A phone or tablet can let you watch a YouTube livestream away from your computer, but seeing the feed is not the same as supervising a child. YouTube’s guidance says, “Always have an adult nearby or aware.” For a stream that runs around the clock, arrange responsible adult coverage for every shift—and reconsider broadcasting if nobody can respond.
What remote monitoring can—and cannot—do
Open the stream on a phone or tablet and you can use it as a second screen while away from the computer. YouTube supports watching streams on mobile devices. That gives you a way to view the feed; it does not establish that your device will alert you to a problem, detect danger, or let you intervene promptly.
Make the supervision plan first, then treat remote viewing as an extra check. UK government guidance notes that live broadcasts are harder to monitor because they happen in real time. Ofcom also identifies livestreaming’s real-time nature as a risk factor, and its 2026 audit found that safety tools could be skipped during setup. A live feed cannot be reviewed in full before viewers see it.
Check the child’s age and YouTube’s current rules
YouTube’s help guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says livestreamers must be at least 16. It also says streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled or access to features restricted. If a minor participates on an adult-owned account, YouTube says an adult must be visibly present. Check YouTube’s current rules and the account’s eligibility before setting up a broadcast; platform policies can change.

Review the audience designation, privacy and embedding settings, and chat configuration before going live. YouTube’s Made for Kids designation disables live chat and live chat replay, among other features, so account for that when deciding how the broadcast will work. If chat is enabled and appropriate, YouTube advises considering a trusted adult moderator to help filter unwanted chats.
Set up a practical monitoring plan
- Test mobile viewing. Put the official stream link on a phone or tablet. Open the live feed while away from the computer and confirm that you can see it. This tests viewing access only; do not assume it verifies alerts or supervision.
- Name the responsible adult. Decide who will be nearby or aware of the stream for its entire duration. For an overnight or continuous broadcast, make a schedule with a named adult responsible for each period. This handoff is a practical planning step, not a YouTube feature.
- Agree on how to stop the stream. Identify who can end the broadcast and how that person can be contacted. Test the procedure before relying on it. Do not depend on an unverified notification feature.
- Check the frame and conversation for identifying details. YouTube advises against sharing a child’s name, age, home address, school, or phone number. Check the background for details such as house numbers and street signs, and keep identifying information out of conversation.
- Set audience and interaction controls. Review privacy, embedding, audience, and chat settings with a trusted adult. If chat is enabled and appropriate, appoint a trusted adult moderator and agree how to handle concerning interactions. For a Made for Kids designation, chat features are disabled.
- Confirm adult coverage before each handoff. Make sure the next responsible adult knows when coverage begins and how to stop the stream. If nobody can maintain adult coverage, reconsider running the broadcast.
Is a separate tablet necessary?
No. A phone or tablet can serve as an optional second screen because YouTube supports watching streams on mobile devices; the available guidance does not establish that you need a separate device, recommend a particular model, or show that tablets provide special livestream-safety alerts.
