How to Create a 24/7 YouTube Livestream from a Folder of Children’s Videos

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube won’t stream a folder on its own: an encoder must turn the videos into a continuous feed and send it to a live event in YouTube Studio. Before starting, confirm your channel can livestream, you have rights to every video and soundtrack, and your encoder can loop the files. Plan a separate local recording if you need an archive: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

What you need before you start

  • A ready YouTube channel: YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements say a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check the current requirements in YouTube Help before scheduling; eligibility rules can change.
  • An encoder with media-playback or playlist controls: It must be able to play the videos in sequence, repeat them, and send the output to YouTube. A folder on your computer is not itself a stream source. The precise folder-watching and looping controls vary by encoder; verify them in that encoder’s current documentation. The YouTube encoder instructions establish the ingest process, but do not specify a universal folder-loop recipe.
  • Reliable upload capacity and power: For a local setup, the computer, encoder, internet connection, and power must remain available. A brief network interruption can break the outgoing stream, so have a monitoring and recovery plan.
  • A backup plan if the stream must be saved: Use a separate local recording and check that its file is growing. YouTube’s automatic archive is not a dependable backup for a 24/7 broadcast.

Check the videos, audience setting, and rights

Confirm permission for every part of the stream

Before uploading or broadcasting, check that you own or have permission to livestream every video, image, and audio track, including background music. A video being available to you does not establish that you have live-streaming rights to it. YouTube identifies copyright strikes and matches to copyrighted live broadcasts as reasons access to live streaming can be restricted. The rights attached to your particular files depend on their licenses and ownership.

Set the audience based on the content

Choose the audience setting accurately in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Do not label a stream made for children solely because children appear in the videos; consider the intended audience and the content as a whole. Conversely, a compilation intended for children should not be labeled otherwise to retain features. YouTube lists live chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications as disabled for made-for-kids live streams. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. Use the current Live Control Room for the audience setting; YouTube’s help guidance says the setting cannot be made with Classic live streaming tools.

If children appear on camera in a live feed, separate rules for minors on camera may apply. A stream made from prerecorded videos is not the same as a camera broadcast, but check YouTube’s current rules for the material and people involved.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the folder loop and YouTube event

  1. Prepare and test the playlist in your encoder. Add the files in the intended order using the encoder’s supported media or playlist controls, enable repeat or loop if available, and test that playback moves from the last item back to the first. Confirm that audio and video continue through file transitions. Since folder looping is encoder-specific, consult that product’s current instructions rather than assuming that adding a directory will loop it automatically.
  2. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live event. Set its title, privacy, and audience details for the actual program.
  3. Copy the ingest details into the encoder. In the event’s stream settings, copy YouTube’s server or stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: don’t publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Wait for YouTube’s preview and inspect it. Check that the expected video and audio arrive, the picture is stable, and the playlist is advancing. Review the stream-health status before sending the event live.
  5. Start the encoder output and go live. Follow the event’s Live Control Room prompts to begin the broadcast. Confirm the public event is actually live, not merely receiving a preview.

Choose encoder settings the connection can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 frames per second, YouTube’s table recommends 10 Mbps. That is a recommendation for that specific resolution and frame rate, not a promise that every internet connection can sustain it. For another resolution or frame rate, use the corresponding row in YouTube’s current encoder table rather than extrapolating from the 1080p30 figure.

Choose a bitrate below what your upload connection can reliably maintain, not merely its advertised peak. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20%. Test with similar motion and audio to the real playlist; a static menu screen is not a useful test for a video stream with frequent movement.

Monitor the stream and protect the archive

Check the connection during a test

Run a test before the intended audience arrives. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen for audio gaps or clipping, and confirm the encoder moves through the playlist and loops as expected. For a local encoder, keep the computer awake and prevent planned restarts or updates from interrupting the session. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; continuous operation therefore needs monitoring or a separately configured recovery plan.

Record locally if the archive matters

YouTube Help’s archive guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a separate local recording if you need a copy, and periodically verify that the recording file is increasing in size. Storage needs depend on the encoded bitrate and how long you retain recordings; an external drive is one possible way to add capacity, not a requirement for sending the stream.

One continuous event best fits an always-on presentation but carries the archive and DVR limitations above. Shorter sessions may make automatic archiving more predictable under YouTube’s stated threshold, but how ending and restarting affects your viewers depends on your channel and event setup.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube never shows a preview: Check that the event is open, the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, and the encoder is actually sending. Re-copy the ingest details if needed; don’t post the key while asking for help.
  • The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Reduce the encoder bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that your upload line can sustain. Check the connection under load and preserve the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
  • The stream stops at a file boundary: Test the playlist transition with the encoder’s own playback controls. Confirm each file is readable and the encoder’s repeat behavior is configured; a folder by itself does not guarantee gapless playback.
  • The stream ends after a computer restart, sleep, or power loss: A local encoder depends on the host computer and home connection staying available. Prevent sleep and scheduled shutdowns, monitor the machine, and prepare a recovery procedure for interruptions.
  • The broadcast has a copyright restriction or live access is limited: Recheck rights for all video and audio, then review the channel’s live-streaming status in YouTube Studio. A rights claim cannot be cleared just by changing the playlist order.
  • There is no usable YouTube replay: A 24/7 stream may exceed YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Check the local recording and file growth instead of assuming YouTube saved the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you don’t want a computer or home internet connection to keep the broadcast alive, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Costs and practical trade-offs

A DIY stream may not require a new purchase if you already have a suitable computer, connection, encoder, and enough recording storage. Its ongoing cost is the power, bandwidth, and time needed to keep the local setup available and monitored. The appropriate recording-drive capacity depends on your bitrate and retention period; there is no single capacity that fits every playlist or archive plan. A cloud service moves the continuous encoding and hosting away from the home computer, but check its supported inputs and storage limits against your specific folder and video sizes before relying on it.
