RTMPS encrypts the connection; it does not secure the key wherever it is stored or supplied to FFmpeg on your VPS. YouTube documents the key setup and reset steps, but the sources here do not establish a universally safe VPS-specific storage or injection method.
Why the stream key needs protection
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” An encoder uses the key to send the feed, and YouTube uses it to accept that feed. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel, so treat it as a credential rather than ordinary configuration text. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains its role and handling.
Keep the key out of operational documentation, support tickets, shell transcripts, deployment bundles, and backups where practical. These are prudent places to check because they may contain copied configuration; YouTube’s guidance establishes the key’s password-like role, rather than listing these specific leak paths.
What RTMPS protects—and what it does not
FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. That protects the connection in transit between the encoder and the receiving service when configured and supported. It does not establish that the key is safe at rest on the VPS, hidden from users with server access, or absent from logs and process inspection. FFmpeg’s RTMPS documentation describes the transport, not a VPS secret-storage policy.

Keep those two security questions separate: use the secure transport YouTube and your FFmpeg setup support, and separately decide how the key is stored and made available to the encoder. The available official documentation does not verify one particular file-permission pattern, environment variable, command-line technique, service-manager feature, or provider secret store as safe for every VPS setup. Those details depend on your operating system, service manager, FFmpeg build, and hosting environment; verify the behavior for your actual setup before adopting a recipe.
Configure or replace the key through YouTube

Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Go Live to reach Live Control Room.

Open the Stream tab and locate the stream key you intend to use. YouTube says owners or managers can reset a key.

For a regular encoder setup, copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its stream-key field. In your FFmpeg deployment, configure the corresponding endpoint and credential according to the method you have verified for your system. Do not paste a live key into public notes or support requests.

If you suspect the key has been exposed, use its reset control in Live Control Room. Then replace the old key in the FFmpeg configuration or credential source and restart or reload the streaming process as required by your deployment. The old key should no longer be treated as valid; confirm the encoder reconnects using the newly generated key.
YouTube’s setup instructions are in Set up your encoder for live streaming. The precise steps for safely delivering the replacement key to a VPS process are environment-specific, not a YouTube-prescribed universal configuration.

Limit access to the channel and VPS
YouTube recommends giving channel administrative access only to people you trust. Apply that principle to both sides of the workflow: restrict who can manage the channel and who can access the VPS or its deployment materials. YouTube privacy settings—public, private, or unlisted—control who can see a stream; they are not substitutes for protecting the credential. Check the actual secret-handling path on your VPS
Before deploying a key-handling method, assess it in the context of the operating system, service manager, FFmpeg build, and VPS provider you use. The official material cited here does not establish a preferred implementation, so do not assume that a particular storage location or delivery mechanism is safe without checking its documentation and behavior.

Could it be exposed during operation? Check whether your chosen method can reveal the value in logs, command output, process inspection, or diagnostic records.

Can you rotate it cleanly? Know where to replace the key and how to restart or reload the encoder after resetting it in Live Control Room.

What happens to copies? Review whether deployment bundles, backups, and support artifacts retain the key, and who can access those copies.

These are evaluation questions, not claims that a specific FFmpeg or VPS feature does—or does not—expose the secret. Confirm the answers for your own configuration before relying on it.

You think someone else has the key
Reset it in Live Control Room, update the key supplied to FFmpeg, and confirm the encoder reconnects with the new credential. Also review who has channel and VPS access, and remove unnecessary access using the controls available in those services.
FFmpeg cannot connect after a reset
Check that the encoder is using the newly generated key rather than a stale copy, and that the stream URL and key are in their corresponding settings. If your service loads configuration at startup, apply the replacement using the verified procedure for your service and restart or reload it as appropriate.
The stream is private or unlisted, but the key may be exposed
Audience visibility does not revoke a credential. Reset a potentially compromised key and update the encoder; use YouTube privacy settings separately for controlling who can watch.
