Choose 60fps when smoother motion matters and your upload connection can reliably carry the bitrate for your resolution and codec; choose 30fps for relatively static content or when bandwidth is limited. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec, so there is no single bitrate that defines “30fps” or “60fps.” The figures below are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, retrieved in 2026—not guaranteed quality thresholds.
What changes between 30fps and 60fps?
At the same resolution, 60fps sends twice as many frames each second as 30fps. Those additional temporal samples can make fast motion—such as gameplay, sports or rapid camera movement—look smoother. For a talking head, a mostly static scene or a screen share with little motion, 30fps may be sufficient and can require less bitrate at some resolution-and-codec combinations.
That is a practical motion tradeoff, not a promise that 60fps will look better in every stream. YouTube’s encoder table recommends settings; it does not report a controlled visual-quality comparison or quantify how much better one frame rate looks at a fixed bitrate. Resolution, codec, scene complexity and the stability of your upload connection all matter.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate
The table shows YouTube’s published live-ingestion bitrate figures in Mbps. “Minimum” and “recommended” are the labels used in YouTube’s guidance; treat the recommended figure as a starting point for the stated codec and frame rate, not as a universal quality guarantee. YouTube groups AV1 and H.265/HEVC together in this table.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations as retrieved in 2026; the guidance page does not display a publication year. For example, at 1080p YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 30fps and 12 Mbps at 60fps, while its H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. At 720p, the listed recommendations are the same at both frame rates: 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. So “60fps always needs more bitrate” is too broad.
Use the row for your intended resolution, frame rate and encoder codec. The table’s minimums are not a reason to target a minimum when you want a stable stream: YouTube advises choosing settings reliable for your actual internet connection and testing them under representative conditions.

How to choose settings for a gaming stream
Pick frame rate for the motion
- Consider 60fps for fast gameplay, sports or frequent camera movement when smoother motion is important and your connection can sustain the matching bitrate.
- Consider 30fps for slower or mostly static content, or when a lower bitrate makes the stream more reliable. At 720p, YouTube’s listed recommendation does not increase from 30fps to 60fps for either codec.
Set resolution and codec before choosing bitrate
Frame rate alone does not determine the recommended bitrate. Decide your resolution and encoder codec, then use the corresponding live-ingestion recommendation in the table. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming, with frame rates up to 60fps. What your encoder can offer depends on its own capabilities and configuration.
Check the upload connection and run a realistic test
- Run an upload speed test on the connection you will use for the stream. Compare the available upload capacity with the bitrate for your selected live settings; do not assume a speed test result guarantees a stable stream throughout an event.
- Configure the encoder for CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Test before the event with movement and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and review any messages. If the connection is unstable, choose a setting that it can carry reliably rather than insisting on a higher frame rate or resolution.
Live bitrate is not the same as upload bitrate
Use YouTube’s live-ingestion table for a live stream. Its upload-encoding page is a separate guide for prerecorded video files: for example, it recommends 8 Mbps for SDR 1080p uploads at standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50 or 60fps). Those upload figures are not the live recommendations in the table above. YouTube recommends encoding an upload at the same frame rate at which it was recorded.

Your encoder bitrate is the incoming stream setting, not a promise that every viewer will receive playback at that bitrate. YouTube says it transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and network connections.
What 30fps versus 60fps does not decide
Frame rate and stream latency are separate settings considerations. YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and display and notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; frame rate itself does not determine latency. Choose a latency mode for how quickly you need audience interaction, and judge the frame-rate choice by motion, available bandwidth and a representative test.

Likewise, the bitrate recommendations do not establish that any particular camera, capture card, dedicated encoder, or networking upgrade is necessary. The appropriate setup depends on how your game video is captured and what your encoder supports.
