For a prerecorded YouTube stream in India, the cheapest workable VM is not necessarily the lowest-priced one: estimate continuous outbound transfer first, then check the VM’s region, full bill and whether your video can stream without re-encoding. DigitalOcean’s published Basic Droplet options include a $4/month plan with 500 GiB of transfer and a $12/month plan with 2,000 GiB; those figures are provider-listed USD prices, not an India-specific total-cost or performance comparison. No available evidence establishes a universal best-performing Indian VM region or provider.
How to choose a low-cost VM for a 24/7 YouTube stream
Use this order: calculate the stream’s monthly data use, compare it with included outbound transfer and overage terms, then verify that the VM can run your actual streaming workflow. A low CPU price can become poor value if the plan’s transfer allowance is too small or the selected bitrate pushes you into excess charges.
1. Estimate outbound transfer from bitrate
A useful decimal estimate for a continuously running stream is: bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = GB per 30 days. This is a calculation from bitrate and runtime, before protocol overhead, not a provider allowance or measurement.
| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate transfer per 30 days |
|---|---|
| 2 Mbps | 648 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 1,296 GB |
For a more exact estimate, multiply bitrate in bits per second by seconds of runtime, then divide by 8 to get bytes; convert to decimal GB by dividing by 1,000,000,000. Add headroom for protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic. Compare like units: providers often specify transfer in GiB, where 1 GiB is 1.0737 decimal GB.

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. If you stream continuously at those rates, the same calculation gives about 3,240 GB and 3,888 GB per 30-day month respectively, before overhead. The bitrate you choose therefore affects the VM bill directly. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
2. Check the actual video workflow before paying for compute
If the prerecorded file already matches a format and stream configuration YouTube accepts, your workflow may send it without continuously re-encoding the video. That can reduce CPU demand. If you change its resolution, codec or bitrate, the encoder has to do more work. Multiple simultaneous outputs also add load. Test a representative file and monitor CPU, memory and stream health before committing to a VM size; the available evidence does not establish a universal minimum VM specification.
3. Compare the complete bill, not the headline price
Check the current outbound-transfer allowance and overage rate, the region where the VM is actually available, taxes, currency conversion, IPv4 charges and any other billed network or storage items. DigitalOcean’s quoted monthly prices are in USD and do not establish the total India-specific cost. Provider plans and locations can change, so confirm them at checkout.

DigitalOcean Basic Droplet: published low-cost reference points
DigitalOcean’s official pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists the following Basic Droplet configurations. These are provider-published specifications, not independent tests of streaming quality, latency or uptime. See DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.
| Plan | Published specification | What it means for a continuous stream |
|---|---|---|
| $4/month | 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer | The listed transfer is below the approximate 648 GB decimal needed by a 2 Mbps feed for 30 days, even before overhead. Check the provider’s current overage terms before considering this plan. |
| $12/month | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM, 50 GiB SSD, 2,000 GiB transfer | The larger allowance covers the approximate 648 GB or 1,296 GB decimal examples at 2 Mbps and 4 Mbps, respectively, before overhead. It is still below the 3,240 GB and 3,888 GB decimal estimates for continuous 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps feeds. |
Transfer accounting units and provider rules may differ, and these comparisons leave no room for overhead or other traffic. Confirm the current plan terms and calculate using your actual bitrate and schedule. The $12 tier’s 1 vCPU and 2 GiB RAM may be a candidate for a compatible passthrough workflow, but that is not a guarantee that a particular file, encoder or operating system will run reliably on it.
What to configure for YouTube ingestion
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the configuration reference rather than guessing at settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs, with AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264 it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; the selected resolution and frame rate should match the source and the capability of the complete workflow.

- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream key and ingestion details. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose ingestion securely. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use RTMPS where your streaming software and YouTube setup support it. The stream key goes in the encoder or playout software’s stream-key field; do not put it into a public command, screenshot or shared configuration.
- Match the output to the source. If the file is already compatible, avoid needless conversion. If encoding is required, choose a supported codec, resolution and frame rate, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and budget transfer at the configured bitrate.
- Run a representative test. YouTube Help also says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with the actual file or one with similar motion and audio, then check YouTube Studio’s stream health and the VM’s CPU, memory and network use.

India-specific region and network checks
A provider advertising a cloud region in or near India does not by itself prove that it offers the best route to YouTube’s ingestion servers for your viewers or stream. The available sources do not establish a provider with the best India-region performance, a best route from Indian networks, or comparative latency and reliability results.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm in the provider’s live control panel that your desired VM region is available to your account and plan.
- Run a test from the candidate VM to YouTube ingestion and inspect YouTube Studio’s stream health during representative operating periods.
- Check whether the measured route is stable enough for your stream; do not treat a single latency result as proof of long-term reliability.
- Recheck total costs in your billing context, including taxes, exchange rate, IPv4 and transfer overages.
When a managed playout service is a better fit
A VM gives you control over the operating system, encoder and scheduling, but you must provision it, maintain the streaming process and investigate failures. Managed cloud playout is a different trade-off for people who would rather not keep an encoder VM configured and supervised.

Common problems and practical fixes
- The stream stops after the transfer allowance is used. Compare actual bitrate and runtime with the plan’s included transfer; reduce bitrate only if the resulting quality suits the content, or choose a plan with adequate transfer. Check overage terms before the next billing period.
- The VM is overloaded or the stream drops frames. Check CPU and memory during a representative test. Confirm whether your workflow is re-encoding or producing multiple outputs; passthrough and encoding have different compute needs. Reduce unnecessary conversions or choose a larger VM if measurements show a resource bottleneck.
- YouTube reports poor stream health. Check the configured bitrate, encoder output and network stability. Confirm the keyframe interval is two seconds and no more than four seconds, and test the intended resolution and frame rate.
- YouTube does not receive the stream. Verify the correct ingestion address and stream key in both YouTube Studio and the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. Prefer RTMPS when supported.
- The bill is higher than the advertised VM rate. Inspect transfer overages, taxes, exchange-rate effects, IPv4, storage and region-specific charges in the provider’s billing details.
- The stream works in one test but not consistently. Repeat tests at representative times and monitor stream health rather than assuming a one-off successful connection proves a stable route or ongoing reliability.
Copyright and reused-content considerations
Technical ability to loop a prerecorded video does not grant the right to stream its music, footage or other material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before running a long playlist. Repeated or minimally changed material may raise reused-content questions for monetization; eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s policies and review, not on the VM or playout provider. For a pre-publication check, use the StreamNeo copyright safety checklist.
