To loop several video files in a YouTube live stream from your own computer, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to a stream you create in YouTube Studio. This repeats the playlist, but it does not keep a broadcast running if your computer, power, OBS, VLC, or internet connection fails. For an unattended stream without a computer running at home, you can instead upload the videos to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and start the cloud stream.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. YouTube live-stream eligibility
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- The video files you want to play, with audio and order checked in advance. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; test your own files in the source before broadcasting.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder settings you choose. YouTube’s bitrate values are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee about your connection.
Set up the looping playlist in OBS
- Open OBS and choose a scene. Select an existing scene or create one for the stream. Add any layout elements you need, such as a background or text, before testing the video source.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is not available, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS Sources Guide
- Add your video files. In the VLC Video source properties, add the files to the playlist and arrange them in the order you want. Enable Loop Playlist so the source restarts after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for listed order; turn it on only if you want randomized playback. OBS Media Sources
- Check the picture and sound. Preview the scene and watch at least one representative file from beginning to end. Confirm that the video fits the canvas, audio is audible without clipping, and the next file begins as expected. The documented loop setting establishes playlist restart; it does not promise seamless transitions between files.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder workflow supplies the stream URL and stream key. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Enter the ingest details in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service, and connect or enter the stream URL and key shown for your event. Follow the current connection instructions in YouTube Studio if its available options differ. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose a protocol and video settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source material, and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate; use the guidance for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating those figures as universal. - Start the encoder and verify the live preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public or sharing its link. YouTube advises testing before going live. YouTube live streaming tips
Plan for long streams and interruptions
OBS looping handles what happens when the playlist reaches its last file; it does not automatically recover from a stopped encoder, computer shutdown, power loss, or internet outage. A local broadcast depends on the computer, OBS, VLC, power, and connection remaining available. Keep an eye on the stream-health panel and be ready to diagnose interruptions rather than assuming a looping playlist guarantees 24/7 continuity.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your intended broadcast runs longer, plan separately for the archive and for continuity; do not assume a single long stream will be archived in full. YouTube encoder setup guidance
Common problems and fixes
