Short answer: Vultr has the clearer documented route for running OBS remotely: its Broadcaster Marketplace app is designed for browser-managed livestreaming and its guide calls for a GPU instance. DigitalOcean explicitly lists video streaming as a Droplet use case, but the available product information does not identify a Droplet size proven for a specific always-on stream. Neither provider is established as universally more reliable, faster, or cheaper. Choose by the encoding workload, region, included outbound transfer, and total cost you can verify for your setup.

If you want to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without maintaining a VPS, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Details are below.

How Vultr and DigitalOcean differ for an always-on stream

Decision point Vultr DigitalOcean
Documented streaming workflow Vultr documents its Broadcaster Marketplace app, an OBS-based remote workflow that includes YouTube as a destination. The guide calls for a GPU instance; this is a deployment path, not a performance or uptime guarantee. Vultr Broadcaster guide DigitalOcean lists video streaming among potential Droplet use cases, but its VPS page does not prescribe an OBS setup or validate a specific instance for an always-on encoding workload. DigitalOcean VPS hosting
Compute choice The Broadcaster guide’s GPU requirement makes instance availability, GPU cost, and regional inventory important to check before committing. Droplets include shared and dedicated CPU classes. The available product information does not establish which configuration can encode a particular resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
Outbound data billing Vultr documents overage at $0.01 per GB beyond the applicable plan allocation. Its bandwidth rules describe account-level free bandwidth and hourly accrual of instance allocations; verify the current plan and account treatment. Vultr overage rate · Vultr bandwidth caps DigitalOcean bills outbound transfer above the included allowance at $0.01 per GiB. Droplet transfer is pooled at team level and accrues based on how long a Droplet exists; unused allowance does not roll over. Inbound transfer is free. DigitalOcean bandwidth billing
Reliability evidence No like-for-like 24/7 YouTube test establishes stream uptime, dropped frames, ingest quality, or latency. No like-for-like 24/7 YouTube test establishes stream uptime, dropped frames, ingest quality, or latency.

Vultr’s guide is the more specific starting point if you want a documented OBS-on-a-VPS workflow. DigitalOcean remains a possible general-purpose VPS option, but you will need to validate the configuration yourself. The YouTube channel is the publishing destination; the VPS hosts the encoding or relay process that sends the feed to YouTube.

Estimate bandwidth before choosing a plan

A continuous stream sends data out for every hour it runs. Estimate its monthly transfer from the outgoing bitrate before comparing a VM’s headline price. For decimal units, a useful planning formula is:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed

For example, at 6 Mbps for 24 hours a day over a 30-day month, the estimate is 6 × 0.45 × 720, or about 1,944 GB. This is a planning estimate, not a provider invoice forecast: protocol overhead, stream interruptions and restarts, billing units, and the exact month affect actual usage. Add headroom and check measured transfer after launch.

Compare that estimate with the provider’s applicable allowance and pooling rules, not just the server’s compute charge. DigitalOcean’s published billing rate applies per GiB above allowance, while Vultr’s applies per GB above allocation; those units and billing models are not interchangeable. DigitalOcean’s page gives an example Premium Droplet from $7/month with 1 GiB memory, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe, and 1,000 GB transfer. That example is not evidence that the Droplet can encode a particular stream. Check DigitalOcean’s VPS page and bandwidth billing terms for current details.

Vultr’s bandwidth-cap documentation describes 2 TB of free bandwidth per account per month, resetting monthly without rollover, alongside hourly accrual of instance allocations. Confirm the applicable account and product rules rather than assuming that figure is the complete allowance for any deployment. Review Vultr’s bandwidth-cap explanation. Regional prices and inventory can vary, so confirm the chosen location directly. Vultr on regional pricing.

How to decide for your stream

  1. Fix the output settings first. Write down the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and whether the VPS must encode video or only relay an already encoded feed. Those details determine the CPU or GPU workload; a provider’s generic streaming use case is not a sizing recommendation.
  2. Choose the region and verify the needed instance. Check current availability and pricing in the region you intend to use. For Vultr’s Broadcaster app, confirm that a suitable GPU instance is available there. For DigitalOcean, do not assume a Droplet size will work without testing it against your exact encoding settings.
  3. Calculate transfer and full monthly cost. Estimate monthly outbound data from bitrate and runtime. Add the instance, any GPU or dedicated resources, overage, storage, backups, and operational overhead. Use current plan pages and billing terms because pricing and allowances can change.
  4. Run a representative trial stream. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, YouTube ingest destination, and target region. Watch CPU or GPU load, encoder lag, dropped frames, network transfer, and the YouTube live dashboard. A short test can reveal capacity problems, but it cannot establish long-term reliability.
  5. Plan for failures and maintenance. Decide how the process restarts after an OBS, VPS, network, or YouTube ingest interruption; set up monitoring and alerts; and verify recovery behavior rather than assuming a marketplace image provides continuous operation.

Which one should you choose?

  • Start with Vultr if you want the provider with a specifically documented OBS Broadcaster workflow and can confirm a suitable GPU instance, region, and total cost.
  • Consider DigitalOcean if its Droplet options and team-level transfer pooling fit your broader hosting needs, and you are prepared to size and validate the stream workload yourself.
  • Choose neither on a reliability claim alone. The available information does not compare end-to-end YouTube stream uptime, dropped frames, or latency under matched conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your stream is made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo avoids managing OBS and a VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card.

The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams made from uploaded video, not camera-based live broadcasts. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
