To switch prerecorded podcast episodes automatically during a YouTube live stream, add the episode files in order to an OBS Studio VLC Video source and connect OBS to a YouTube live event. Enable looping only if you want the sequence to repeat. If each episode also needs a different title card or layout, set up separate scenes and a suitable automation trigger; a playlist changes the media, not the scene.

Choose what should change automatically

  • Episode audio and video only: Use one VLC Video source with an ordered playlist. This suits a stream where the same layout stays on screen as episodes advance.
  • The episode and its graphics or layout: Use scenes or sources for the different looks, then configure a scene change at each file’s end using an automation method that supports that trigger. OBS documents scenes and transitions, but the exact end-of-file automation setup depends on the method and installed version.
  • Repeat the sequence: Turn on playlist looping and verify that playback returns to the first episode after the last one.
  • Begin at a scheduled time: Schedule the YouTube live event separately from configuring the episode sequence. Scheduling does not make the encoder play the files.

Set up automatic episode playback in OBS

  1. Prepare the episode files. Save local copies of the recordings and decide the intended order. Choose whether the list should play once, repeat, or shuffle. Avoid shuffle if episode order matters.
  2. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the VLC build to OBS: OBS notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  3. Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene for the stream, add a VLC Video source, and choose the episode files in the order you want them to play. OBS’s media-source documentation covers playlist playback and the loop and shuffle controls: OBS Media Sources.
  4. Set the playback behavior. Enable looping if the episodes should repeat; leave it off for a one-pass sequence. Keep shuffle off for a fixed sequence. Make sure the source is visible in the scene and that its playback behavior matches how you intend to use it.
  5. Add scene changes only if the picture must change. Create and arrange the required scenes, sources, and transitions using OBS’s scene and source concepts: OBS Sources Guide. If a new scene must appear exactly when an episode ends, confirm that your chosen automation method and current OBS setup support an end-of-media trigger. The official scene documentation does not provide a complete, version-specific end-of-file switching recipe.
  6. Test the whole sequence. Preview the episodes in order, check sound and picture, and observe what happens at the end of the final file. If you use looping, check the transition back to the first episode. Rehearsing the sequence before a public stream is practical production advice, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a live stream or schedule one for the intended start time. YouTube’s encoder guide describes stream setup and scheduling: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not share or publish it.
  3. Start streaming from OBS, then complete any required Go Live step in Live Control Room for the workflow you selected. YouTube’s private and unlisted visibility options can help you check the setup before a public broadcast.
  4. Confirm that the correct program is reaching YouTube and that the playlist advances as expected. YouTube receives the encoder’s output; it does not select the next podcast episode for OBS.

Playlist playback and scene switching are different jobs

A playlist source is enough when one layout can remain on screen while the media files change. Use scenes or other source arrangements when an episode needs a distinct title card, guest graphic, or layout. A scene transition changes the OBS program picture; it does not, by itself, determine when a media file ends. For automatic scene changes tied to episode endings, verify the trigger behavior in the specific automation setup you use rather than assuming a playlist will switch scenes.

Do not confuse episode playlists with YouTube HLS playlists

The VLC playlist in OBS is a list of podcast media files. An HLS playlist is part of the video transport sent from an encoder to YouTube; it is not an episode queue. YouTube’s HLS setup specifies 1–4 second segment duration, Transport Stream format, HTTPS transfer, and no more than five outstanding segments. Those protocol requirements are not controls for choosing the next episode: Set up an HLS stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The episodes play in the wrong order: Reopen the source’s playlist and arrange the files in the intended sequence; disable shuffle if enabled.
  • The list stops after the last episode: Enable looping if you want it to restart. If it should play once, stopping at the end is expected.
  • The video advances but the graphics do not: The playlist advances media, not OBS scenes. Configure separate scenes and a compatible scene automation trigger if the visual layout must change per episode.
  • The scheduled event is not playing episodes: Scheduling creates the YouTube event; OBS still has to send the program feed, with the playlist configured as a source.
  • The stream does not appear live on YouTube: Check that OBS has the correct event’s stream URL and key, that OBS is sending, and that you have completed the Live Control Room step required by the chosen workflow.

What is established for creators in India

The documented OBS and YouTube workflow is general rather than India-specific. The cited guidance does not establish country-specific account eligibility, feature availability, latency, or network reliability, so check the current Live Control Room options on your account and test your own connection. No separate physical switcher is required for the described file-playback workflow; OBS handles the playlist and sends the program output.
