To host a YouTube Live Q&A, schedule or start a live stream or Premiere, open live chat, choose Add → Start a Q&A, and enter a prompt. Viewers can submit questions in chat; select one from the Questions list and choose Select question to pin it at the top of chat while you answer.
Before you go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It offers three ways to stream: mobile, webcam, and encoder. Mobile streaming has separate eligibility requirements, so check YouTube’s current rules if you plan to use a phone. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Choose your setup
- Mobile: Start and manage a stream from the YouTube mobile app. Confirm mobile eligibility before the event.
- Webcam: Use a computer with a webcam and microphone. YouTube’s webcam flow lets you choose the camera and microphone during setup.
- Encoder: Use an encoder workflow if you want that production setup. YouTube gives Wirecast as an example; its Q&A feature is part of YouTube chat, so paid encoder software is not established as a requirement.
For a computer webcam stream, create or schedule the stream, enter its title and description, choose its privacy setting, then confirm the camera and microphone. YouTube’s webcam setup guide covers that process. If you schedule the event, it may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can select Notify me; see live stream settings.
Start Live Q&A on a computer
- Schedule or start a YouTube live stream or Premiere.
- Open the stream’s live chat and select Add.
- Choose Start a Q&A, enter a prompt that tells viewers what to ask, and start the Q&A.
- Watch the Questions list as questions arrive. Select a question and choose Select question to pin it at the top of chat while you address it.
- Close the question banner when you have finished with that question or are ready to move on.

Run the session so questions are easy to follow
Before opening questions, briefly explain the topic, how viewers should submit questions, and whether you will prioritize a theme or work through questions in order. Use a concise prompt in the Q&A so viewers know what belongs there. As host, select and pin the question you are answering; the pinned question helps chat follow the discussion.
Share chat duties when needed
If you are presenting at the same time, consider assigning a trusted moderator to screen chat and surface useful questions. YouTube offers moderator roles, blocked words, slow mode, and moderation settings. Configure them before the event where possible; some settings can also be adjusted while live. Host a Q&A from the YouTube mobile app
The YouTube mobile app supports starting and managing Live Q&A: start a live stream, open Add in chat, start a Q&A, and enter a prompt. Select and pin questions from the Questions List, then end the session from the chat controls. Follow YouTube’s Android live chat instructions for the mobile controls.
Do not confuse host-run Live Q&A with YouTube’s separate Q&A sticker, which lets viewers ask a question and is currently available only in the mobile app. The sticker is not the Questions list used to select and pin questions during a live Q&A.

End the Q&A and understand what remains
End Live Q&A from the chat controls. YouTube deletes unanswered questions from the Q&A list when the session ends, so do not treat that list as a saved queue. Q&A sessions remain available in chat replay. Chat replay is enabled by default on stream archives, and YouTube says webcam streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. You can turn chat replay off in the video’s customization settings. See the Live Q&A instructions, webcam guide, and moderation guide.
Troubleshooting common Q&A problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If streaming from mobile, check the separate mobile eligibility requirements.
- The Q&A option is missing: First make sure you have scheduled or started a stream or Premiere, then open its live chat and check the Add menu for Start a Q&A.
- Viewers are not sure where to ask: State the topic and submission instructions aloud, then use a clear Q&A prompt.
- Chat is difficult to manage while presenting: Assign a moderator and consider blocked words or slow mode. YouTube says some moderation settings can be changed during the stream as well.
- You need an unanswered question after the event: End the Q&A only after noting or otherwise preserving questions you still need; unanswered items are deleted from the Q&A list when it ends.
Optional: how live-stream monetization fits
YouTube documents ads and Super Chat as live-stream monetization options, but availability depends on channel access. They are not prerequisites for hosting a Q&A; check the options available to your channel in YouTube’s live stream settings.
