Stone Kite launched in October 2026 as a world-building studio co-founded by Bungie co-founder Jason Jones and author Margaret Stohl, who is its CEO. Its first property, One Zero One, starts as a four-part comic series—not a game—while the studio says it plans to extend the story world into prose, audio, and screen projects.

Who founded Stone Kite?

GamesBeat reported on October 1, 2026, that Jones and Stohl had officially launched Stone Kite. Jones co-founded Bungie and created the Halo and Destiny franchises, according to GamesBeat; Stohl is an author and Stone Kite’s CEO. The studio says it is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. GamesBeat’s launch report describes Stone Kite as bringing creators from film, television, comics, and literature together to develop original universes across media.

One Zero One, the studio’s first story universe, began as an original manuscript by Jones. He said, “I’ve spent my whole life making games, but I’ve always wanted to write.” GamesBeat reports that Stohl helped him develop the manuscript.

What does Stone Kite mean by transmedia storytelling?

Stone Kite’s stated distinction is about how a story world is developed. In the studio’s view, transmedia often means adapting a story or concept that began in one medium into others. Stone Kite says it instead wants creators from different disciplines to shape a shared world together from the outset, with distinct ways for audiences to enter it—for example, through comics, fiction, or podcasts.

Stohl described that intention this way: “Instead of starting in one medium and adapting outward, we bring the best global creators from different disciplines into the room from day one to shape the world together.” Stone Kite’s approach page calls its method “fractal,” meaning the studio aims for consistency from major story beats down to small details, and states: “We are a creator-driven studio.”

In practical terms, the ambition is coordinated world-building across formats rather than releasing one work first and commissioning adaptations later. That is the studio’s stated model, not evidence that the approach is unique across the industry or that it will succeed. The launch reports establish the announced strategy and initial property, not the effectiveness of the model.

What is One Zero One about?

GamesBeat describes One Zero One as a near-future story about a worldwide conflict between humanity and a rogue army of AI-driven robotic soldiers. It originated in Jones’s manuscript and is the first property Stone Kite has announced.

Is One Zero One a game or a comic?

The launch product is a comic: a four-part limited series. GamesBeat reported that its first issue was available in digital and print formats. The report does not establish a game as part of the first release.

At launch, GamesBeat said later issues were planned for free online release through early 2027, with prose, audio, and screen projects intended to expand the world during 2027. These were plans reported at launch, not confirmation that each release arrived on schedule. The first issue’s print cover program included multiple creators, according to the same report.

Where can readers find the comic?

At the time of GamesBeat’s October 1, 2026 report, the first issue could be read digitally through Stone Kite, and print preorders were available through the studio’s store. Those details describe launch-period availability; current inventory, ordering options, and digital access may have changed. Check the launch report and Stone Kite’s current channels for up-to-date access. The report does not establish a current marketplace listing.

Who else is involved with Stone Kite?

GamesBeat lists founding members Margaret Stohl, Jason Jones, Stephen Wacker, Lewis Peterson, Matt Johnson, and Jeanine Schaefer. It names a wider contributor group that includes Eric Heisserer, Christina Strain, Kris Anka, Dan Panosian, Ramón Pérez, Alitha Martinez, Raúl Allén, and Hyeonjin Kim.

GamesBeat reported that more than 200 creators had contributed to the studio’s upcoming slate in 2026. A separate October 2, 2026 republication of GamesIndustry.biz reporting said more than 250 creators were working with Stone Kite. Because those launch-period reports use different wording and give different counts, neither figure should be treated as a settled total.
