If the streams were available for different numbers of hours, report both total ad revenue and your own calculation of ad revenue per stream-hour. Label recent figures as estimates: YouTube adjusts estimated revenue after one week and again in the middle of the following month.
Use the right revenue metric
For a comparison specifically about advertising, use Estimated ad revenue, not the broader Estimated revenue figure. YouTube’s broader estimate can include revenue from YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers as well as ads. YouTube explains these Analytics metrics.
Do not treat CPM as creator earnings. CPM is the advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions; playback-based CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks that included an ad. Neither is the amount the creator receives. RPM is a creator-facing revenue-per-1,000-views metric after revenue share, but it can include non-ad sources, so it is not a substitute for Estimated ad revenue when comparing ad earnings.
Views, ad impressions, and monetized playbacks are different
A public view does not necessarily include an ad. Estimated monetized playbacks count playbacks with at least one ad impression, while ad impressions count individual ads. Ads may not appear for reasons including ad settings, advertiser suitability, available ads, and audience or geographic factors. Use these measures to help explain a revenue difference, not as interchangeable counts.

Build a like-for-like comparison in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics. Choose one date range that covers both streams. The Revenue tab can show earnings at channel or video level.
- Open Advanced Mode and compare the two videos, or comparable groups if that is how you organize the streams. Select the same dates and matching content scope for each side. Advanced Mode supports comparisons, metric selection, and report export; see YouTube’s Advanced Mode guidance and its Analytics overview.
- Choose Estimated ad revenue as the main result. Add views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, and watch time where available so you can see whether different audience size or ad delivery may help explain the totals.
- Match live and replay treatment. Decide whether you are comparing live broadcasts only, replays only, or both together, then apply that same scope to each stream. YouTube documents a Live filter for separating ad revenue from live streams and live replays in its live-stream monetization guidance.
- Export and preserve the comparison details. Keep the selected dates, time zone where relevant, content scope, metrics, and whether the values are estimates with the exported report or your written comparison. This makes the result reproducible if the estimates later change.
Report both total revenue and revenue per available hour
The total answers which stream generated more ad revenue during the chosen period. But a total alone can mislead if one stream was available much longer. For each stream, calculate:
Estimated ad revenue ÷ hours available = ad revenue per stream-hour

Call this an analytical normalization such as “ad revenue per stream-hour”; it is not a standard YouTube Analytics metric. Define “hours available” consistently—for example, the number of hours each stream was actually live during the selected dates. If a stream stopped or was offline, do not count those unavailable hours as if it had been running.

Account for live ad delivery and replay revenue
Live streams can earn from pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads when monetization is enabled, but a scheduled or inserted ad slot does not guarantee that an ad will serve. YouTube states that “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” For that reason, do not estimate revenue by counting planned mid-rolls or assuming every viewer received an ad.

Embedded live streams with autoplay on an external site have ads turned off, according to YouTube’s live monetization guidance. If one stream’s audience watched mainly through an embedded player and the other’s did not, that context may matter when interpreting the comparison.
Label estimates and compare mature periods
Estimated revenue can change because of invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, and certain ad campaign types. YouTube says adjustments occur after one week and in the middle of the following month, when earnings are finalized. Mark recent numbers as estimates and, where practical, compare periods at the same stage of adjustment. YouTube describes estimated-revenue adjustments.

Finalized earnings appear in Analytics after payments are added to AdSense for YouTube, typically between the 7th and 12th day of the following month, according to YouTube Analytics guidance. Note the status and period you used rather than presenting an estimate as a final payment amount.

- Using public view counts to infer earnings: public views do not reveal monetized playbacks, ad impressions, or private creator revenue. Use the owner’s Studio Analytics data.
- Comparing CPM with creator take-home revenue: CPM measures advertiser cost, not creator receipts; use Estimated ad revenue for this question.
- Comparing different windows: different dates, time zones, or live/replay scope make the totals less meaningful. Match them before interpreting results.
- Ignoring availability time: when one stream ran longer, show the total and the explicitly calculated per-hour figure rather than relying on either alone.
- Assuming every ad opportunity served: ad slots are not guaranteed to receive ads, so planned breaks cannot stand in for Analytics results.
- Treating an estimate as settled: revenue may be adjusted after one week and mid-following month; mark the data’s estimate or finalized status.
