Test the computer’s encoding and internet upload before relying on it for a long session; a spare PC is not automatically capable of staying live around the clock.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s current guidance accessed October 3, 2026.
- A spare PC that can run OBS Studio while encoding your chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming performance.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate.
- Audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, plus a visual such as a station image. A radio-style stream still sends video; an audio-only feed by itself does not create a YouTube radio broadcast.
OBS is open-source software available at no charge and is listed by YouTube as an encoder. You do not need paid software for the basic PC setup.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming activation process if the channel has not streamed before. Allow for activation to take up to 24 hours.
- Install OBS Studio and configure it. Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its suggested settings as a starting point: encoding load varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
- Create a radio scene. In OBS, add a still image or another appropriate visual source to a scene. Add the audio input or playback source that carries your program. Watch the OBS audio meters while sound is playing; if there is no signal, select the correct device manually.
- Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings, or use YouTube integration if it is offered. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that broadcast.
- Test before going live. Run the scene for a few minutes with representative audio and movement. Check the audio meters, the upload capacity of the connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. For a static radio image, avoid adding unnecessary visual complexity that consumes spare PC resources.
- Start and end deliberately. Begin the broadcast from the workflow shown in OBS and YouTube Studio, then monitor it. When finished, stop the stream deliberately and check the archive in YouTube Studio.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube recommends choosing a quality level that is reliable on the available connection and checking upload capacity with a speed test. Its current encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 480p30. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or older PC can sustain them. Leave headroom for upload variation rather than setting a bitrate equal to the best speed-test result.

OBS’s wizard and a real test are more useful than copying a high-resolution preset onto an older machine. OBS notes that encoding load changes with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and that compatible system requirements do not guarantee the computer can stream or record successfully. The official OBS requirements and Quick Start pages are dated August 25, 2021; they are not performance tests of a particular PC.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. Its copyright guidance says it may replace the live image, warn the creator, interrupt the stream or terminate it. Use music and other program material you own or are authorized to broadcast. Buying a track, subscribing to a music service or having a local copy does not by itself establish live-stream rights.
If a rights holder has authorized your use but Content ID still affects the broadcast, ask the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says licensed material can still be interrupted when the channel has not been allowlisted.

Plan for long sessions, archives and failure
Keep the local setup dependable
A PC-based stream depends on the spare computer, its power and cooling, OBS, and the local internet connection remaining available. Test the full setup under the conditions you expect to use; the official guidance does not establish a universal PC model, CPU benchmark or minimum upload speed for a 24/7 radio stream. A wired connection may be a practical choice where available, but the cited YouTube guidance specifically calls for checking upload bitrate rather than prescribing Ethernet.
Know the stated archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived automatically; plan a separate recording or shorter broadcast sessions if keeping a replay matters.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No audio in OBS: Check that the intended input or playback source is in the scene, select the correct device manually, and confirm the audio meters move.
- OBS struggles or the stream stutters: Reduce resolution, frame rate, bitrate or scene complexity, then retest. An older PC may not sustain the Auto-Configuration Wizard’s initial choice.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Recheck the bitrate against actual upload performance and confirm the stream settings, keyframe interval and encoder configuration.
- OBS cannot connect to the broadcast: Verify that you copied the current stream URL and key from the intended YouTube Studio broadcast. If needed, generate a replacement key in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The stream is interrupted despite having music access: Check the rights for live broadcasting and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where appropriate.
When a spare PC is the right approach
OBS on an existing PC gives you direct control over the audio and visual mix and avoids paying for a service for the basic workflow. The trade-off is that the computer and home connection must stay on and working, and you have to configure and monitor the encoder yourself. Dedicated hardware and cloud streaming are other approaches for people seeking a more managed continuous setup, but a product listing or encoder compatibility list is not proof of uninterrupted operation.
