For a prerecorded video broadcast on YouTube Live, encode the outgoing feed to YouTube’s live ingestion settings—not its separate settings for uploading a finished video. You need an encoder or cloud service that plays the file and sends it as a live stream. YouTube does not publish a separate live encoding profile just for prerecorded source material.
Which encoding requirements apply?
Use the live encoder recommendations for the stream YouTube receives. The source video may already be encoded, but the outgoing live feed still needs a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. YouTube’s upload encoding settings are for directly uploading a video file, not for configuring a live broadcast. The numbers can differ: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 live ingestion, while its upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p.
These are YouTube’s published recommendations; check its live encoder page before a critical event because settings can change. The reviewed help pages do not state publication or revision dates.
Recommended YouTube Live encoder settings
Codec, protocol and audio
- Video codecs: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. The applicable bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard workflow. HLS is a separate ingestion option with different requirements, not another name for RTMP.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps is listed for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible; YouTube says it must not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC.

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are the H.264 live-ingestion figures in YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not upload bitrates. Do not assume the same bitrate table applies to H.265 or AV1; use the current codec-specific guidance where applicable.
Picture format and HDR
YouTube’s encoder recommendations also specify square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit color; for HDR, YouTube lists 10-bit. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its page describes HLS as an alternative in relevant cases.

How to send a prerecorded video as a live stream
- Confirm channel eligibility and enable live streaming. YouTube’s general guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio because restrictions can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming start guidance.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling can let viewers find the event and set reminders, but it does not send the video by itself; an encoder feed is still needed at show time. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Choose an encoder that can play the file. Use software or a hardware encoder capable of feeding prerecorded video as a live output. YouTube supports both; a hardware encoder is optional, not a prerequisite.
- Configure the outgoing feed. Set the desired resolution and frame rate, choose a supported codec and protocol, then use the matching bitrate recommendation. For RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where possible, staying at or below four seconds. Ensure your sustained outbound capacity can handle the stream; YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload bandwidth headroom.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share or publish it.
- Preview and test before going public. Start the encoder, confirm the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room, and check stream health and any warnings. YouTube advises setting up in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Its instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube’s streaming preparation tips.
- Start the event and monitor it. Confirm the feed is stable before clicking Go live, then watch stream health and messages throughout the broadcast.
Do prerecorded streams need special encoding?
Not according to YouTube’s reviewed general live encoder guidance: it does not set out a special profile solely because the video was prerecorded. What matters for ingestion is the outgoing feed. If the encoder passes through a file without changing it, the final feed still needs to meet the receiving workflow’s supported settings; if it re-encodes, configure that output to match YouTube’s recommendations.
Also follow YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. Having a video file or permission to use one does not by itself guarantee that a live broadcast is allowed or eligible for monetization. Review the applicable rules in YouTube Studio and use content you have the rights to stream.

When HLS is appropriate
HLS is a distinct YouTube ingestion path, documented for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It requires a compatible encoder and its own transport and packaging rules: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. Because it transmits segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, HLS has higher latency. Do not apply these HLS rules to a standard RTMP/RTMPS setup. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide before choosing this workflow.
Troubleshooting common encoding problems
Live Control Room does not receive a signal
- Check that the encoder is running and using the server URL and stream key for the correct event.
- Confirm live streaming is enabled and the channel is eligible; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Video buffers, drops frames or stream health is poor
- Check actual outbound upload capacity, not just the internet plan’s advertised download speed. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate.
- Reduce output bitrate, resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen row; then test again.
- Check for unstable Wi-Fi or other uploads competing for bandwidth; use a more stable network connection where available.
Video looks wrong or YouTube reports encoding errors
- Verify that the codec, resolution and frame rate are supported and that the bitrate corresponds to that combination.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, confirm CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds if possible, never over four seconds.
- Check pixel shape, progressive scan and the other encoder parameters against YouTube’s listed settings. For HDR, verify the codec and ingestion path are appropriate.
Audio is missing or distorted
- Confirm the encoder is sending an audio track and is using AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- If sending 5.1 surround, use AAC; YouTube’s listed 5.1 support does not extend to MP3.
- Listen to the Control Room preview before going live and check the source file and encoder audio routing.
The stream ends but no archive is available
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but an archive should not be your only recording backup. Keep a local or otherwise independent copy of the source and any production recording you need.
