To show a radio station’s changing song title on a YouTube livestream, get the station’s now-playing metadata and display it in an OBS scene as a text or browser source. YouTube’s broadcast title is not a live-updating on-screen song label: the label has to be part of the video OBS sends to YouTube.
What you need before setting it up
The setup has two parts: a feed that provides the station’s current track information, and an OBS scene element that displays that information. The audio stream alone may not provide an easy, reliable way for an overlay to read the title.
- The station’s documented now-playing endpoint or another supported metadata feed.
- OBS Studio, with the radio audio included in the outgoing scene or stream setup.
- A way to pass the changing title into OBS: a browser overlay, a local helper that updates a text file, or a compatible plugin for a supported playback source.
Ask the station operator or hosting provider whether the stream uses Icecast, SHOUTcast, or a managed service, and request its supported now-playing feed. The exact endpoint and metadata format depend on the station.
Find the station’s current track metadata
For an Icecast station
Icecast documents a machine-readable /status-json.xsl endpoint. Open the station host’s endpoint in a browser or inspect it with a JSON viewer, then locate the active mount and check whether its metadata includes a current title or artist-and-title value. The precise fields and their availability depend on the station’s stream and configuration. Icecast Server Statistics documentation describes the endpoint and its fields; Icecast Admin Interface documentation covers administrative functions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Confirm that the title actually changes at a track boundary. If the endpoint is unavailable, private, or does not expose titles, ask the operator for an authorized feed or another supported way to access the metadata. You cannot reliably display information that the station does not provide.
For other station platforms
Request the provider’s documented now-playing API or feed rather than guessing at an endpoint. Avoid relying on a scraped human-facing status page: Icecast warns that its web interface is not an API and may change between versions. Its documentation says, “We strongly discourage attempts to scrape data from the web interface as we do not consider this an API and will change it, even completely, between versions!”

Choose how OBS will display the title
| Route | How it works | Best fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Browser overlay | A small overlay page periodically reads the station’s metadata feed and renders the current title; add the page as an OBS Browser Source. | Useful when the endpoint can be read by the page. Browser cross-origin restrictions (CORS) may block requests, in which case a local helper or server-side proxy may be necessary. |
| Local helper and text file | A helper polls the feed and writes the latest title to a local text file; an OBS text source reads that file. | Useful when browser access is blocked or you want the metadata-fetching step separate from the overlay. The helper and file must remain available while streaming. |
| OBS Tuna plugin | Tuna reads metadata from supported media sources and can display it in OBS. | Consider it if the radio audio is played through a supported source such as VLC or MPD in your setup. Its listing does not promise support for every arbitrary radio server URL. The listing specifies OBS 28.0.0 minimum and Windows/Linux support; confirm current compatibility before installing. OBS Tuna listing |
| Music on stream browser resource | A browser overlay resource lists support for services including YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Deezer, Pretzel, and Epidemic Sound. | Its listed title sources include YouTube chapters and description playlists; the listing does not establish that it can read an arbitrary radio station’s external metadata feed. Check that its source model matches your setup. Music on stream listing |
Set up the overlay in OBS
- Connect the metadata feed. For a browser overlay, configure the page to poll the station’s documented feed and show the active mount’s current title. For a text-file setup, configure a local helper to fetch the feed and update the file. The exact field path depends on the station’s JSON response, so verify it against the actual data rather than assuming a universal format.
- Handle access restrictions safely. If a browser page cannot fetch the feed because of CORS, use an authorized local helper or server-side proxy. Do not put private station credentials in a publicly accessible overlay URL. If the feed requires access the station has not authorized, ask the operator to provide a suitable endpoint.
- Add the display to the scene. In OBS, select the scene used for the broadcast, use the Sources + control, and add a Browser Source for an overlay page or a text source configured to read the helper’s file. Set the source dimensions or text appearance to suit the scene, then position and resize it in the preview.
- Check what viewers will see. Preview the outgoing scene and wait for a track change. Confirm that the displayed text updates, remains legible against the background, and does not cover important video. If you have a separate scene for the YouTube stream, verify that the source is present there too.
- Start the broadcast through your normal OBS and YouTube workflow. The overlay is in OBS’s outgoing picture. YouTube broadcast metadata and the video stream are linked but distinct resources; changing a broadcast title does not create this visual overlay. YouTube Live Broadcasts API documentation
Keep credentials and station controls separate
Icecast documents an administrative metadata-update function for station operators. It changes mountpoint metadata; it is not a public read endpoint for viewers or overlays. Do not expose administrative credentials in a browser source, public page, or client-side script. Use that function only with authorization and keep its credentials private.
Troubleshoot a missing or stale song title
- The endpoint does not load: Confirm the station’s software and the correct documented feed with its operator or host. The Icecast endpoint path applies to Icecast, not necessarily to other platforms.
- The JSON loads but has no title: Check that you are looking at the active mount and ask the station whether it publishes track metadata. Icecast does not guarantee every field will be present.
- The overlay works in a browser but not in OBS: Check the Browser Source URL and source visibility, then inspect whether the page depends on browser permissions or network access unavailable to OBS.
- The page cannot fetch the feed: A cross-origin restriction may be blocking the request. Use an authorized local helper or server-side proxy rather than disabling security or exposing credentials.
- The title never changes: First check whether the station’s feed itself changes at a track boundary. If it does, verify that the overlay is polling the correct mount and reading the current title field.
- The text is cut off or hard to read: Adjust the source dimensions, font size, wrapping, contrast, or placement in the OBS scene and preview the result before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that plays uploaded recordings around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and this does not add a radio station’s changing metadata to an OBS scene.
