You can turn your own older gameplay recordings into a YouTube live channel by sending their playback through a streaming encoder connected to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasts, including gaming, but its guidance does not provide a dedicated setup for looping prerecorded files continuously. You supply and test that playback workflow yourself, and you need the rights to every part of the stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming start guidance and its encoder setup guidance.
- Gameplay recordings and any music, overlays, or other material you plan to include, with the necessary rights for livestreaming.
- An encoder workflow. YouTube lists encoders, including OBS, as an option for broadcasts such as gameplay. For prerecorded footage, you also need a playback source that feeds the video and audio into the encoder.
YouTube explains how to connect an encoder to a live stream; arranging a local file or playlist to play through it is an implementation choice, not a specific continuous-loop feature endorsed in its cited instructions. The exact playback controls depend on the software you choose.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Confirm livestream access. Check that the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction conditions. If this is the first time the channel has gone live, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and set up the event. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the stream setup and connection details.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. The stream URL tells the encoder where to send the broadcast; the stream key associates it with your YouTube stream. YouTube treats the key like a password, so do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Set up playback for your recordings. Choose a source that plays the files and routes both picture and sound into the encoder. If you want a sequence, arrange the files in the playback tool’s playlist or equivalent. Confirm that playback advances as intended; do not assume the YouTube event itself will loop your files. Avoid capturing another channel’s YouTube playback as a shortcut: that does not resolve rights or platform requirements.
- Configure the encoder for the output you intend to send. Check the encoder’s own guidance for the selected source and output settings. The cited YouTube pages establish the encoder connection workflow but do not prescribe settings for looping local files, or specific current OBS menu labels for this use.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Test in advance, start the encoder before the scheduled event, and check Live Control Room’s preview for picture and sound. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream quality; continue watching for playback interruptions, missing audio, or an unexpected end.
Check rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Check the rights for the gameplay recording, in-game music, separately added soundtrack, overlays, and third-party clips. Owning a game or having previously uploaded a recording does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast every element. YouTube identifies copyright restrictions as a reason an active stream may be stopped or restricted; see YouTube’s guidance on live-stream restrictions. When a game publisher’s policy or a music licence is unclear, get permission or remove the uncertain material before going live.

Choose a stream source that fits the job

Keep an archive of the stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy of a continuous channel: keep a local recording or a separate copy of the source files. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup; see Archive live streams. An external drive is one optional place to store source files or a local archive; YouTube does not require one.
