What Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Zero Company Can Teach the Movies About Clear Identity

Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Star Wars Zero Company are built around very different activities—racing runs and turn-based squad tactics—but both give their projects a clear center. That contrast suggests a useful lesson for Star Wars storytelling: a familiar universe can enrich a focused story without having to carry it. It is an argument about creative direction, not proof that Star Wars movies as a whole have failed. Director Matt Shakman has described The Fantastic Four: First Steps as a Marvel film designed to stand on its own, offering one specific example of that approach.

Two Star Wars games, two distinct reasons to play

Lucasfilm’s official descriptions make the contrast unusually clear. Lucasfilm’s Star Wars games page calls Zero Company a single-player, turn-based tactics game developed by Bit Reactor with Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. Set in the twilight of the Clone Wars, it puts players in the role of Hawks, a former Republic officer leading a squad of professionals.

The same page describes Galactic Racer as a “runs-based, high-stakes reinvention of racing” in the lawless Outer Rim. One game is about commanding a squad; the other is about racing. They share a setting, not a core loop.

That difference matters. A franchise game does not need to imitate another entry’s structure to feel connected to the same fictional world. The setting can supply atmosphere, factions, history, and a recognizable sense of place while the game’s main activity remains legible on its own terms.

What Galactic Racer’s structure shows—and where it falls short

In its PS5 review, TechRadar describes Galactic Racer as built around repeated races, branching route choices, vehicle and perk loadouts, and progression. Those systems give the racing a continuing context: players are not just completing one isolated event, but making choices and returning for further runs. TechRadar’s positive assessment emphasizes the racing and replayability, while noting limited character depth for Shade and repetition in some events.

PC Gamer reviewer Jody Macgregor highlights a related strength: the game uses worldbuilding to make a racing sequence feel part of a broader racing culture. His criticism points to a different standard, however. He argues that the story’s ending offers little payoff after building expectation. A strong setting and a coherent activity can give a story texture, but they do not substitute for a satisfying resolution.

That is a useful distinction for any franchise project. Worldbuilding works best when it deepens what the audience is already doing or following; setup still needs a payoff. These reviews offer individual critical judgments about one game, not a verdict on Star Wars games generally. Macgregor’s 76 score is his publication’s review rating, not a measure of player consensus or an industry statistic.

The movie lesson is an argument, not a proven franchise-wide verdict

The comparison invites a question: can a Star Wars film make its central story as clear and satisfying as these games make their core activities? The evidence here does not establish that the movies, as a group, have failed to do so. Macgregor writes that “The Star Wars movies have always had a mashup quality,” but that is one reviewer’s characterization, not a historical finding or proof of a general flaw.

The narrower lesson is more defensible: a recognizable universe is not itself a story, and references or setup cannot replace a strong central experience and a payoff. That applies to games and films alike. Whether any particular movie achieves it requires judging that film, rather than treating a broad claim about the franchise as settled fact.

What Marvel’s example actually demonstrates

Marvel provides a specific example of a filmmaker describing a stand-alone approach. In a TechRadar interview report, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman said: “You don’t need to see other Marvel movies or shows to appreciate it. There are no Easter eggs. There are no other heroes. It’s just about them, their world, and their story.”

That is Shakman’s stated intent for this film—not an independent assessment of how well it works, and not a description of every Marvel movie. The useful comparison is about viewer entry point and story focus: Shakman says audiences can follow this story without prior Marvel viewing, and centers it on its own heroes and world. It does not establish that Marvel films are better than Star Wars films, or that every shared-universe story should avoid connections.

A shared setting can support a focused experience

Zero Company and Galactic Racer show how far apart two projects can be while still drawing on the same franchise. Their common ground is not a shared genre or formula; it is the opportunity to make Star Wars meaningful to the activity at hand. One can use the Clone Wars setting to frame squad command, while the other can turn the Outer Rim into a racing culture.

The strongest version of that approach gives a new audience a clear way in, rewards returning fans without requiring homework, and makes its own story or activity satisfying. Galactic Racer’s mixed notes on replayability and story payoff also show why a distinct premise is a starting point rather than a guarantee: the execution still has to deliver on the expectations it creates.
