You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a modest PC with OBS, but the computer, internet connection and power supply must stay available, and the PC must be able to encode your chosen settings reliably. Start with 720p at 30 frames per second, use YouTube’s recommended 3 Mbps H.264 video bitrate, and test a representative stream before going public. This guide covers the local setup, India-specific practical checks, YouTube settings and the option of cloud playout for prerecorded videos.
Before you start: confirm the channel can go live
Your YouTube channel must be verified and not subject to an applicable live-streaming restriction. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until the day you plan to start. YouTube explains eligibility and setup in its live-streaming guidance.
- Sign in to the intended YouTube channel and confirm live streaming is enabled.
- Install OBS Studio from its official download page. YouTube lists OBS among its encoder options.
- Prepare the video, audio and scene you actually intend to broadcast. A simple static or looping scene is less demanding than a scene with multiple animated or browser sources.
- Check that your planned videos and audio are original or properly licensed for continuous live use.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule the stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or a custom service as appropriate, and enter the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. The labels can vary slightly with the OBS version and connection method.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screen capture, publish it, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose a conservative output. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution and frame rate. For an initial low-power PC test, use 1280×720 at 30 fps. In Settings → Output, select H.264 if available and set the video bitrate to 3,000 Kbps.
- Set the transmission options. In the streaming output settings, use CBR (constant bitrate) and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS when your encoder offers it, and says the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds. OBS’s exact labels depend on the selected output mode and encoder.
- Start a test stream. Start streaming from OBS while the YouTube stream is private or unlisted. Check the picture, audio, YouTube stream-health messages, and OBS statistics for dropped frames or encoding lag.
- Go public only after a sustained test. Test the same media, scene, audio and approximate run duration you intend to use. If the stream remains stable and both the PC and connection have headroom, you can trial a higher resolution or frame rate before relying on it continuously.
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations are encoder bitrates, not promises about what a particular PC or Indian broadband connection can sustain:

These figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. The stream bitrate is only part of what your connection carries. Leave upload headroom for bitrate variation and other household traffic, check upload capacity at the place and time you will stream, and validate it with an actual sustained broadcast. A short speed-test result alone cannot establish that the connection will remain steady overnight.

Make the workload manageable on a low-power PC
There is no single minimum CPU specification that guarantees a 24/7 OBS stream. The load depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, scene and other work running on the machine. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not prove a computer can stream adequately.
- Reduce resolution or frame rate first. If the PC struggles, try 720p30 or a lower output resolution before upgrading hardware. Reducing output resolution and frame rate can ease encoding and rendering pressure.
- Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays and filters. Keep only the sources the broadcast needs.
- Consider hardware encoding if supported. A compatible GPU or other hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding work. It does not remove the work of composing the scene, and older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate.
- Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Then test the actual stream. No wizard result can substitute for a sustained test of your own PC, media and connection.
Keep the PC’s power and cooling conditions consistent with the test. A local setup also depends on the home connection and electricity remaining available; it cannot keep sending video if the PC loses power or internet access.

Plan for continuous operation and YouTube archives
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete replay. If a complete archive matters, plan the broadcast and recording workflow around YouTube’s archive limit rather than expecting one continuous session to be preserved in full.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents continuous broadcasts as an ongoing broadcast resource, including a use case where a separate interview broadcast can be created from part of a continuous feed without stopping that feed. This describes broadcast behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service from a home PC or ISP.

Copyright and live-stream rules still apply to loops
Content does not become permissible merely because it is prerecorded or played on a loop. YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance and copyright guidance for live streams explain that restrictions can apply, including when a live stream matches another copyrighted live broadcast or the channel has an active copyright strike. Use content you created or have permission to broadcast, including music, game footage and other video, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos. That listing alone does not establish its current availability in India, price or exact plan limits. Compare any service against your source type, cost, control needs, monitoring and archive plans.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: confirm verification and check for channel restrictions. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- OBS connects but YouTube reports poor stream health: check the upload connection during the actual broadcast, reduce bitrate or output settings, and leave more headroom for other network traffic.
- Video stutters or OBS shows encoding lag: lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and check whether a supported hardware encoder is available.
- The stream is silent or has unexpected audio: check the audio source and levels in OBS, then test with the same media and audio setup before going public.
- The stream disconnects: check whether the PC lost power or internet, then reconnect from OBS and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status. A local encoder requires a way to notice and recover from interruptions.
- The stream key no longer works or may be exposed: check the key in YouTube Studio and replace it if necessary, then update OBS with the new key.
