The filter changes pixels in the video, so FFmpeg must re-encode the video; YouTube’s stream settings—codec, bitrate, keyframes and stream key—are a separate part of the setup.
What you need before building the ticker
- An FFmpeg build with the
drawtextfilter and its font dependencies available. - A font file on the host, or a working font configuration. Do not assume every packaged FFmpeg build includes the same capabilities.
- The input video and audio, the target output resolution and frame rate, and the YouTube Live stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- A preview-and-monitoring plan. A continuous stream needs operational recovery beyond the filter itself.
Check the installed binary’s filter list with ffmpeg -filters and confirm that drawtext is present. Consult the installed build’s FFmpeg documentation and verify the font path locally. The official FFmpeg Filters Documentation describes drawtext as drawing text from a string or file over video using the libfreetype library.
Build and animate the ticker
1. Choose the ticker copy workflow
For a fixed message, use text=. It is direct, but punctuation and shell metacharacters can make quoting cumbersome. For text that may change while FFmpeg runs, use textfile= with reload=; FFmpeg rereads the file at the configured frame interval. The file should be UTF-8. Replace it atomically—write a complete new file and rename it over the old one—so FFmpeg does not read a partially written update. The reload interval affects how quickly a change appears.
2. Add a background band and moving text
A practical pattern is to draw a semi-transparent band near the bottom of the frame, then render text over it. This illustrative filter fragment assumes a 64-pixel band and 32-pixel text; those are starting values, not universal recommendations:

drawbox=x=0:y=h-64:w=w:h=64:[email protected]:t=fill,drawtext=fontfile=/path/to/font.ttf:textfile=/path/to/ticker.txt:reload=1:fontsize=32:fontcolor=white:y=h-48:x=w-mod(t*180,w+text_w)Replace the font and text-file paths. The x expression uses elapsed time to move text left; w starts it at the right edge, while text_w represents the rendered text width. The modulo wraps the text for repeated scrolling. Its period and spacing affect the gap before the next pass, so tune them deliberately if you need a particular dwell or seamless loop. FFmpeg expression syntax, escaping, and available text-width expressions can vary with build and shell; validate the complete filter against the installed version.
There is no official universal ticker speed, font size, placement or band height. Preview at the actual output resolution and check legibility on representative playback devices. If the message is static, omit the movement expression and use a fixed x position.

3. Put the filter into the FFmpeg video chain
Apply the filter to the video input in your full FFmpeg command, then map audio and video deliberately. Because the ticker changes video pixels, the video cannot be sent with stream copy (-c:v copy); it has to be encoded again. Select a video encoder and bitrate supported by your machine and network, and preserve or explicitly configure the audio mapping and codec. The fragment above is only the filter, not a tested end-to-end command: input selection, encoding, audio, output URL, shell quoting and stream configuration depend on your setup.
Configure the YouTube Live ingest separately
Get the stream URL and key
Prepare the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and use its stream URL and key in FFmpeg’s output configuration. YouTube describes the key as the information that tells an encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it; treat it as a credential. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs or articles. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Match encoder settings to the chosen output
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the row for your actual configuration in the current encoder settings and bitrate tables. For one specific example, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30; that figure does not apply automatically to other configurations.
Test before starting the event
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, inspecting the preview and monitoring stream health and messages. Its streaming tips recommend 20% upload bandwidth headroom and enough total outbound capacity for primary and backup streams if you use them. These are configuration recommendations, not guarantees of successful delivery.

- Prepare the event and ingest details in Live Control Room.
- Start FFmpeg with the intended ticker, representative video motion and audio.
- Wait for the YouTube preview. Check ticker position, movement, legibility, audio and stream-health messages.
- Start the event only after the preview and health indicators look correct.
- For a continuous feed, monitor FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health, and arrange host-level recovery for process or connection failures. The filter documentation does not prescribe a process supervisor; choose one suitable for your host.
Troubleshoot common ticker and ingest failures
