Dan Houser says he has not watched Netflix’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look—and plans to avoid it because he does not want other creative work to distract or influence him.
Why is Dan Houser avoiding the GTA VI feature?
Houser said, “I haven’t seen it yet,” and added, “I will try and avoid it because I always try and avoid stuff that’s going to distract or disrupt me creatively.” Those remarks come from Houser’s Variety podcast interview, as quoted in Kotaku’s October 2, 2026 report.
He explained that he spends much of his time making open-world games and thinking about innovative ways to market them. Watching other teams’ work can make him compare their creative choices with his own. He also said that when he plays open-world games, he tends to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the teams behind them in real time, which he finds distracting.
A habit he says goes back to earlier projects
Houser described avoiding potentially influential work as part of his creative process. As Kotaku reports, he said that after work began on Red Dead Redemption, he stopped watching Westerns, and that he did not watch The Sopranos until after leaving Rockstar. These are Houser’s recollections, not independently verified details of those productions.

What is the GTA VI Netflix Extended Look?
Netflix’s official title is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. Netflix announced the feature on August 27, 2026, saying it was available on the service and had been captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Netflix’s listing gives its runtime as 27 minutes. Netflix’s announcement and listing call it an “Extended Look”; some coverage describes it as a gameplay reveal.
Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said the company was “honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.” The feature was not limited to Netflix after its premiere: PC Gamer reported on August 28, 2026 that it appeared on YouTube about six hours later. PC Gamer described it as 26 minutes; Netflix’s official listing says 27.
