To convert an MKV file to MP4 without re-encoding, use FFmpeg’s streamcopy mode—provided the video, audio, and subtitle streams are compatible with MP4 and your target player:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4This changes the container, not the codecs. If a stream cannot be muxed into MP4, convert that stream or leave it out. A file that is successfully created still may not play on a particular device if its codecs are unsupported.
First decide whether to remux or transcode
MKV and MP4 are container formats: each can hold video, audio, subtitles, and other streams. The container change alone does not make the codecs inside more compatible. FFmpeg calls copying selected streams without decoding and encoding them “streamcopy”; it is useful for changing container format, but only when the selected streams work in the destination container. Choose based on the codecs your intended player documents, which tracks you need to retain, and whether re-encoding is acceptable. There is no universal encoder setting that guarantees playback on every device.

Inspect the MKV and convert it with FFmpeg
1. Check the input streams
Before converting, inspect the MKV’s video, audio, subtitle, chapter, and attachment contents. Confirm which languages and tracks you need, and check whether the codecs suit the intended MP4 player. This matters because explicit stream mapping determines what FFmpeg includes.
2. Remux all input streams
Run this in a terminal from the folder containing the file, replacing the filenames as needed:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4-map 0 requests all input streams, while -c copy copies selected streams without re-encoding. Explicit mapping is important: FFmpeg’s automatic selection normally chooses one stream of each acceptable type according to its selection rules, and attachments and data streams are not automatically selected. The official manual explains that mapping options control stream selection and disable default mappings. This all-stream command can fail if a stream cannot be muxed into MP4.
3. Check the output
When FFmpeg finishes, inspect the output’s streams and play it in the device or application that prompted the conversion. Check that the audio languages, subtitle tracks, and other wanted content are present. A successful mux does not establish that a particular player supports the codecs in the file.

Keep all the audio tracks and subtitles you need
Use explicit mapping when you need particular tracks rather than relying on FFmpeg’s automatic selection. -map 0 asks for all input streams, but it is not a guarantee that every stream type can be written to MP4. If you only want specified tracks, map those deliberately; consult FFmpeg’s stream-selection documentation for mapping syntax. After conversion, verify each wanted track in the output.
Subtitles need special attention. In a January 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion, a SubRip subtitle stream caused an MP4 muxing error, and a reply suggested -c:s mov_text for that case. Treat this as a case-specific option, not a universal subtitle-conversion command. Image subtitles and other formats may need different handling or may not transfer as intended.

Attachments and data streams are another edge case: FFmpeg does not automatically select them, and the all-stream mapping command can fail if a selected stream is incompatible with MP4. Decide whether those contents are required before trying to include them.

If streamcopy fails because a stream cannot be muxed into MP4, or if the destination player does not support its codec, encode the incompatible stream while copying compatible ones. The FFmpeg manual gives an example that encodes video with libx264 while copying audio. The appropriate encoder depends on the target player’s documented codec support and the source material; encoding takes longer and is not the same operation as remuxing.

Use the stream-selection and codec options for the specific streams you intend to change, then inspect and test the result. Do not assume that this preserves every track, HDR or Dolby Vision metadata, or playback compatibility: those depend on the actual stream formats, FFmpeg build, output, and device.
Troubleshoot a failed conversion or an MP4 that will not play
- The command errors while writing a stream: A selected stream may not be compatible with MP4. Identify the stream, then omit it if it is not needed or transcode it using an option suited to the target player.
- SubRip subtitles cause a muxing error: A January 2025 FFmpeg-user discussion proposed
-c:s mov_textfor its particular case. Other subtitle formats, especially image subtitles, can require different handling. - The output is missing an audio language or subtitle: Automatic selection may have omitted it. Use explicit
-mapoptions to select the needed streams and check the output. - The MP4 was created but a TV or app rejects it: The player may not support the video or audio codec inside. A January 2025 FFmpeg-user thread describes a TV rejecting an output in a case where codec support was discussed as a likely factor; device behavior varies. Check the device’s documented codec support and transcode the incompatible stream if needed.
- You renamed the file but it still does not work: Changing
.mkvto.mp4changes only the filename extension, not the container or codecs. Use a remux or transcode workflow instead.
