
These are different controls, not interchangeable “performance modes.” Their availability and interaction depend on the Ryzen generation, motherboard firmware and platform.

| Control | What it changes | When to consider it | Main checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXPO | A supported DDR5 memory profile, applying the kit’s configured memory settings rather than leaving memory at default settings. | When the CPU, motherboard and memory kit support the profile and you want to run the kit’s configured settings. | Memory stability, successful booting and game stability. A profile is not a guarantee that every CPU-and-board combination will be stable at those settings. |
| PBO | Allows the processor to operate beyond default infrastructure limits, up to board limits, potentially sustaining higher frequencies when the hardware can support them. | When cooling and motherboard power delivery have headroom and repeatable tests show a useful gain. | Temperature, package power, effective clocks, noise and stability. Board-limit settings can raise heat and power without improving a GPU-limited game. |
| Curve Optimizer | Shifts the voltage/frequency curve toward lower voltages when negative values are used. | When you want to test a more efficient operating point or improve sustained behavior within the system’s thermal limits. | Stability under CPU workloads and games. A setting that passes a short test can still fail later or in a different workload. |
| Manual CPU overclock | Sets CPU operating parameters manually rather than relying solely on automatic boost behavior. | Only when you understand the controls for your specific processor and have a repeatable reason to prefer fixed settings. | Compare workload performance and effective behavior against automatic boost. A manual setting can trade away boost behavior in some workloads; results are generation- and configuration-dependent. |
AMD’s Ryzen Master User Guide, release 3.1.0 dated 20 May 2026, defines PBO as allowing operation beyond default infrastructure limits up to board limits to potentially achieve higher sustained frequencies. AMD describes Curve Optimizer as shifting the voltage/frequency curve to include lower voltages with negative values. These definitions describe what the controls do; they do not promise a universal gaming improvement.
Prepare the platform before changing limits
- Check support. Confirm that your Ryzen platform and memory kit support EXPO if you intend to use it. EXPO is a DDR5 memory-profile control for supported platforms, not a CPU overclock setting.
- Update carefully. Check the motherboard maker’s support page for firmware and AMD’s support page for chipset drivers appropriate to your system. Follow the board maker’s update instructions. After an update, load or confirm default settings and verify the PC is stable before tuning.
- Check cooling and power delivery. Make sure the cooler is mounted and operating properly, airflow is adequate, and the motherboard can support the settings you plan to test. PBO cannot create cooling or power-delivery capacity that the system does not have.
- Keep a recovery route. Know how to restore BIOS defaults or use the motherboard’s documented recovery procedure before experimenting. Save a known-good profile if your firmware supports it, and keep a written note of each change.
Enable and validate EXPO first
Memory settings can affect gaming performance, but they can also introduce instability. Change only the memory profile at first so you can identify whether any new boot issue, error or crash is related to EXPO rather than a CPU setting.

- Open the motherboard’s UEFI/BIOS setup and locate the memory profile control. Its label and menu location vary by board and firmware; select the supported EXPO profile for the installed kit.
- Save and reboot. Allow extra time for the first boot if the board trains memory, and do not interrupt the process unless the board’s instructions say to.
- Run a memory stability test and then use the PC normally, including the games you care about. Look for failed boots, application errors, crashes or corrupted files as well as explicit test errors.
- If problems appear, return to the previous stable setting. Do not proceed to CPU tuning on a memory configuration that has not passed your checks.
If EXPO is unstable, the profile’s advertised settings are not proof that they will work on every individual CPU, motherboard and memory combination. Confirm the kit and board support details, try a less aggressive supported memory setting if you are comfortable doing so, or use defaults.
Test PBO conservatively
Once memory is stable, test PBO separately. Start with AMD specification limits rather than immediately selecting motherboard limits or a more aggressive Advanced configuration. This gives you a clearer comparison and avoids assuming that the broadest available limits are automatically best.

- Record the stable EXPO-on baseline, if you chose to keep EXPO enabled.
- Enable PBO using AMD specification limits in UEFI/BIOS or the applicable Ryzen Master controls. The menu names vary across boards and software versions.
- Repeat the same CPU run and game scene. Compare sustained effective clocks, package power, temperature, average FPS, 1% lows and noise with the prior baseline.
- Keep the setting only if it produces a worthwhile result in your target workload and remains stable within your temperature and noise preferences.
- Only then consider motherboard-limit PBO or PBO Advanced, and only if cooling and board capability justify further testing. Change one limit or mode at a time and repeat the same checks.
Higher limits can let a processor draw more power and produce more heat, but they do not ensure higher gaming performance. If the CPU is already constrained by its temperature, or the game is limited elsewhere, a more permissive PBO setting may add heat and fan noise without a useful improvement.
Use Curve Optimizer in small steps
A negative Curve Optimizer value shifts the curve toward lower voltage, but the stable range is specific to each processor and system. There is no universal safe offset or guaranteed undervolt amount. Start with a small all-core negative offset rather than copying an aggressive value from another PC.

- Keep the last known-good BIOS profile and change Curve Optimizer only, leaving other CPU controls unchanged.
- Apply a small negative all-core value and run a repeatable CPU stress test, then test several games or other workloads you use.
- Watch for test errors, application crashes, unexpected reboots, freezes or failures that occur only during light or intermittent workloads.
- If the setting passes, make the next adjustment small and test again. If it fails, revert to the last stable value instead of increasing the negative offset.
- Consider per-core tuning only after the all-core approach is stable. Per-core settings can be more granular, but each core and workload combination still needs validation.
AMD’s Ryzen Master includes profiles and a Smart Stress Test for controlled experiments. Use them to explore settings, but do not treat a short pass as proof of long-term stability. After a promising change survives testing, apply it through the BIOS if you want it to persist there, then verify it again after reboot and longer gaming sessions.

| Measure | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Average FPS | Whether the change improved overall frame rate in that scene and configuration. |
| 1% lows and frametimes | Whether slower or less consistent frames improved, even if the average changed little. |
| Effective clocks and package power | Whether the CPU sustained a different operating level, and what power cost accompanied it. |
| Temperature and fan noise | Whether the performance change fits your thermal and acoustic limits. |
| Stability | Whether the setting survives memory and CPU tests, reboots and extended use in your games. |
Keep the least complicated setting that meets your goal. A larger synthetic score is not a reason to accept worse 1% lows, persistent noise, instability or temperatures you are not comfortable with. If results are indistinguishable within normal test variation, prefer the stable default.
Understand the warranty risk
AMD’s product warranty footnotes warn that damage caused by overclocking is not covered, and that operating PBO outside specifications can invalidate warranty coverage. Treat this as a material trade-off before changing PBO or other overclocking controls; consult the warranty terms for your specific product and region rather than assuming a particular setting is covered.
