The chatbot is a separate setup: approve it as a moderator in YouTube Studio if you want it in your live chat.
Before you start: choose how to connect StreamElements
SE.Live brings StreamElements tools into OBS. Alternatively, you can use a standard OBS installation, configure YouTube as its streaming service, and add StreamElements overlays as browser sources. These are separate from creating the overlay itself; connecting an account does not automatically place graphics in a scene or enable the chatbot.
- Choose SE.Live if you want StreamElements chat and activity docks integrated into OBS. The current StreamElements setup documentation lists Windows support and macOS beta availability.
- Choose standard OBS if you prefer not to install SE.Live or want to configure YouTube with a stream key yourself. You can still use StreamElements overlays through OBS browser sources.
The official walkthrough specifies OBS Studio 31.x or newer for its Windows setup. Check StreamElements’ current SE.Live installation instructions for the latest compatibility details, especially if you use macOS or your OBS version differs.
Install SE.Live and connect YouTube
- Close OBS. Install SE.Live with OBS closed, then reopen OBS.
- Sign in to StreamElements. Use the StreamElements menu in OBS to sign in.
- Connect YouTube or configure the stream service. Follow the connection flow in StreamElements’ YouTube setup tutorial. If using the manual route, select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the OBS streaming service and enter the stream key shown in YouTube’s Encoder setup.
StreamElements warns: “never share your stream key!” Treat it like a password. Do not post it in a scene, send it to viewers, or include it in a public screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live-control settings before streaming again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare your OBS scene inputs
SE.Live is not itself a camera or microphone source. Add the sources you need to the OBS scene: the StreamElements YouTube tutorial demonstrates an Audio Input Capture source and a Video Capture Device source. Select the intended microphone and camera in those source settings, and verify the meters and preview before going live. You can omit these sources if your stream does not use live camera or microphone input.
Create or choose a StreamElements overlay
- Open the StreamElements Themes Gallery and choose a YouTube theme, or select an overlay you have already created.
- Customize the overlay elements you want, such as alerts, labels, goals, or chat. StreamElements describes overlays as visual elements rendered in broadcast software via a single browser source; see its overlay documentation.
- In the YouTube tutorial’s example, edit AlertBox settings and hide countdown, starting-soon, or frame layers you do not want displayed. A static theme is suggested there for optimal CPU performance.
- Copy the overlay URL from StreamElements. Keep the URL private if it exposes a personal or unlisted overlay.
Add the overlay to an OBS scene
- In OBS, select the scene that should show the graphics.
- In the Sources panel, choose + → Browser. Create a new source and give it a recognizable name, such as “StreamElements overlay.”
- Paste the copied StreamElements overlay URL into the browser-source URL field.
- Set the width and height to match your scene canvas. StreamElements’ tutorial uses 1920 by 1080 as its example; that is not a universal resolution requirement.
- Confirm the source, then position it in the Sources order so it appears above the game or capture source but below any elements that should cover it. Check the OBS preview for cropping, scaling, or unwanted layers.
If you edit the overlay later, the browser source normally displays the overlay associated with that URL; check the preview after changes rather than adding a duplicate source for each edit.

Enable the StreamElements chatbot (optional)
The chatbot is not enabled just by connecting SE.Live or adding an overlay. To let the bot post in YouTube chat, approve the StreamElements chatbot as a moderator in YouTube Studio. StreamElements’ YouTube chatbot guide gives the setup steps.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community.
- Add or approve the StreamElements chatbot URL as a moderator.
- Start a public live broadcast so the bot can join. The StreamElements guide says the stream must be both public and live for the bot to enter.
- Check the chat using Live chat, not only Top chat; Top chat may hide bot messages.
Some StreamElements loyalty features are not currently available on YouTube accounts, including giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests. Do not assume that every option shown in a Twitch-oriented onboarding flow works on YouTube.

Test the complete setup before going live
- Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube channel and that the correct stream key is configured.
- Check the scene preview for the overlay, its positioning, and any hidden or unwanted theme layers.
- Verify microphone and camera sources if the broadcast uses them.
- If using the chatbot, make the broadcast public and live, then look for the bot in Live chat.
- Keep your stream key and overlay URL out of public posts and screenshots.
Common setup problems and fixes
SE.Live does not appear in OBS
Check that OBS was closed during installation, then reopen it. Verify your operating system and OBS version against the current SE.Live requirements; the documented Windows minimum is OBS Studio 31.x, while macOS is listed as beta.
The YouTube stream will not connect
Check that OBS is set to YouTube/YouTube Gaming and that the configured stream key is the one shown in YouTube’s Encoder setup. Do not post the key while asking for help; rotate it if it has become public.

The overlay is missing or incorrectly sized
Confirm the browser source contains the right overlay URL and that its dimensions match the OBS canvas. The 1920 × 1080 size in the tutorial is an example, not a mandatory setting. Inspect the scene’s source order and visibility toggles if the overlay is behind another source or hidden.
The chatbot does not join or its messages are missing
Verify that the StreamElements chatbot was approved as a moderator in YouTube Studio’s Community settings, and that the broadcast is public and live. Switch from Top chat to Live chat when checking messages.

A StreamElements loyalty option is unavailable
This may be a YouTube platform limitation rather than a connection error. StreamElements lists giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests among features not currently available on YouTube accounts.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamElements and StreamNeo solve different problems: StreamElements adds overlays and related tools to an OBS broadcast; StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. To use StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not add StreamElements overlays or stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream continues from the cloud with your computer off.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
