To switch music playlists during a YouTube live stream sent through OBS, keep the OBS encoder stream running and change the scene or media source that OBS is broadcasting. For a planned handoff, prepare the next playlist in a separate scene, preview it in Studio Mode if useful, then transition that scene to the live program. This changes the content OBS sends without requiring you to end the YouTube broadcast.
This guide is about playlists of media files played through OBS—not YouTube watch-page playlists, which are collections of videos. The steps apply to an OBS encoder setup.
Choose how to switch playlists
OBS offers two practical approaches. A single VLC Video source can hold a media playlist; separate scenes give you more control over preparing and handing off to the next playlist.

Set up a VLC playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to use its VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you want to broadcast. Open the source properties and add the media files to its playlist.
- Choose the source’s loop, shuffle, and visibility behavior settings to suit your use. Check the playlist and settings before going live.
- Test playback and any planned playlist change locally. Do not rely on an untested edit to an active playlist: the documented controls do not establish whether every current OBS version and operating system will preserve the item and position or reload the source.
Switch to another playlist without stopping the broadcast
- Create a second OBS scene for the next playlist. Add and configure its VLC Video source there, with the playlist you want to use.
- If you want to inspect the next scene before it reaches viewers, enable Studio Mode and prepare it in the preview. Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene before transitioning it to the live program.
- When ready, use the OBS scene transition controls to put the next scene on air. OBS keeps producing the encoder output while the program scene changes; the YouTube broadcast does not need to be ended for this handoff.
- Confirm that the new playlist is playing as expected. For a critical or unattended broadcast, rehearse the exact scenes, sources, and transition on the same system first.
What the handoff does—and does not—guarantee
The broadcast output and the media playing within OBS are different parts of the setup: YouTube receives the encoder stream, while OBS determines the program content sent through it. Changing the OBS scene can therefore change the music source without ending the live stream.

A scene transition is not a promise of a seamless audio crossfade. OBS’s documented playlist and transition features do not establish that VLC playlist items crossfade, nor do they guarantee that changing an active playlist will keep its playback position. Choose a transition and source arrangement that you have tested for the result you want.
Troubleshoot common switching problems
- VLC Video is unavailable in OBS: Install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The new playlist does not appear on air: Check that you transitioned to the intended scene and that its VLC Video source is visible. Review the source’s visibility behavior and playlist in its properties.
- Changing the active playlist restarts or disrupts playback: The documented controls do not guarantee that an active edit preserves playback position. Use a separately prepared scene for the next playlist and test the handoff on your installation.
- The switch is not a crossfade: A scene transition changes the live program, but OBS’s documented playlist controls do not promise an audio crossfade between VLC playlist items. Test the chosen transition and audio arrangement before the broadcast.
- The YouTube broadcast ends during a scene change: A scene change should be distinct from stopping the encoder output. Check that you have not stopped streaming in OBS and verify the stream status in YouTube Studio.
Keep music rights separate from the technical setup
A successful OBS switch only changes what is sent in the stream. It does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the tracks. Confirm that your music is licensed for livestream use; this guide does not determine the legal status of any particular track.
