You can loop a single compatible video with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1, or send a playlist through the concat demuxer and copy its encoded streams with -c copy. That avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it does not make mismatched files compatible: codecs, stream layouts, timing, container support and YouTube’s ingest requirements still have to line up.
Choose the right FFmpeg method

FFmpeg defines stream copy as passing packets without decoding, filtering or encoding. It saves the encoding step; it is not a format converter. If a source needs resizing, a frame-rate change, an overlay, a filter or a codec change, the affected streams must be decoded and encoded.
Check the files before building the playlist
Inspect every file with ffprobe before relying on packet copying. Note the video and audio codecs, number and arrangement of streams, dimensions, frame rate, time base and duration. Compare those properties across all files, not just the first one.
- Extra audio tracks or other streams can complicate a playlist. Decide which video and audio streams you intend to send, and map them explicitly in FFmpeg.
- Different codecs, stream layouts or time bases can prevent clean concat-demuxer playback. The concat demuxer expects matching streams and timing characteristics.
- If files do not match, use different source files or normalize them beforehand. Normalizing may require re-encoding; live transcoding also means this is no longer a wholly no-reencode stream.
A concat list commonly contains one file 'path' entry per input, in playback order. Use paths that are valid for your operating system and list-file location; quoting and safe-path handling depend on those paths and your local setup. Do not assume one list file will work unchanged for arbitrary filenames.

Set YouTube Live up first
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or prepare the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it in a script, log, screenshot or article; use a local configuration or another private method to supply it to FFmpeg.
- Check the current YouTube encoder settings against the source properties. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum.
Copy mode preserves the source’s encoded properties; -c copy will not make the bitrate, codec, frame rate or keyframe cadence conform to YouTube’s profile. YouTube’s published H.264 figures illustrate why the target matters: for 1080p30 it lists a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 720p30 it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable. Match the source and selected profile, and leave network headroom.
Loop one video with packet copying
For a single file, put -stream_loop -1 before its input. The loop option applies to the input that follows it. A schematic command is:

This example maps the first video and first audio stream; change the maps if your file uses different streams, and omit an audio map only if the source has no audio. Do not place a real stream key in a public or shared command. The output muxer must support the copied streams; stream copy can fail if the target container cannot carry required source information.

The concat demuxer is intended for compatible inputs, not arbitrary collections of MP4s. Test a transition between files; timestamp or stream mismatches may cause playback problems even if each file works alone.

Test the full path and keep it supervised
- Test with representative motion and audio. Confirm the live preview appears and inspect YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Watch at least one file transition for gaps, frozen video, missing audio or timestamp problems.
- Check that your sustained upload capacity exceeds the total streaming bitrate, with room for normal network variation.
- If running on your own computer or server, use an operating-system service manager or supervisor to restart or alert on FFmpeg process exit. Stream copy reduces encoding work but FFmpeg still has to read files, mux packets and transmit them continuously.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily one retrievable replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, keep a local recording or plan shorter sessions and verify that the resulting files are present.

- FFmpeg reports that streams or parameters do not match: compare codecs, stream counts, layouts and time bases across the playlist. Replace incompatible files or normalize them before streaming; that may require re-encoding.
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health: check the selected ingest profile against the source codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio and bitrate. Packet copying cannot correct a mismatch; choose compatible files or transcode.
- The command starts but audio or video is missing: review the
-mapoptions and confirm the selected streams exist in the inputs. Extra tracks can make an assumed mapping wrong. - The stream fails at a playlist transition: check the files’ timing and stream compatibility, then test that boundary separately. A concat list does not guarantee arbitrary files will join cleanly.
- The live ends when the computer or process stops: FFmpeg is running on that machine, so it needs to remain powered, connected and supervised. A cloud service is an alternative if you do not want to maintain a local process.
- The live is missing from saved broadcasts: check its duration. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube; retain a local recording when you need an archive.
