Asked whether he recognized scenes he knew had not happened, Hansen answered “almost every one of them,” according to Variety. Is Primetime a true story?
The film is billed as “inspired by true events,” but Vanity Fair describes it as a surreal, fictionalized media collage rather than a conventional biopic. It stars Pattinson as Hansen in 2006, when To Catch a Predator material was being developed as a primetime attraction. That framing matters: the film’s label does not establish that each scene is a record of events as they happened. Vanity Fair’s coverage discusses the film’s approach and interviews director Lance Oppenheim and actor Alex Winter; it does not provide a direct response from Oppenheim to Hansen’s specific allegations.
What was the real show’s background?
To Catch a Predator began in 2004 as a Dateline NBC segment, according to Vanity Fair. It featured online decoys and sting operations involving men alleged to have sought sexual contact with children they met online. Hansen’s criticism spans two related but separate objections: that Pattinson’s characterization bears little resemblance to him, and that the film’s events distort his experience of the show and its work.
