A UPS can keep a locally encoded livestream online through a brief power cut—but only if it backs up every essential device, including the modem or fiber ONT and router. After power returns, the computer and encoder may still need to restart or reconnect, so verify the feed from a viewer’s device rather than assuming a restored power light means the stream is live.
For prerecorded videos looping to YouTube, cloud playback is another option: it removes the home PC and home upload connection from the stream-generation path. Neither a UPS nor a cloud service can guarantee that YouTube or an upstream internet provider stays available.
What can keep the stream running?
First identify where the video is being encoded and sent to YouTube. If a computer or hardware encoder at home sends the stream, the power chain includes the encoder and the network equipment it depends on. If the video is prerecorded and looped by a cloud service, local power loss need not stop that cloud-generated feed, though platform or service interruptions remain possible.

For a camera-based production, the camera, audio chain, encoder, and network all need power and connectivity. A prerecorded loop has fewer local dependencies, but only if its playback and encoding are hosted away from home.

Prepare a local setup before the next outage
1. Inventory and measure the critical load
List the devices the stream actually needs: encoder PC or hardware encoder, modem or fiber ONT, router, and any locally required camera or audio equipment. Measure their real power draw rather than estimating from product categories. A UPS only backs up devices plugged into its battery-backed outlets; some outlets may provide surge protection only.
2. Choose a UPS by watts, VA, and runtime
Check both the UPS’s watt and VA limits against the connected load, then check its published runtime at that load against the time you want to bridge. A larger attached load reduces runtime. APC’s UPS buying guide advises that output watt capacity generally be 20–25% higher than the total draw of connected equipment; that is manufacturer selection guidance, not a universal standard. Compare models by usable runtime at your measured load, battery replacement policy, outlet types, monitoring or automatic-shutdown support, and compatibility with the encoder’s power supply—not by the advertised VA number alone. Plug only essential devices into battery-backed outlets. A monitor or other nonessential peripheral can use runtime the router or encoder may need. Follow the UPS maker’s instructions for installation, load limits, and battery care.
3. Set up restart behavior
Power returning to the UPS and the encoder computer turning back on are separate events. APC says the UPS resumes online operation when adequate power returns, but a computer may not start by default; where supported, enable the BIOS/UEFI option commonly labeled “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Power Recovery,” or similar. The exact label and availability vary by computer. APC Canada’s power-restoration FAQ was last modified March 20, 2025.

4. Rehearse recovery safely
Run a supervised drill before depending on the setup: verify UPS behavior, modem and router recovery, encoder startup, reconnection to YouTube, and playback from another device. Do not interrupt power casually while children are on camera or while equipment is writing data. Keep a responsible adult aware of the stream and its surroundings.
Restore the feed after power returns
- Check stable utility power and the UPS. Confirm it is back in normal operation. If its battery was exhausted, allow it to recharge before counting on full runtime; battery age and recent discharge can reduce available runtime.
- Restore the network path. Check modem/ONT and router status, then confirm the internet connection is back. If local devices appear healthy but YouTube reports errors, investigate outbound connectivity or contact the ISP.
- Confirm the encoder is running. Start it manually if it did not launch. Check the configured YouTube server URL and stream key if the encoder requires them. YouTube’s encoder setup uses the Live Control Room server URL and stream key; treat the key as a credential and do not share it publicly. YouTube encoder setup.
- Inspect YouTube Live Control Room. Look for stream-health warnings and ingest errors. YouTube identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as expected formats for proper ingest. YouTube live encoder settings and troubleshooting.
- Verify the viewer experience. From a separate device or connection, confirm that the live video and audio play before announcing that the stream is back. A sending encoder, functioning home network, and healthy platform playback are separate checks.
- Keep the safety plan in place. If the stream remains unavailable, communicate the interruption through an appropriate channel. Do not evade a YouTube restriction by switching to another channel; YouTube warns that this can be treated as circumvention.
Protect children as part of the recovery plan
Uptime is not the only operational concern for a child-directed stream. Keep personal details and location clues out of the picture and audio—including names, school details, house numbers, and identifying backgrounds. Make sure a parent or trusted adult is aware and nearby, and moderate chat where available.

YouTube’s guidance says livestreams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. Live chat is disabled for a Made for Kids stream.
