To replay one video in YouTube’s player, use Loop; to cycle through several videos, use playlist repeat. Neither setting creates a YouTube Live broadcast. Live streaming sends a real-time feed to viewers, while looping is a playback control for videos that are already on YouTube. If you want to broadcast a playlist as a live feed, you need a separately configured encoder or cloud service.
Which option fits what you want to do?
| Your goal | Use | What viewers get |
|---|---|---|
| Replay one existing video | Single-video Loop | The video starts over in the YouTube player; it is not a live broadcast. |
| Replay a sequence of existing videos | Playlist repeat | The playlist cycles during ordinary playback; it is not a live broadcast. |
| Broadcast a live feed with real-time interaction | YouTube Live | A live stream, which may include chat and DVR depending on settings and availability. |
| Show a playlist as if it were a live broadcast | A separately configured encoder or cloud workflow | A live feed assembled and sent to YouTube; the exact setup and continuity depend on the tool. |
How to loop one video or repeat a playlist
YouTube’s repeat controls apply to playback. They do not send a live feed to your channel.
On a computer
- For one video, play it and right-click inside the video player.
- Choose Loop. The current video repeats when it reaches the end.
- For a playlist, play a video from that playlist and expand the playlist panel.
- Select the playlist’s Loop control to repeat the sequence.
On Android
- For a single video, open the video’s Settings, choose Additional settings, then turn on Loop video.
- For a playlist, use the loop control in the playlist control box.
- Tap the playlist loop control again if you want to repeat only the current video; YouTube indicates this with a “1” on the loop icon.
On a TV or gaming console
Use the player’s Repeat control and choose whether to repeat the currently playing video or the playlist. Labels and control placement can vary by device and app version. YouTube’s current device-specific instructions are in its Loop videos or playlists on YouTube help page.
What YouTube Live does differently
YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through a video feed, chat, and more. It lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as streaming methods. To use Live, a channel must meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements; general requirements include a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days and a minimum age of 16. Requirements can differ by method, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before you plan a broadcast. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.

YouTube’s documentation covers repeating a playlist during ordinary playback and sending a live feed through Live. It does not document a native Live Control Room feature that takes a YouTube playlist as its broadcast source. Broadcasting prerecorded clips in sequence therefore requires a separately configured production workflow, such as software or an encoder that assembles and sends the feed. Confirm the tool’s behavior, your channel’s eligibility, and your rights to use every video and audio track; a playlist’s repeat control alone does not make this happen.
When an encoder is relevant
YouTube describes encoder workflows for sharing a screen or gameplay, using external audio or video hardware, and managing more advanced production. An encoder is not necessary for the player’s Loop controls. For a playlist-to-live setup, it is the production layer that can combine or play the source material and send the resulting feed to YouTube. Exact steps depend on the software and configuration you choose.

Live-stream controls and what happens afterward
DVR for viewers
YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and device or app versions may impose lower limits. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast, though a recording may be available afterward.
Stream archives
YouTube says live-stream archives are uploaded to the channel by default. Visibility and other settings affect who can find or watch an archive, so an upload should not be assumed to be publicly discoverable. You can organize an archive and highlight clips into playlists. See YouTube’s guidance on DVR and promoting live streams.

Common points of confusion
- “Loop” does not mean “go live.” It repeats playback in the player; it does not create a live event or live chat.
- A playlist is a collection, not a broadcast source by itself. Playlist repeat cycles that collection in ordinary playback. A live feed built from prerecorded videos needs a separate production workflow.
- An encoder is optional for playback, but relevant to a produced live feed. Choose one only if your goal requires broadcasting a feed, not merely repeating a video for yourself or viewers using the player.
- Continuous unattended broadcasting is not guaranteed by these playback controls. Confirm how your chosen encoder or cloud workflow handles interruptions and recovery before relying on it.
