To switch between connected cameras or other HDMI sources, a hardware switcher such as the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro may fit, but you will need a separate device to play video files. The published product descriptions do not confirm that either device lets you freely pick arbitrary stored files while the stream is already live.
First decide what “switch videos” means
There are two different jobs that can sound like switching videos:
- Schedule stored videos: arrange for pre-recorded media to play on a YouTube Live stream. YouTube describes this workflow for the AJA HELO Plus’s PlayToStream feature.
- Switch live inputs: choose between connected sources such as cameras or other HDMI devices. A switcher can change which input is sent to the stream, but it does not necessarily play files stored on its own.
If you need to select one of several stored files manually after the broadcast has begun, check the device’s exact playback controls and workflow before buying. The cited product descriptions establish scheduled playback for the AJA workflow and HDMI input switching for the ATEM Mini Pro; they do not establish on-demand selection among arbitrary stored files during a live stream.
Option 1: Schedule pre-recorded playback with AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder and describes its PlayToStream feature as a way to schedule pre-recorded media for direct streaming to YouTube Live without a computer.

- Confirm the playback workflow before purchase. Verify supported media, how schedules are created, and whether the controls meet your needs. YouTube’s description supports scheduled playback, not a promise of spontaneous file selection once live.
- Prepare your YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, following its current setup instructions.
- Set up the media schedule. Use the device’s PlayToStream workflow to schedule the pre-recorded media you want to broadcast.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to select Go live after the preview appears.
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. This is an account-setup-dependent delay, so check the current instructions for your channel before planning a broadcast.
Option 2: Switch HDMI sources with a hardware switcher
The Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro is described by Blackmagic Design as a four-input HDMI switcher with a hardware streaming engine, recording, and transitions. It can suit a setup where you want to switch among connected video sources and stream from dedicated hardware.

- Connect the sources. Plug each camera or other HDMI source into an input on the switcher.
- Add a playback device for files. If you want to show pre-recorded videos, connect a device that can play them over HDMI. The ATEM Mini Pro product description does not say the switcher itself plays video files.
- Configure streaming. Set the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the hardware workflow, then check the stream preview in Live Control Room.
- Switch inputs during the broadcast. Use the switcher’s controls to change between connected inputs. The video shown is whichever source is active; file selection happens on the connected playback device.
This route separates the jobs: a player supplies the file, the switcher selects an input, and the streaming hardware sends the program to YouTube.
Option 3: Use an iPad-based mobile production setup
Roland AeroCaster combines an iPad app and hardware control surface for switching camera, media, and scenes, and can stream to YouTube over Wi-Fi or cellular. It is a mobile production option rather than a fully self-contained scheduled-playback encoder; it depends on an iPad and potentially other mobile devices.

Set up YouTube safely and test the complete chain
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm the expected video and audio appear in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
- Test the transition you actually need. For scheduled playback, test the schedule. For file switching, test the player’s controls and the HDMI path into the switcher.
- Review rights for every video and audio track. Only stream material you have permission to use. YouTube can apply copyright enforcement to live content, and using pre-recorded media does not remove that risk.
- Plan for unattended operation. Confirm the device’s schedule, power, network, and recovery behavior from its current documentation rather than assuming that all hardware works the same way.
Troubleshooting
The encoder does not appear in YouTube Live Control Room
Check that the YouTube server URL and stream key were entered correctly, then restart the encoder and wait for a preview. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enablement can take up to 24 hours.

The wrong video appears after switching
Check which HDMI input is active and confirm the playback device is sending the intended file to that input. A switcher can only select among the sources connected to it; file playback and file selection are handled by the playback source.
A scheduled file does not play as expected
Review the schedule and the device’s supported media workflow. The YouTube description of PlayToStream confirms scheduled pre-recorded playback, but does not specify every supported format or every in-stream control. Confirm those details with the current device documentation.

The stream is live but viewers cannot hear the video
Check audio at the playback source, the selected switcher input, and the encoder’s program output. Confirm that the source is not muted and that the intended input is active before going live again.
