Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo play music between videos in an OBS 24/7 stream, put the music in a dedicated interstitial scene and switch to that scene between clips. Use a Media Source for one looping track or a VLC Video Source for a playlist. OBS does not automatically insert music between videos, so you need to design the scene changes or playback sequence yourself.
Choose how the music should play
First decide whether music belongs only in the gaps or should continue under the videos. The right OBS source and scene layout depend on that choice.
| Setup | Best for | Controls and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One audio file, such as a track you want to repeat | Loop; Restart playback when source becomes active; Close file when inactive. It is a single-file source, not a multi-file playlist. |
| VLC Video Source | An ordered or shuffled sequence of files | Loop Playlist; Shuffle Playlist; visibility behavior. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
OBS documents both source types and their controls in its Media Sources guide. Its guide does not promise gapless playlist transitions; test the actual files and playback behavior before leaving a stream unattended.
Set up one looping music track
- Add the source: In the OBS scene where you want music to play, select Sources → + → Media Source. Create a new source or choose an existing one.
- Select the file: In the source properties, enable the local-file option and browse to your audio file. OBS documents support for formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, along with common video formats.
- Set playback behavior: Enable Loop if you want the track to repeat when it finishes. Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether playback starts from the beginning when the source becomes active. Choose this based on whether you want a fresh start on each interstitial or playback to retain its position.
- Check file handling: If the source offers Close file when inactive, consider whether it suits your setup. Test hiding and reactivating the source so you know how it behaves in your scenes.
- Balance levels: Play a video and the music together, then adjust their levels in the OBS audio mixer so neither overwhelms the other. Listen to the transition as well as the steady-state mix.
Set up a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC first: VLC must be installed for the VLC Video Source to be available. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source: In the target scene, select Sources → + → VLC Video Source. Create a source and use its properties to add the files you want in the playlist.
- Choose the order: Arrange the playlist in the order you want. Enable Loop Playlist to replay the playlist after it ends, or Shuffle Playlist if you want a shuffled sequence. The OBS documentation describes both controls; it does not guarantee gapless playback.
- Choose visibility behavior: Set the source’s behavior for when it is hidden, based on whether playback should stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue while hidden. Test the selected behavior during your scene changes.
- Test the loop: Let the playlist reach its end and start again. Check that every file decodes and plays as expected, and listen for gaps or unwanted overlap.
Play music only between videos
A practical pattern is to create one scene for video playback and another for music or interstitials. This is a scene-design approach, not a built-in OBS feature that detects video endings and inserts music automatically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Build the video scene: Add the video source or sources that make up your program.
- Build the interstitial scene: Add a Media Source with one looping track or a VLC Video Source with a playlist. Add any visual element you want displayed during the gap.
- Switch between scenes: Move to the interstitial scene when a video ends, then return to the video scene when you are ready to continue. Use the transition that suits your presentation.
- Decide how music re-enters: If the music source becomes active again after being hidden, choose whether it should restart or follow its configured visibility behavior. Test repeated switches so the music does not unexpectedly restart, stop, or continue under the videos.
OBS source controls provide the playback behavior, but they do not by themselves schedule a scene switch at each video boundary. If you need unattended switching, verify that your particular scene and source arrangement does it as intended rather than assuming the playlist will trigger it.
Keep music playing underneath videos
If you want continuous background music rather than music only in the gaps, put the music source in a scene that also contains the video source. Balance the music against the video audio in the OBS mixer, and test scenes where the music source may be hidden or reactivated.

Whether the same source continues seamlessly across different scenes depends on where the source is placed and how its visibility behavior is configured. Test transitions in your actual OBS scene collection; do not assume that a source in one scene will behave identically when you switch to another.
Check music rights before going live
Use music licensed for both the live broadcast and any recording you retain. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if detected content remains. If you have a license for third-party material, the rights holder may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruptions. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on providers to hold necessary rights, including music licensing rights. A track described as “free” is not automatically free of Content ID or licensing issues. YouTube’s tips to find safe music explain general precautions. The YouTube Audio Library is an official option to investigate for YouTube use, but check the license for your intended use; suitability for every platform or use is not established here.
If you use a paid music service, check its license for livestreaming, the relevant platforms and territories, monetization, and VOD or archive use. Keep a copy of the license and any required attribution details.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Play every file in the playlist and check the playlist’s end behavior.
- Switch between video and interstitial scenes repeatedly; listen for gaps, restarts, continued playback, or overlap.
- Confirm the music level remains appropriate when video audio is present.
- Check that files remain accessible to OBS and that VLC is installed in the matching 64-bit or 32-bit version for your OBS installation.
- Verify that your music rights cover the broadcast and any retained recording.
Troubleshoot common problems
The VLC Video Source option is missing
VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
The playlist stops when you expected it to repeat
Check that Loop Playlist is enabled. Test the final file and the transition back to the start: the OBS documentation lists the loop control but does not promise a seamless transition.

Music stops or restarts after a scene switch
Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior or the Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active setting. The chosen behavior determines whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while hidden. Test it with the exact scene sequence you plan to use.
Music plays under a video when it should be limited to gaps
Check whether the music source is active in the video scene or set to continue while hidden. A separate interstitial scene can keep the intended layout clearer, but you must still switch scenes at the appropriate time.
The live stream is interrupted after music plays
YouTube may detect third-party content during a live stream. Check the rights for both live use and archives; if the music is licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. A “free” label alone does not establish that a track is safe to stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
