How to Install OBS on Linode for an Always-On YouTube Stream

A Linode can host OBS for YouTube Live, but installation alone does not make a stream always-on. Configure a graphical session, secure the VM, match YouTube’s encoder guidance, and test recovery before relying on it.

You can install OBS Studio on a Linode Linux virtual machine and use it to send a continuous broadcast to YouTube Live, but a Linode is not a ready-made OBS desktop. OBS on Linux requires a graphical session, and the official documentation reviewed here does not provide a complete, verified recipe for keeping that session and OBS running headlessly across disconnects and reboots. Treat persistence as a separate design and testing requirement—not as a guaranteed result of installing OBS.

What you are building—and what “always-on” requires

A Linode is a virtual machine where you choose a Linux distribution and configure the software you need. OBS runs in that Linux environment, encodes your scenes or media, and sends the output to YouTube Live. Akamai describes Linodes as virtual machines running on its infrastructure (Akamai Linodes documentation).

For this to count as always-on, more than the initial connection must work. OBS needs a usable graphical environment; the process must remain alive when you disconnect from SSH; and the stream must recover or be restarted after interruptions and reboots. The official material cited here does not specify a supported persistent remote desktop, virtual display, OBS autostart, or process-supervision setup for a headless Linode. You will need to choose and validate those pieces separately.

Decide whether a Linode is the right host

A cloud VM can keep the encoding computer away from your home, but it brings Linux administration and a remote graphical session into the setup. Compare it with a dedicated local computer that stays powered on: the VM avoids relying on that computer and its home network, while a local machine may be simpler if you already have a stable OBS desktop setup. Either option needs sufficient encoding capacity, dependable outbound connectivity, and a recovery plan.

Do not assume a standard plan will encode every scene or output profile. OBS says Linux requires OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland, and warns that meeting basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).

Choosing Linode compute

Akamai’s plan guidance describes Accelerated plans as optimized for video processing and lists live streaming as a use case. The same page currently notes VPU capacity is temporarily full across regions and lists a starting figure of $280/month ($0.42/hour); availability and price are volatile, so check the current listing rather than treating that as a quote (Akamai plan guidance). Akamai also offers GPU Linodes for workloads such as video encoding. Its page lists RTX PRO 6000 starting at $1,665/month ($2.50/hour), with model and regional availability varying; that is not evidence that a GPU is necessary for a simple stream (GPU Linodes).

Before selecting a plan, compare the actual workload and current regional availability. Consider whether you will use CPU encoding or a compatible hardware encoder and drivers, scene complexity, resolution and frame rate, expected operating hours and recurring host cost, outbound bandwidth and transfer terms, latency to YouTube ingest, and how you will maintain the graphical session and restart OBS.

Create and secure the Linode

  1. Create the VM: In Akamai Cloud Manager, CLI, or API, deploy a Linode with a Linux distribution supported by the software you intend to install. Choose a region and plan based on availability and the workload; those choices and prices can vary by region. See Akamai’s Linode documentation.
  2. Set up SSH access: Configure access for administration and avoid using the root account for routine work. Akamai’s setup guide recommends a limited user and SSH hardening; root has unlimited privileges. Follow its current instructions for account and access configuration (Set up and secure a Linode).
  3. Apply basic security hygiene: Update the operating system, configure a local firewall, and do not expose SSH or any remote desktop service without access controls. Keep only the ports and access paths your setup requires.
  4. Plan the GUI before installing OBS: Choose how you will provide X11 or Wayland and how you will reconnect to the same persistent graphical session. Confirm that the approach supports OBS and survives SSH disconnection and reboot. The sources here do not validate a particular remote-desktop or virtual-display configuration.

Install OBS Studio for your distribution

OBS’s official Linux installation guide, dated August 26, 2021, recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu. For Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, it provides these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt install obs-studio

Check the current OBS installation guide and your distribution’s package instructions before running these commands; the guide is dated and repository compatibility can change. For a non-Ubuntu distribution, follow the guide’s Flathub recommendation and confirm the package and runtime requirements for your release (OBS Linux installation).

These package commands install OBS; they do not establish a persistent desktop or automatic recovery. Once installed, launch OBS inside the graphical environment you selected and verify it can access the sources, audio devices or files, and encoder you intend to use.

Configure YouTube Live and OBS

  1. Prepare YouTube Live: Open YouTube Live Control Room, set up the stream, and obtain its stream key and ingest information. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, or messages. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect using the available account or stream-key workflow. If entering a key manually, copy it only into OBS.
  2. Use a secure ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Select it where the YouTube/OBS configuration offers the option (YouTube encoder settings).
  3. Choose output to match your target: Set the video encoder, resolution, and frame rate in OBS to the profile you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s current guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps; not every encoder or host will support every combination. The recommended H.264 bitrate examples below are YouTube guidance, not a guarantee of Linode capacity.
  4. Set rate control and keyframes: Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use the current YouTube table for the exact codec and output mode rather than transferring a bitrate from a different profile.
  5. Set audio deliberately: For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps, supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Match OBS’s audio format and bitrate to the stream you intend to send.
H.264 output profile YouTube-recommended encoder bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates in guidance accessed in 2026, not a bandwidth guarantee from Akamai. Leave headroom on the actual outbound connection and test the route to YouTube ingest; YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and checking stream health.

Test continuity before calling it always-on

  1. Run a representative test: Use the real scene or playlist, with representative motion and audio. OBS recommends testing before a first live stream; YouTube also advises testing representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health (OBS Studio overview; YouTube encoder settings).
  2. Check the live ingest: Confirm that YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream and that the picture and audio are as expected. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, and YouTube warnings rather than assuming a successful OBS connection means a healthy broadcast.
  3. Disconnect SSH: Close your administration session and verify that OBS and the stream continue in the chosen graphical setup. Reconnect and inspect the same session.
  4. Test interruption and recovery: Test a brief network interruption and verify what happens when YouTube drops the connection. Confirm whether your chosen supervision method restarts or reconnects OBS; the sources cited here do not provide that configuration.
  5. Reboot the VM: After a planned reboot, verify that the graphical session, OBS, media, and stream return as intended. Do this before relying on the setup unattended.
  6. Monitor the running stream: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the VM’s resource and network behavior during the actual workload. Repeat the test after changing scenes, encoder, resolution, frame rate, or host plan.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS will not launch or shows a display error: The VM may lack a working X11 or Wayland graphical session, or the session may not provide the required OpenGL support. Confirm the GUI is active and meets OBS’s Linux requirements before changing encoder settings.
  • OBS stops when you close SSH: The process may be tied to a non-persistent login or graphical session. Use a persistent session design that you have verified, then repeat the disconnect test; the official sources here do not specify a supported recipe.
  • Stream health reports dropped frames: Check outbound network stability and available bandwidth, then compare the selected bitrate with the actual ingest path. Lowering output demands may help, but re-test with representative content and inspect YouTube’s health feedback.
  • Encoder overload or stuttering video: Compare CPU or GPU use with the scene complexity, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Reduce workload or choose suitable compute only after checking encoder compatibility and current plan availability.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream is active in Live Control Room, the selected ingest is correct, and the OBS key has not been mistyped, revoked, or replaced. Keep the key private when correcting it.
  • The stream fails after a reboot or dropped connection: Determine which component failed—the host, graphical session, OBS process, or YouTube ingest—and verify that your chosen recovery mechanism handles that failure. A successful initial launch does not prove automatic restart or reconnection.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

A technically continuous broadcast is not automatically permitted content or monetizable content. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before building a long-running channel around repeated material. A stream key and a successful encoder connection do not grant rights to the content.
