To loop a video to YouTube Live from an Indian VPS, install FFmpeg, obtain the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg with -re and -stream_loop -1. The loop option repeats the input; it does not restore a failed connection. Test the stream and configure a separate process supervisor and recovery plan before leaving it unattended.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VPS in an Indian region, with enough CPU, disk, and outbound transfer capacity for your chosen stream settings.
- FFmpeg and a video file you own or are authorized to stream.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key.
- A way to monitor YouTube stream health and restart or alert on a failed FFmpeg process.
There is no universal VPS size for this job. Copying compatible audio and video streams can use much less CPU than encoding the video continuously. For transcoding, test the exact source, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate on the intended host; do not assume a VPS advertised with a given number of CPUs can sustain your workload indefinitely.
Choose an Indian VPS region and plan
Documented India-region examples include DigitalOcean’s Bangalore datacenter (blr1) and Amazon Lightsail’s Mumbai region (ap-south-1). These are location examples, not endorsements of a particular plan. Check current availability and plan terms directly before provisioning.
| Provider example | Documented location | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | Bangalore, India (blr1) |
Current plan types, sustained CPU behavior, outbound transfer allowance and overage, disk space, console access, monitoring, support, and total cost. |
| Amazon Lightsail | Mumbai (ap-south-1) |
Current plan availability, transfer allowance and overage, CPU behavior, disk space, console access, monitoring, support, and total cost. AWS advises considering EC2 for consistently high-CPU workloads such as video encoding. |
An India region may be convenient for administration or audience geography, but the operational test that matters is whether the host can sustain outbound delivery to YouTube at your selected bitrate. A nearby region does not guarantee that. Confirm the provider’s current transfer limits and billing, especially for a continuous stream, before choosing a plan.

Install FFmpeg and inspect the video
Install from a trusted source
Use the package manager for your VPS distribution or an official FFmpeg build source. Package names and available versions vary by operating system, so follow the distribution’s current installation guidance rather than copying an unrelated repository command.
- Connect to the VPS using SSH.
- Install FFmpeg using the trusted package source appropriate to that Linux distribution.
- Run
ffmpeg -versionand confirm it returns the installed build and configuration.
Check the input file
Upload the video to a path on the VPS, then inspect it with ffprobe, which is normally distributed with FFmpeg:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i /path/to/video.mp4
Record the video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio channels, and duration. Confirm that the file contains the tracks you expect and plays correctly. Check available disk space for the source file and any files needed for your workflow.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown in that stream’s live settings. YouTube’s ingestion address and key are provided through the channel’s live configuration; do not rely on an old URL copied from another setup.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a screenshot, public script, repository, shared configuration, or support request. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
A command-line key can be exposed through shell history, process listings, or logs, depending on how it is launched and the host configuration. A protected environment or configuration file and a service manager can reduce casual exposure, but they do not remove the need to control file permissions and inspect logs carefully. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings.

This illustrative H.264/AAC command reads the file at its native playback rate, loops it indefinitely, encodes 1080p30 video at 5 Mbps, and sends it to an RTMPS endpoint. Replace the endpoint placeholder with YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL and stream key; never substitute a real key into a command you publish or share.

The 5M video bitrate is YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation for 1080p30; it is an encoder recommendation, not a guarantee about viewer experience or a benchmark of a particular VPS. YouTube lists 3 Mbps for H.264 720p30. Match frame size and frame rate to the source and your tested capacity rather than upscaling a low-resolution file just to use a higher bitrate.
In this command, -r 30 sets output frame rate, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), and the bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer size constrain the video encoder. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, with AAC or MP3 audio. This example uses H.264 and AAC; it is not a universal preset. YouTube recommends RTMPS, saying: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.”

Stream-copy only when the source is compatible
If the file’s codecs, container, timestamps, and output requirements are compatible with YouTube ingest, stream-copy can avoid video and audio re-encoding and reduce CPU use. Compatibility is not guaranteed by the filename extension. Test the actual file and inspect YouTube’s stream health before relying on a copy workflow. A basic copy-shaped command is:

Do not assume this produces YouTube’s recommended bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or compatible audio/video formats. Inspect the source and validate the resulting stream. If it fails compatibility checks or cannot meet the intended output settings, transcode instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start the loop and verify it in YouTube
- Run the selected FFmpeg command in a test session. Watch the terminal for input, encoder, and connection errors.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Check stream health and messages, and confirm that picture and audio are present and synchronized.
- Test representative motion and audio, not only a static opening frame. Verify the picture quality and that playback continues through the file’s end and into the next loop.
- Check that the VPS sustains the workload: CPU use for transcodes, network delivery, and available disk space. A stream that works for a short test may still fail under sustained load.
- Only after the test succeeds should you configure unattended operation, monitoring, and recovery.
YouTube’s encoder guidance and checks can change; consult its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when selecting output settings.

Keep it running: looping is not recovery
-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input without an end. -re reads file input at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when simulating a live feed from a file. FFmpeg cautions against applying low read rates to actual live or capture inputs because packet loss can result. These input options do not reconnect a failed YouTube RTMP(S) output.
Plan process supervision and output recovery separately. A service manager can restart FFmpeg after the process exits, while a FIFO muxer can be configured for output recovery after temporary failures. Neither should be treated as a guarantee of seamless continuity: YouTube reconnection behavior and stream health are separate concerns, and a restart may interrupt the live session. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP recovery example. HTTP input reconnect options documented for ffplay address HTTP input behavior, not a broken RTMP(S) output to YouTube.
For unattended operation, use a supervisor such as systemd or an equivalent, define restart behavior deliberately, retain logs with restricted access, and alert on process exits as well as YouTube stream-health problems. Validate the service after reboot and after a simulated failure. Avoid logging the stream key.
Copyright, channel rules, and stream length
Only stream material you own or have permission to use, including its music and any other embedded content. A continuous loop does not grant rights to copyrighted material, and a live stream can still receive claims or be interrupted. YouTube channel eligibility, live-stream restrictions, and duration behavior can depend on the account and current platform rules; check the Live Control Room and YouTube Help for your channel rather than assuming a universal limit or eligibility status.
