For a YouTube gaming stream encoded with FFmpeg, set the output to 1920×1080, use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR), and match the frame rate to your gameplay: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Set keyframes two seconds apart, use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and endpoint support it, and test the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before going live.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60
Pick the frame rate your game capture can actually sustain. Thirty frames per second is a sensible fit for a 30 fps source; choose 60 fps when the gameplay and encoding system can maintain it. Converting a lower-frame-rate source to 60 fps does not create additional captured motion, and the higher YouTube bitrate recommendation requires more upload capacity.

These are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations; the minimum bitrate is not a quality guarantee. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Set the FFmpeg output
Core video settings
Configure FFmpeg to produce 1920×1080 frames, H.264 video, the selected 30 or 60 fps rate, CBR at the corresponding recommended bitrate, and keyframes every two seconds. In FFmpeg terms, the keyframe spacing is generally expressed through GOP settings, but exact option syntax and accepted RTMPS URL formats can vary by FFmpeg build and ingest endpoint. The YouTube specifications establish the target settings, not one universal, tested command line; check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before copying a command.

Audio and advanced encoder recommendations
YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced recommendation for stereo is AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
YouTube’s advanced video recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Treat these as additional encoder guidance; the essential 1080p choices are resolution, frame rate, H.264 bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube safely
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration. YouTube explains that the key allows an encoder to send its feed to the stream: set up your encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in public examples, screenshots, shared logs, or shell history. If it is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- Use the RTMPS ingest URL where your FFmpeg build and the endpoint support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; its documentation also lists RTMP/RTMPS.
- Set the output to 1920×1080, choose 30 or 60 fps to match the captured game, then apply H.264, CBR, the matching bitrate target, and the two-second keyframe interval.
Check resolution detection and stream health
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you need to choose resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple playback formats, so your settings control the ingest; YouTube generates the viewer renditions. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
- Confirm your sustained upload capacity can carry the video and audio stream reliably. YouTube advises choosing a quality appropriate to the connection and running an upload speed test.
- Test using representative gameplay motion and audio, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- During the event, monitor stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. If you see dropped frames or unstable delivery, check connection capacity and encoding load rather than assuming that the resolution setting alone is the cause.

Troubleshoot common 1080p problems
The preview or playback does not show 1080p
- Check the encoder output: verify that FFmpeg is actually sending 1920×1080 rather than relying on a label or an input file’s dimensions.
- Check Live Control Room selection: automatic detection is the default. If you require manual resolution selection, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Allow for YouTube processing: YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for playback. Your ingest setting and available viewer renditions are related but are not the same thing.
The stream looks soft or breaks up during fast gameplay
- Confirm that the chosen bitrate matches your frame rate: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60 for H.264.
- Check whether the connection can sustain the full video-and-audio stream. A stated minimum bitrate is not a promise of acceptable quality for every game or network.
- Make sure the FFmpeg machine can encode the selected resolution and frame rate consistently. If it cannot sustain 60 fps, use a frame rate the capture and encoder can maintain.
Keyframe or ingest warnings appear
- Set keyframes two seconds apart; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation.
- Use CBR and select RTMPS when supported by your build and the selected ingest endpoint.
- Confirm the URL format against your FFmpeg version and the URL copied from Live Control Room; accepted formats can differ.
The stream will not connect, or someone else may have the key
- Recheck the stream URL and key copied from Live Control Room, and ensure the configured endpoint supports the protocol you selected.
- If the key was disclosed, have an authorized channel owner or manager reset it and update the encoder configuration.
