To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Amazon EC2, run FFmpeg on the instance with -re -stream_loop -1 before the input file, then send the encoded output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for your YouTube event. The file can loop indefinitely inside FFmpeg; that does not guarantee an unlimited or uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days; initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- An Amazon EC2 instance with FFmpeg installed, the authorized video file available to the process, enough CPU capacity to encode it in real time, and sufficient outbound network capacity.
- A scheduled or created encoder-based YouTube live stream, including its exact server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
This workflow sends a file through an encoder; it does not require a camera or microphone. AWS’s published prerecorded-video example targets Amazon IVS, not YouTube. Use its loop concept only, and use the URL and key supplied by YouTube for your event.
Set up the YouTube event and retrieve its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Enable live streaming if prompted, then create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s guide covers encoder setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- In the stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Choose the RTMPS URL when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS/SSL; do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is encrypted. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Prepare the EC2 host and video
Install an FFmpeg build appropriate for the instance’s operating system and make the input file readable at a stable path, such as /path/to/video.mp4. Installation commands vary by distribution and package source, so check the current documentation for the OS and FFmpeg build you choose. The available guidance does not establish a particular EC2 instance size, operating-system command, or cost.
Before choosing encoding settings, check the file’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and duration. A stream that re-encodes video needs enough sustained CPU headroom to keep pace with playback. Also account for the file’s storage and the instance’s outbound transfer capacity for the planned run time.

Build and run the FFmpeg command
Use this command as a structural template, not a verified EC2 command or a universal encoding preset. Replace the placeholders with values suited to the source and YouTube’s guidance:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-remakes FFmpeg read the prerecorded input at its native frame rate rather than as fast as the file can be decoded.-stream_loop -1loops the input without a set limit. It is an input option, so put it before the matching-i. FFmpeg documents-1as infinite looping in its official documentation.- The encoding options after
-iare examples. Set bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings to suit the file, destination, and available capacity; do not copy placeholder values literally. - Replace the output URL with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Never substitute the Amazon IVS endpoint in AWS’s example.
FFmpeg’s loop setting makes the local input repeat, but the process still depends on the EC2 instance, network, and YouTube ingest staying available. The command alone does not supervise or restart FFmpeg after an instance or process failure.

Choose settings that YouTube can ingest reliably
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video support; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Treat these as platform guidance, not a guarantee that every codec/container combination in a particular FFmpeg build will work. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Setting | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 is a common choice for the illustrative command; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. | Use a codec supported by your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s ingest guidance. |
| Frame rate and resolution | Match the source where practical; YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. | Higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more encoding capacity and bitrate. |
| Bitrate mode | Use constant bitrate as YouTube recommends. | Choose video and audio rates appropriate to the source and the selected resolution/frame rate. |
| Keyframes | Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. | With a 30 fps output, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames; at 60 fps, 120 frames. Set -g accordingly if using a fixed frame rate. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube; the example uses AAC. | Check that the file has an audio stream and that its levels and synchronization are acceptable. |
| Ingest protocol | Prefer RTMPS. | Use the exact encrypted server URL provided in Live Control Room. |
YouTube recommends network capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Confirm outbound capacity from the selected EC2 host, and watch YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming the nominal instance network rate is available continuously. Lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering, so choose latency based on whether interaction matters for this prerecorded broadcast.

Preview, go live, and monitor the loop
- Start FFmpeg and check its output for connection or encoding errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect both picture and sound. Confirm the stream health indicators before starting the public event.
- Start the event in Live Control Room when the preview is correct. YouTube advises testing in advance and monitoring stream audio and video while live; see Streaming tips.
- Keep a person or operational process responsible for checking the instance, FFmpeg process, and YouTube status during the broadcast. Stop the encoder when the event is over.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that archive note as a promise that a continuous loop can run indefinitely: the FFmpeg input may loop indefinitely, but the cited YouTube guidance does not establish an unlimited broadcast duration, and EC2 operation is not guaranteed uninterrupted.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use on YouTube Live, including any music, game footage, and other embedded material. A file that is lawful to possess is not automatically cleared for public rebroadcast. Review YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility and policies before scheduling, especially if using third-party content or repeating material. A live encoder setup does not override copyright rules or channel restrictions.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Incorrect server URL or key, a connection failure, or a stream not yet received. | Copy the URL and key again from the event’s setup, use its RTMPS URL, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. |
| Stream starts but drops or buffers | Insufficient outbound headroom, overloaded encoding, or unstable host/network capacity. | Check YouTube stream health, reduce output bitrate or encoding load if appropriate, and maintain the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| Video is rejected or playback is poor | Unsupported or unsuitable codec settings, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval. | Compare the output settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance; use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval as the recommendation baseline. |
| Video does not repeat | The loop option is missing or placed after the input it should affect. | Put -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i and confirm the input path is correct. |
| Audio is silent or out of sync | The source lacks an audio stream, output audio settings are unsuitable, or encoding is falling behind. | Inspect the source streams and the YouTube preview; adjust the audio mapping/encoding and verify CPU headroom. |
| Stream ends unexpectedly | FFmpeg exited, the instance stopped, or ingest was interrupted. | Inspect the process and instance state and restart deliberately if needed. The example command does not provide persistent process supervision or automatic recovery. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
EC2 cost depends on the instance, region, runtime, storage, and outbound data transfer, so there is no reliable single price for this workflow without those choices. A continuously running encoder also requires ongoing attention to process and instance health. Check current AWS pricing for the exact configuration before leaving a stream running for long periods; no particular instance recommendation or cost is established here.
