For most OBS creators, StreamElements and Streamlabs are the two practical places to start for live-stream widgets. Choose based on the alerts, chat, event lists, labels, and goals you need, how you want to add them to OBS, and how much customization you want. StreamElements documents browser-source overlays and custom-code widgets; Streamlabs offers an OBS plugin and a broad widget set. There is no evidence here that either service’s widgets inherently grow an audience or increase revenue.
What live-stream widgets do
Widgets are on-screen elements that display context or broadcast events during a live stream. Common examples include alerts, chat boxes, event lists, stream labels, and progress goals. They can make a broadcast’s layout more informative, but their presence alone does not establish that viewers will stay longer or that a channel will grow.
Start by listing only the elements you want viewers to see. An alert box and chat overlay serve different purposes from a progress goal or event list; adding every available element can make a layout harder to read.
Which platform should you choose?
| What matters | StreamElements | Streamlabs |
|---|---|---|
| OBS workflow | Overlays are rendered as a browser source in broadcast software, according to its documentation. | Its OBS plugin provides access to overlays, widgets, Stream Labels, and related tools from OBS. |
| Widget examples | Alerts, labels, goals, chat, and other overlay components. | Alert Box, Chat Box, Event Lists, Stream Labels, and other widgets described in its OBS plugin documentation. |
| Customization | Built-in elements can be configured in the Overlay Editor; custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are available for advanced widgets. | Widget setup is documented through the plugin and separate guides, including a Chat Box setup guide. |
| Availability caveat | Check the current documentation for the component you plan to use. | Streamlabs announced that select widgets, including Super Chat Goal, would be sunset on April 12, 2026. Confirm current availability before building around a named widget. |

Choose StreamElements if browser-source overlays and deeper customization fit your workflow
StreamElements describes a single overlay rendered as a browser source and supports built-in components as well as custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. That makes it a sensible starting point if you want to arrange several elements in an overlay or build beyond standard widgets.
Choose Streamlabs if its OBS plugin and widget workflow suit your setup
Streamlabs documents a plugin that brings widgets and related tools into OBS. Its Chat Box guide provides a focused setup route for that widget. Because specific features can change, verify that the widget you want is currently supported before relying on it.

How to add widgets to an OBS stream
StreamElements: build an overlay and add it as a browser source
- Create the overlay. Open the StreamElements Overlay Editor and create an overlay for your broadcast layout.
- Add the elements you need. Insert an AlertBox or another built-in widget, then arrange and configure it in the editor. For functionality beyond built-in components, StreamElements documents a custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript widget path.
- Use the overlay in OBS. Add the overlay as a browser source in your broadcast software and size and position it within the scene. Follow StreamElements’ current instructions for the overlay URL and any editor-specific settings.
- Preview the scene. Check that each element is legible and placed where it will not cover important game content. Test the relevant event or widget in the service’s current preview workflow before relying on it live.
StreamElements’ Overlays documentation describes browser-source rendering and overlay components.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Streamlabs: use its OBS plugin or follow the Chat Box guide
- Consult the current plugin guide. Streamlabs’ OBS plugin guide describes access to overlays, widgets, Stream Labels, and related tools from OBS.
- Choose a widget and configure it. For a chat overlay, use the current Chat Box setup guide rather than relying on menu names that may have changed.
- Check it in your scene. Confirm the widget appears where intended and is readable alongside the game or other content.
- Verify the widget is still available. Streamlabs’ notice dated for an April 12, 2026 sunset listed Super Chat Goal among select affected widgets. Check the current status of any specific feature before designing around it.
Keep widgets readable and relevant
- Use the smallest set of elements that communicates what you want: for example, alerts and chat, or a goal and event list.
- Check that overlays do not obscure game information, subtitles, or other parts of the scene viewers need to see.
- Preview alerts, labels, and chat at the size they will appear in the stream, not just in the editor.
- Review the platform’s current documentation if a widget fails to load or a named feature is no longer listed.
What a Stream Deck does—and does not do
An Elgato Stream Deck is an optional hardware control surface for operating OBS, not a widget provider. Elgato documents actions for scenes, source visibility, audio, stream start and stop, recording, replay buffer, transitions, and other OBS functions. The OBS Studio plugin for Stream Deck is described by Elgato as free on the Elgato Marketplace; that statement applies to the plugin, not the Stream Deck hardware. Check the integration requirements against your operating system and setup. A control surface can make OBS actions easier to trigger, but it is not required to use overlays.
Or let it run in the cloud
Widgets are overlays for a live broadcast; StreamNeo is a separate service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
