For a 24/7 rain stream, use about -14 LUFS integrated as a practical starting point—not a YouTube rule—then check the actual outgoing audio and listen on everyday devices. Keep the rain comfortable and natural rather than crushing its texture with limiting to hit a number.
What audio level should a rain stream use?
Start near -14 LUFS integrated, a third-party recommendation for finished audio in a 24/7 stream, not an official YouTube specification. StreamNeo’s 24/7 stream audio guidance suggests this as a practical target. YouTube’s live-stream and encoding guidance does not specify a LUFS target.
Integrated loudness describes perceived program loudness across a stretch of audio; it is not the same as peak level or the sound pressure level in a room. The Audio Engineering Society (AES) explains that integrated loudness uses frequency weighting and gating over time. A peak meter can reveal transient or clipping risk, but it cannot tell you by itself whether the whole rain program sounds consistently loud.
How to set and check the level
- Choose representative audio. Include typical rain, the loudest thunder or intensity changes, and transitions across loops. A quiet, steady section alone may not represent the full program.
- Measure the outgoing signal. Use an integrated loudness meter on the actual encoder output or a representative capture of the stream. StreamNeo’s guide describes using FFmpeg’s
loudnormfilter in measurement-only mode to inspect audio. Measuring only the source file may miss changes introduced later in the signal chain. - Use -14 LUFS integrated as a reference. If the feed is substantially quieter, make modest gain adjustments and remeasure. Watch peaks and listen for distortion; do not rely on a platform target to correct the level for you.
- Listen at ordinary settings. Check a phone speaker, headphones, and a typical home speaker at the volume people might use for sleep or background ambience. The rain should remain audible and even without becoming tiring.
- Test a representative live stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. Listen to the delivered feed, not just the local file.
Keep rain natural, not merely loud
Rain ambience often depends on subtle texture and a stable sense of space. Strong limiting can reduce the difference between quiet detail and louder events, making the sound feel flattened. AES notes that loudness normalization can require peak limiting and that limiting can alter sound. Adjust gain carefully and judge the result by listening as well as measuring.

AES recommends keeping integrated loudness above -20 LUFS to help prevent vulnerable players from sounding too quiet even at maximum gain, while noting exceptions for material with wide dynamic range. That is AES guidance, not a YouTube live-stream rule or a substitute for checking your own stream.
YouTube playback can affect what viewers hear
Viewer playback is not always a direct reflection of the encoded level. YouTube documents Stable volume, which balances quieter and louder portions where available and can be toggled by viewers. YouTube also says some audio and video enhancements are applied selectively. That makes device checks useful: a meter reading cannot guarantee the same perceived volume for every viewer.

Audio encoding settings are separate from loudness
YouTube’s live encoder guidance names AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its recommended upload encoding settings list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio and a 48 kHz sample rate. These are encoding details, not a recommended LUFS level for rain or other live audio.
